You don't 'need' both unless you're likely to do a gig where it's essential that you read.
OK, I'll rephrase it, if you're in any way shape or form, half serious about playing for a living, then you need both No theatre MD, or professional band will wait while you pick the part out by ear.
-
You need both, simple as that. You have to be able to play by ear if the guys you're playing with don't know what they're doing or playing. Waste of time asking them for a chart if they don't even know what chords they're playing. You need to be able to read and understand basic theory at least if you want to play any sort of professional dep gig, theatre pit gig, cruise gig etc.
If she didn't have the right papers, then surely that is the job that immigration officers are supposed to do, isn't it?
I doubt she'd have even been allowed to get on the plane without the correct papers. -
Allowing someone to use your bass at a gig.
It's no secret, I don't let others use any of my gear. Not at this stage in life. For those that do, I think level of maturity, personality, type of act/band and the caliber of the bass your letting someone else use comes into the equation. Things like high end, low end bass, these terms are all relative. What I think is high end you might think of as mid-range or low end. Blue
Low end or high end is immaterial to my mind, you've still bought it, and it's cost is relative to what you can afford. If some idiot breaks it then it's broken. -
I have a GT10-B and from not being into effects at all..that is quite a jump. I've tried a ME50 quite a bit and that had one or two useable sounds but was a bit agricultural so I ended up using it like a stomp box... My current board is waaay too much for what I need and I can't be bothered to carry it for just one or two sounds.. The best case I can make for it is to claim my space on stage
The GT10B is amazing, I had one, it was just too heavy for me. -
This is going back some years but the band I was in at the time got a support with The Beyond, who were getting a lot of attention with their debut album. Anyway, to cut a long story short, the inevitable happened and my bass died, active circuit went bust as I remember and I didn't have a spare that night. The Beyond's bass player wasn't interested in lending me a bass, can't say as I blame him he had some v nice Modulus guitars if I remember correctly and Ampeg mega rig. So, we ended our set after two and half songs and to top it all a journo from Metal Hammer was there that night, said he was impressed with what he had heard but needed more than three songs to write a review. The rest of the band were well pissed off with me, can't say as I blame them either and I felt like a complete dick for not bringing backup. I learnt a lesson that night and have never gigged without a spare bass since. If a gig is important enough, you bring a spare. NO EXCUSES!
It's only in the last 3 weeks that I had 2 basses. In 20 years of gigging I've never had a problem, the worst that can happen is the battery go, but I change those regularly, and I can switch out the preamp.
He does what!? I wanna hear the story behind that one?
One of my tutors play like that, as does Lee Pomeroy. It would totally depend who it was. I've let guys at uni use my bass, but I know and trust them. I only play 6 string basses anyway -
Do you think the ray brown and Jazz book would be suitable for elec bass as well? If so how much for both. Or where are you based, I'm North London.
I think so, both are more for jazz theory, scales and exercises, neither have anything especially dedicated to upright bass. The jazz bass book is great, it looks at specific players and has examples of their playing. I'm in Kilburn. £20 for both ?

This is mint condition, complete with the original box etc, and works perfectly. It's a fantastic item, the preamps are really great. They got some great reviews in Sound on sound magazine. Very much a 'plug-in-and-play' item. I've used it with a MacBook pro and Logic 9, Logic X, Ableton live 9 and MainStage 3 with perfect results every time. Selling because I'm using my MacBook for live stuff, consequently I've bought something else. £80 including postage.
Wickid! I like the harmonium actually.
I like the harmonium too. I was sat in his flat the other day while he sang and played, it was very ethereal.
Excellent! That'll work for me!
A very short, and very rough demo here https://soundcloud.com/ambient-bassist/om-1 Imagine it without the harmonium. This was cut down from a demo that he sent me, it was recorded on his phone.
It's really nice mate. Some ethereal vocals would go very nicely with it too. Lovely sounds and ambience.
Thanks I'm doing a collaboration with a guy that does a lot of Buddhist and Tibetan chants.

Anyone any experience of using this, and setting it up ? It's perfect for my needs, i.e. small and weighs next to nothing My problem is I want it to control MainStage, which it does, but I also want it to control Mobius looper. I'm having a problem with the terminology in all the manuals that I'm reading, I don't understand what they're on about !
Really nice track oozes emotional content, love it, amazing that you have created this with just a bass and an effects pedal, very impressed
Thanks

Maybe it's as well they don't sell through shops, they're not exactly cheap as it is ! I have seen two of these cabs, and didn't think much of the build quality. The one wasn't even square !
-
Aren't these cabs actually quite expensive ? I think if you buy something that's quite expensive, then you'd expect it to be well designed, sounds to me that it's maybe not. As for supplying new handles when old ones get worn out, the cabs can't really be that old, they're quite new on the market aren't they ? So why would they wear out so fast, or aren't/weren't they particularly good quality ?

I've gone from singes, to a multi and I'm now using the plugins from Logic Pro/Mainstage. Problem with singles is you generally have 'one' sound set up on them, if you want/need another for a different song/piece or section, then you have to mess about with knobs. The beauty of a multi effects is you can set up different sounds and just call them up. It also saves all the spaghetti of cables and makes routing easier. A lot of my stuff on band camp was with a Boss Gt10, others are Logic plugins. Try a Boss GT3, it's good enough for this guy - just happens to be my 2nd favourite bassist http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aY4Ra2KOyas -

Haven't you put hours and hours into learning to read etc ? Seems a bit of a waste 😒 -
Doesn't look like a comfort... although I have been known to be wrong Do you guys wear yours that way round? with the adjustable bit up by the top horn? I've always had mine the other way round with the adjustable bit near the bottom strap pin... guess it doesn't make much difference really.
It's not a comfort strap, much too much padding in it. I always have the adjustable bit on the bottom of the bass too.

Just looks really comfortable

It's the same as the major, if you carry on forming chords across 2 octaves. The natural minor or relative minor is the 6th degree of the major scale, so start there and carry on building chords from there. ie - minor, m7b5, major, minor, minor, major, dominant 7, minor.

Another new one here https://ambient-bass...ime-spent-alone This is just 6 tracks of bass. Probably slightly long too, at just over 10 minutes, so well done anyone who manages to sit through it all I'm not thinking bass at all really with any of this stuff, I'm hearing cello, violin and woodwind. Probably really not the best of forums to put any of this on, it's probably the antithesis of what bass is about. It doesn't even sound like bass, maybe I need to learn to play properly and stop disguising it
