1. Moog Bass Murf does a very similar effect to what you're after. But it's not the cheapest or smallest pedal (you could get a seperate Fanger & Distortion pedal to fit in the same space & have some change for another pedal). But what it does, it excells at.
2. My recommendation is a 2nd hand Markbass 2x10 combo (or save a little more & get new). But they're very reliable. Reason being, I was in the same position (pub rock band) & tried countless rigs. Ended up settling on a combo (for quickness) & 2x10 because a 1x15 doesn't have as good a dispersion & I wasn't sure the 1x12 would do the job. Another good option would be a Barefaced cab with any of the decent small heads (there's loads that'll fit in budget). There's a lot of good gear in her budget though, so get her to try loads of different rigs. As for a 4x10, I wouldn't recommend one over a 2x10.
3.
Unlucky!!
I know. They're better than they used to be & was surprised that they chewed that wire.
4. Headphones aren't working (cat chewed the wire) & my Mrs is writing a tutorial for a magazine, so I have to wait until she's finished (been at it since Wednesday!
5. Top bloke & great interview. Still no sound to listen to your live stuff yet
6.
You'd be better off stacking them all together rather than at opposite sides of a stage. http://billfitzmauri....php?f=10&t=398
That would be one mighty tall tower! You'd need a Simon Snorkel to get to the amp. If you're doing things in stereo, I think you would get a better stereo reproduction if the cabs was at opposite sides
7. Buying s/h pedals off here has the advantage of "If you don't like it, sell it again" & there's usually no loss.
8.
Turn down the bass and treble and crank the volume.
My thoughts exactly!
9. Are you looking for a combo or an amp to go with your 1x15? Scrap that, you said "rack mountable", so that rules out the combo. I'll get 1st shout & say try some Mark Bass amps. Well within your budget, or are you looking to buy a cab as well & keep in budget? If you want a cab too, then Barefaced gets a lot of love (even from those who don't own any).
10. They could have just kept it simple and used the instrument name instead... You Cou(ld) Lay Leigh
11. My mandolinist told me that a few years ago, but I think you'd have to hear someone say it to understand it. I think it's G C E A. The G being the one above the C & E in the scale & the A above that. Like this actually... And sung "My Dog Has Fleeeeeeeeez"
12. I'd like a stereo rig with 2 Big Twins stacked either side of the stage.
13. I never liked much in the way of classical but I always liked 1812 & Holst's The Planets. Bach's Cello Suites are pretty good & you can learn them on bass too, so good for some solo stuff & good for getting the fingers moving. They ain't easy though (but fun never the less).
14. Oh & Epifani do a nice amp too!
15. And the amp would probably put out @ 350 watts to one 8Ω cab if you turned it right up (& maybe fry the voice coil).
16. 1. You could try taking the baseplate off & turning it over (so the rubber is inside the case). But if you get some decent heavy duty Velcro & wipe the rubber with some meths, it should stick ok. 2. As long as your 9v PSU supplies enough amps & your polarities are ok, then fine. 3. There isn't a "best way" as such, it's down to what YOU like. Experimentation is the key (& 1/2 the fun). Other advice? Learn to spell Board & listen to classical music. Recommended pedals? If you don't know what you're gonna use, then plug into your computer or get a multi fx. No point buying a type of pedal someone else suggests as you might have no use for it. I'd say get a Moog Bass Murf, but you might find it as useful as a brick. I on the other hand, love what it does.
17. I'd use some of your money on a day trip to a decent bass shop & try some amps out. Otherwise you're gonna get recommended what we use. +1 for Markbass, had the2x10 combo for some time more & no issues to report.
18.
This really is Spinal Tap stuff, isn't it?
I really want to see their "band" now. I'm picturing 4 girls dressed up as (in order of the pics) Dave Gahan (80s version), one of the Village People, Michael Jackson & Simon Le Bon!
19. I would say this...
A small bust and an average to skinny figure (Has a look that could fit into the band drawing image)
Needs to be reworded to
A couple of fried eggs and an anorexic to bulimic figure (Has a look that could fit into the band drawing image)
to fit the "band drawing image"...
20. I'd get it if I was in the same position. Then if things are taking off, I'd skip past the £2-300 gear if you can afford it & get a decent rig that's gonna suit your needs for the future.
21. Yes! I use the same bass, pedalboard & 2x10 combo at home, rehearsals & at gigs. I don't see the sense in rehearsing with a band & spending that time defining your sound, only to go & gig with something else.
22.
Great minds think alike, I started typing ages ago then the phone went
I'm not an Ashdown fan either!
23. Your style of music can help to choose to a degree, but it's down to personal choice. There's a lot of combos in your price bracket in the " four sale" section on here. I would try a few out in a shop if I was you, but the good thing about buying 2nd hand is that if you don't like it, you can sell it at no loss. Going by your taste, it might be worth trying an Ashdown combo. They're described as " wooley".
24.
At the risk of causing offence I gigged on Sat with my Hartke Kickback 10 just to see if I could (stack at the ready just in case) and used the DI into the PA (Yamaha Club with s112's and S118 bass bins) rather than my usual Ashdown 600 with two 15's . Firstly I could hear myself better than ever because the speakers were pointing at me and not the audience, more than enough detail to let me vary my fingering and tone more than usual. I could also hear the rest of the band better, Talking to the audience in the break about the sound the reaction was; "you're a bit louder than the other bands and the bass is immense." I think the stack might be relegated to open air gigs from now on.
+1 If you're using PA & you only need a monitor, then what you have is solely for your own enjoyment/ego. For general pub & club gigs with no PA for the bass, then most 2x10 rigs would be more than ample.
25. Have you tried a Sansamp or similar? Apparently they'll meet your old skool sounds with your new skool rig (I've not used one as I don't want an old skool sound).
