Help, can't find a jazz band! (Scene is really dry, any ideas?)
xgsjx replied to SevenSeas's topic in General Discussion
It can be a challenge just finding local musicians that play something that isn't metal or indie. Best places to try are Joinmyband.co.uk, Bandmix.co.uk & Gumtree. I was searching for ages for Acid Jazz/Breakbeat musicians. I've ended up with a metal guitarist & another guitarist who's taken up drums (& is now the drummer), a house DJ to play decks & sing & another guitarist to share the vocal duties & play some keys. Man, it's hard work. But I'm sending them facebook messages with youtube videos for stuff like Incognito, Miloopa, Jamiroquai, Groove Armada & so on to get them listening to what they've offered to play (what we end up with may well be completely different, but it'll be fun). So you might have to find a couple of musicians who aren't Jazzcats & teach them what they're missing. Maybe check with some of your existing band members & see if any are interested in the Jazz side. Drummers usually are (let them hear some JoJo Mayer & see how things go). Good luck with it. -
Neither. It's not really worth telling the truth in good ol blighty is it. It reminds me of school when anyone good at something would be rounded on and called a show off or a swot or summat.
I was only messin. Ya Summat!
I'm not entirely sure. It's fugly indeed, but within its realm does seem to have some style. The one below lacks even that, and the child-like decoration makes it even worse, imho. best, bert
The body does have a classical instrument shape to it. But then it looks like it went wrong somewhere.
I can switch effortlessly between bass and guitar, and I barely ever practice.
I'm trying to work out if you're a showoff or if that's the guitarist in you speaking?
Good, 'cos mine's not a Fender.

And are they the same members who think, for example, Fenders are damn ugly. Lots of members own those too. You can't have a thread like this without offending people. Indeed, the question asks us to say by which basses we are offended, FFS.
I remember making a thread called "who's the worst bassist" & put a list of some of my fave bassists & a couple of not so good bassists (like Sid Vicious) & most of the posts was about how offended they was. incidentally, I think Fenders have the potential to be very nice if it wasn't for that hideous cyst of a top horn!
-
I was gonna suggest there shouldn't be any Fenders in here. As nice as [s]some[/s] any of the basses above are, none of them would get on my top 10. I haven't got a suggestion as there's a few I really like with equal measures.

Alternate between the 2. It'll improve your bass playing & the bass playing will improve your fingerpicking skills. It doesn't have to be one day on one, one on t'other. I play one for a few months without touching the other & now... I'm just about to pick up the acoustic guitar & annoy the Mrs.

How many watts an amp is gives very little indication of how loud it'll run a speaker. TC kinda prove this with the RH amps as they all put out the same wattage. Try both amps out & see what you like the best.
I have always loved that percussive style of his. And his chordal playing is fantastic too. I love this video; it used to be on youtube in small snippers but I don't think I've ever seen it all in one go with the intro piece intact. Absolutely marvellous playing.
That was brilliant. I used to play that song on guitar in church, but it was nothing like how that ends up going!

We don't want to see a pic of your knob, thank you very much.

I wasn't impressed with how loud the briefcase could go when I tried one. Sounded lovely at low to medium volumes, but when I turned it up, it farted at me. -
I'd never even thought about voting for myself. What a [s]good[/s] silly idea! I've not had a chance yet to listen to all the entries back to back, so I'll have a listen over the next couple of days & then vote.

People who randomly ask about your Basses!! (annoyed)

How much would you be asking for the Travis Bean TB2000 Fretless? I have £158 waiting. -
First heard him playing with Ron Kenoli & thought wow.

I upgraded with downgrades. I've ripped out the active electrics & made it passive, changed the high mass fully adjustable bridge for a ceased fender type one that can't be fully adjusted & stripped all the paint off of it. On the +, the electrics got damaged & needed fixed, the high mass bridge had broke (I'm getting a new bridge next week all going well) & the paint was badly chipped (& didn't have a good roadworn image) so now has a nice oiled & waxed wood finish. I also added a knob to control one of my fx pedals & put flatwound strings on it.

Help needed connecting hartke lh500 to 2x hydrive 112
xgsjx replied to dannyt144's topic in Amps and Cabs
^ like he says, boom! If you've not got the volume, check where your input gain & output volume are both set to. If this isn't the issue, then try using your other amp & see if there's still an issue (& try your 4x10 with the 500). -
If you don't want to play in an indie band, put something similar to what I put on my ad when I was looking for musicians to start my acid jazz/breakbeat/funk/house band... "Not looking to play Indie, Screamo, Metal or Punk. I've played these genres before & now looking to do something different" Every band here is one of those 4 genres, so if you don't want to play any specific genres, let the reader know. I did get a couple of folk still contacting me to say "I know it's not the style you're looking to do, but we're looking for a bassist to play...", but they was understanding of a No.

The CMD102 (the 2x10 combo) isn't the smallest of things, it's about the same size as a standard 2x10 cab with front ports. But it doesn't weigh much (can be carried with one hand), has a tilt back option if you use it horizontally & has plenty of loudness (& sounds quality too). So it might be bigger than one of your current 2x10 cabs. I think something like the 121 that Lozz has may suit you better though. -
I had doubts too. Bought it & haven't had any since. Here's my review from 2009... http://basschat.co.uk/topic/36164-moogerfooger-mf-105b-mf-101/ & like's been said, get at least 1 exp pedal (& maybe even a short TRS lead to make it control things with the envelope follower).

Get a keyboard/synth.
Main reason is the guitarist has been playing guitar for 30 year and still cant play it
Maybe then he's really a keys player?

I've been to a couple of weddings taht used the same band. A 4 piece (Drums, Bass, guitar & vocals) & everything apart from the vocals was a backing track (probably Karaoke tracks). They put on a good show for those who don't know anything about playing music, but to watch the rest of the band mime from a musician's POV was a bit of a "Oh dear, why not get a DJ" moment (though they did play like they was playing the song).
-
Why not get one of the guitarists to play the keys part on the iPad, maybe even using one of these...

That is a very tasty looking rig! I've been gassing for the 102HF to go with my combo for a few years now (even though I dont need it).
