1. Somebody whose opinion I trust said to me... "if you find yourself wishing you could get a bit lower then you should consider a 5" (or something I like that). That's why I keep ending up back there... low D... and it's easier than drop-D. It does give you other playing options as well. If, like me, your scale knowledge isn't rock solid it can make transposing to a different key a whole lot easier in an emergency. But, honestly, I probably don't play the B string all that much.
2. I just acquired this... now back in TRB ownership after a number of years. So far, I'm well pleased with it. The early models are the best ones after all! More pictures when I find my camera...
3. Well good luck then... as long as you are all on the same page you'll be fine. If you are not, it's all experience
4. You can't win. If you play the usual cheesy cover band tracks (Summer of 69 et al) then you are accused of being unoriginal. If you play slightly outfield stuff then you get blank looks apart the weird couple standing at the back. There's nothing wrong, I think, with an eclectic mix as long as you aren't too precious. The only thing that matters is that the punters in the sort of places you play like it. If stuff is dying a death then drop it and try something else.
5. Who? Anyway, get a 5 string?? EDIT: Youtube... is that a GIRL??? Dear me
6. This is just me... but I'd simply thank them and decline. There are several possibilities - they don't know what they play (bad!), they actually don't have any songs (worse!) or they are just dicking you around to see what happens (inexcusable!). My one experience of "oh, just come along you'll know some of the songs and we'll help you with the others" has mentally scarred me. It consisted of incredulity that I didn't know all manner of weird and obscure "standards" and or the singer making weird symbols with his fingers that (I later found out) denote chords in some offbeat religions. Sorry.... I'll shut up now
7. I had a serious think about opening a rehearsal studio some years back and came to the conclusion that I had no idea how they make ends meet. Never mind make a profit. So perhaps it isn't surprising. In the Glasgow area there are one or two with good equipment but, of course, they are almost impossible to get booked into. The rest are somewhere between OK and very poor.
8. I can't afford it but I just want to say "Ooooohhh"
9. I didn't actually pay cash for it so that's kinda neither here not there but the usual spirit of BC fairness shall prevail I'm looking at another possibility at the moment so you might be in luck... I'll let you know. Cheers.
10. Sigh!! I knew this would happen. I tried to warn you
11.
I've got cash waiting if you decide to sell.
Noted. If there was something for sale that I definitely wanted it would make life easier. I'd need to think of a price. I can't really afford to come out on the wrong end of the deal - although that always seems to happen
12.
Bump as a previous owner of this SUB, looks like it's done a wee tour of Central Scotland Great bass, I upgraded to a stunning late 80s 2EQ 'Ray, and this didn't fall down in its company at all, only let it go because, being a backroom noodler instead of a gigger, couldn't justify having two fretteds in the collection. Awesome bass, buy or trade wih confidence. Looks great with its other black scratchplate.
Thanks! Yes - it seems to have been around the houses a little. I took it on a bit of a whim but it's not really geting used. I have more work for a 5 at the moment.
13. I'm really only going for a trade at the moment... but in general, yes, I will post
14. Acquired one of these recently and they're damn good. Rather wide neck - which I think is a good thing - generally only seen on much more expensive instruments.
15. Yeh - I suffer from migraines and there's always a danger. I had the worst one I think I've ever had during a wedding gig. Root notes and a lot of shaking were the order of the day. Managed to make it through the gig before throwing up luckily. The b******s still made me drive the van home!!
16. just passing and I thought I would bump.... one or two interesting offers coming in. Not gone quite yet though.
17. bump for slightly re-shuffled description.
18. I acquired a nice SUB recently and while it's a great bass it was always intended to be a backup. It's pretty much indistinguishable from a real Stingray for a lot less money. However, I'm getting more into 5-strings again but am a bit fussy about string spacing (wide!). It's active and 2EQ. Condition is generally very good. It's met the ceiling at some point and been touched up but you have to look closely. Pretty much brand new light guage EB Slinkies fitted. I'm not desperate to move on the SUB but a backup 5-string would be more use. I'm really interested in a Yamaha TRB-5 (any variety), higher end BB or - even more unlikely - any Lakland 5 string. I would also consider something else with similarly wide spacing. The original thread is here for total transparency... http://basschat.co.u...e__pid__1279582 The only change is that it now has a (proper) black Stingray scratchplate but I still have the original silver one - you get both. I'm not particular about brilliant condition as long as it works. I could add a little cash to secure a nice instrument if it comes along. Try me
19. Your not seriously wanting to start a who'se the better player thread are you. With all due respect... b o r i n g
20. Where does it say that? I read through a few pages of comments and couldn't see anything about different scales. There were (of course) some comments about scale *lengths*. Sure you weren't getting confused with that?
21. Been to the Isle of Skye for a gig a couple of times from Glasgow. Worse than it might sound. A-roads are single track with passing places up in the Highlands.
22.
IMO this is what all players should do.
...and that's a whole other discussion
