Who are we kidding - does great bass tone REALLY matter?
jazzmanb replied to Al Krow's topic in General Discussion
Every bass player heard someone and wanted to pick a bass up,that will have been Tone and possibly image Yeah you have punters who don't know what makes a bands sound but there's plenty who clearly do.like i cared watching King crimson with 3 drummers . -
Cheap bass rigs that you love , and beat your high end rigs
jazzmanb replied to kevvo66's topic in Amps and Cabs
Still gigging my Peavey T max 500 Bought new in a combo with a 1x15 black widow, wasn't cheap mind £799 in 1994 combo cabinet long gone so the head is in a rack and i use 2 Peavey 210 cabs to get it full range Loads of crunch from the valve section. just moved onto lighter cab options -
Spiders taste lovely i hear
-
used ones are going for more

Even at todays price they may be out of some peoples reach The Aguilar look the part but Mark bass and Vander RED! ones are too garrish for me i like how the work and operate no middle man/free month trial etc and i think they will do well whatever price i nearly pressed the button on a pair of Two10's in the New year but the funds i thought would be there weren't and i chose cheaper options the only negative for me is the size, its a win win for weight etc but they lack a bit of presence on stage.Seen a guy with a one cab set up and it looked like his gear had been nicked
-
HI ALL ,GOT MYSELF A PF210HE AND A PF115HE EVERYONE WAS AROUND THE SAME PRICE THEN I SPOTTED AMAZON AT £50 CHEAPER GETTING AD POP UPS NOW FOR THE PF115LF CAB WHICH WAS A CAB I CONSIDERED £206.79 ! EVERYONE ELSE AT £315 ON THE SAME CAB WORTH A MENTION
-
Same as said,i was used to Jazz's then got a Jap P and all it really had was bottom, non of the options of the J.Then i got a Sadowksy metro vintage Jazz and even the passive tone is immense right across the strings

Sid Vicious - undervalued bass innovator?
jazzmanb replied to upside downer's topic in General Discussion
Fitted the bill for a Rock n roll/punk band ,likelable rogue who was 100% genuine hence ended up dead .Average player who got the job on looks Always thought similar on Simonon ,cool as anything but limited bassist People still chuntering punks couldnt play 40 years on have definitely missed the point -
If it gets results and you can indulge i suppose it doesn't matter what it takes Opposite for me,Foh.Treble but with loads of bottom on it. This is something no one mentions ,thousands spent on a rig which really is just a monitor then your sound guy loses you foh.

Nearest JJ esque Crunch i'v heard in recent years is Justin chancellor of Tool with his Wal.Immense live sound
-
Whoops ! Didn't check dates ,spot threads and assume they're current I thought all the gear got nicked hence the Sweden video with different guitars etc ? As much as JJ was my reason to start I by chance started on a jazz and have never really gone back .I Have a 90s jap 62ri Precision which is lovely but it's used in a more mellow way
-
No ,heard some stuff with his drummer and a new guitar guy , Mesmetics or something like that
-
Fugazi guy

i've gone with the flow with early bands because we were all mates but eventually you just move on when its not working

How do you know if you're any good?!
jazzmanb replied to Barking Spiders's topic in General Discussion
i do it for fun,as time has gone on although i'm not flash i seem to get compliments and get a asked to do stuff/join projects etc.Once i've gigged with people they want me to gig again. so i'm pleased about that.I'm self taught and don't read but i'm able to pick a tune up easily where readers struggle with no tabs (Mick karn for example).loads of low/mid level bands are seperate musicians playing the song seperately on the same stage ,i think i'm quite good at pulling people in to sound like a unit. -
I Don't really bother with their gigs now but the Baz version is superb and i laugh at the bring back Hugh mob because for the last few albums and tours they were a shadow of their former selves. As you say the crunch ended around La Folie. That tour was my first gig also. The early gigs/albums he had that white mucky coloured bass which was a ton weight apparently ,also the Marshall cab he had had a blown speaker so it was unique sound. The bass was nicked and he got the well known Black P.
-
His solo album was his Signature sound, that and Black and White.Like you The Raven for me is his finest hour but more for the content and sheer uniqueness than the tone. The early stuff as well was brilliant, that bass was nicked at some point
-
Don't gig too close together in 1 venue ,,although you know they are the same and it gets repetitive ,it doesn't to the punters. They are probably checking the band to see the song again.Couple of new ones thrown in and swapped occasionally We have a sort of set A and B which just involves a couple of different starts to the 2nd set to mix it a bit

No alcohol during Cruise Ship work at all? Is this the norm?

Softening your opinion towards the nice blokes
jazzmanb replied to Barking Spiders's topic in General Discussion
I think we are guilty of going the other way these days We know everything about everyone and form opinions that have little to do with the job they do Back in the day you got into a band and apart from the odd interview or tv appearance you knew nothing about them, you didn't really care, you loved the music. Not their politics, infidelity, drug habit etc I hear a lot of "can't stand him,he was on telly the other day, what a tosser etc" in answer to wether you like the band -
AMPS AND CABS IN GARAGE,BASSES ETC IN HOUSE
-
Watched a one of those" Sheriffs are coming" recently and they were chasing a private parking charge that the bloke ignored and it was a fortune due to rolling charges so this "they can't do anything" advice needs to be taken carefully.

I know its more me ,but i do my homework online and buy online, not into small talk and as they say "everythings cheaper on the internet" Even with stuff like my recent bareface cabs it was emails, same if i'm pricing deals, emails Probably goes back to starting out playing and going in local shop with the owner and his mates in their little clique The small shop thing can work,we have one in Sunderland, the only shop in the city but he won't be retiring to Spain anythime soon. He's very knowledgeable and clearly has contacts for stock away from gumtree/ebay etc and i think thats what keeps him open
