Plucking Hand Muting - Technique Advice needed
YouMa replied to ritch12's topic in Theory and Technique
Most of the notes I play when slapping are ghost notes so all the higher strings will be dampened anyway - and your thumb will probably be taking care of the lower strings anyway.
Id go with him on here ghost notes a deffo,i would also try to imagine you are playing a drum on your bass and try to forget about technique studies as much it will come naturally eventually. Stop thinking so much and listen to yourself. -
After a rather extended rehearsal on Sunday night ( a full 4 hours ) I am suffering. The callouses [sp?] on my fingertips have developed into full grown blisters! My ring finger and middle finger on my fretting hand My index, middle and ring finger on my plucking hand they're all blistered!! What do you do to prevent blistering? I've never been a fan of Elastoplast or the like as it reduces the feel - I need to feel the strings. So what do you do? Just to add - I don't slap. I pluck finger style. I no longer use a plectrum - it doesn't really suit - fingers is the only style that satisfies.
You are not playing enough. Play more if you use fingerstyle your fingers should catch on peoples wooly jumpers, you can also chew the hard bits off which is nice when no ones looking.

Agreed, it does a bit,i should have said blown there minds.

Im sure if hendrix or page had been given a "bad" later strat or les paul they would have still ripped the tits off the stoned out people in the crowd.
It isn't how old the bass per se... A lot of basses built in the past were made with the fashion of the day in mind. 50s and early 60s basses were built to sound a bit like uprights - a nice thumpy sound. Pickups positions, mutes, number of windings in a pickup, choice of woods and construction etc.... (i'm talking mostly about Gibson here - but i'm sure these examples fit other brands to varying extents) Plus in 1953, a lump of wood from a 400 year old mahogany tree was a lot more likely (and wood harvested from an old tree has different grain characteristics, and sonic qualities). A skilled builder (such as the 50s and 60s Gibson employees) could do things like tap a top and ascertain something about how it resonates, and whether it need carving more. How many people have that skill today? Today, really ancient trees tend not to be used, pickups have all drifted towards the bridge. Bass manufacturers don't necessarily use the same species woods, and pickup designs tend to favour a different sound. Nobody wants to sound like a thumpy double bass. The actual design, woods, and components of a vintage bass define it's sound. Had someone in 1955 built a bubinga bass with pickups right up against the bridge, i'm sure they would not have a particularly vintage sounding bass, even at 50 years old.
Rubbish,i like vintage guitars and a lot of the standards were better etc,but most of the early "electronics" employees were mrs bloggs from down the road in fullerton. And i know that the there was no holy grail search for woods, the guy was just trying to sell a decent guitar that would rival a hollow body. Wood from old trees is still available cheap as chips.

Anyone know of any good technical exercises?
YouMa replied to JamieBenzies's topic in Theory and Technique
I wouldnt bother exercising that sounds like a usa "shredders" trick if you want to play jazz get into jazz music there is no exercise if you like it, play it! If you like Jaco pastorious get as much footage of him as you can and observe. Looking at your info i cant see much what would be classed as jazz and you cant play something well you are not into. Jaco pastorius is fantastic but he wont turn you into the jimi hendrix of bass, besides i think he was a bit more fusion. Try something by charlie mingus or listen to ron carter,to get an idea of straight jazz. Your photographs are good. -

Some little bits i've recorded just using 'Garageband'
YouMa replied to Zoe_BillySheehan's topic in Recording
I think your timing is good as well zoe,you have layered the tracks nicely, you are sounding a lot more experienced than your 17 years. Good solid playing. -
Have you had a look inside. It may be just a wire to the power jack or something simple which has worked its way free, have a look and if so you could just solder it yourself.
There are a couple of open mic nights in Canterbury, one at the carpenter's arms and another at orange street music club. Not sure how frequently they happen though.
I gather the carpenters is no longer a gay bar. It was when i lived in canterbury or are you talking about a different kind of jamming.
Blimey, any more of this and there'll be enough for a mini MM bass bash! Now we all have to find unique selling points for our Miller Jazz Basses. Hmmm...welll....those Fender strings ARE poxy mine has new DR Hi-Beams and sounds like sexual chocolate! In any case, why are you deviating from the low side so quickly? I'm not saying this 'cos your Jazz is cheaper than my Jazz (honest!), but come on, you know that bass is waiting to be stroked! Step away from that twiddling nonsense on those 6 thin strings and let the funk filter through those fat strings....you know it wants to escape from that dark place within you....mwahahahaha.....come on, let the funk out!! :brow:
?

Its all in the hard pads on yer fingers. If you are getting good your fingers will find a tone you like. Use what you can afford or steal.

Midi tracking was just the same as a normal pickup for me,i just got bored of playing sitar on my bass and sold the lot,if you have spare cash its good fun though,in a way i wish i had kept my set up, i used to control vsti,s with mine. Theres nowt like playing a minimoog on your bass!
