Yes, I live for all the subtleties, exactly like you highlighted. Most bands do half-arsed versions of most covers, in my humble opinion of course. I see quite a few bands that don't even bother to put in the 'B' in the verse for She Sells Sanctuary for instance.
I don't know a great deal about this myself as I've only read about it, but it's apparently an issue with how they are wired. People have rectified the problem by re-wiring but I'm afraid I don't know what the correct diagram looks like. Either way, if I did stick with this bass I'm gonna rip the pre-amp out, it's not to my taste. But then again, it might be down to more than that tone wise. It plays so damn sweet, it just lets me down when I plug it in. I have to scoop all the mids to get a nice tone, which sucks because volume declines and so does your part of the mix. :-/
Peavey replaced the preamp for free if you asked them (not sure if they still will). I have the Millenium AC BXP and they swapped mine. Battery life jumped from 1 practice to a few years.

Our drummer has a Transit Connect - he fits in all his drum kit, our light rig, and all our PA (including 3 monitors) except our massive pair of 2x15 subs which our lead guitarist brings. I thinks it's a great van and very easy to load in or out with the back doors which lock out, and the sliding side door.

The basses you love to hate thread.

Plain P-basses, I really don't like that "tons of lower mids and nothing else" kind of sound. Blah! However I don't mind some, especially those with more full range pups and other pups added. I'm also aware that a lot of my favourite music was recorded with them. -
Yes, I've done it with my cheap Aria abg, with a a high action and massive thick pick. It just about worked (I am heavy handed anyway). If I do it again I'll be sneaking my little Trace practice amp in and hide it by my feet somewhere.

Shhhhhhh, we're trying to keep the Peavey thing quiet, we don't want them to ever get trendy

I can't afford to play for free as that means I would be running at quite a loss. The 'expenses' we get from playing mainly covers in pubs and clubs basically covers my costs, so I actually play for no net profit and that's fine because I enjoy it. I would strongly encourage bands to charge a reasonable amount (even if they don't need it). Even in my originals days we only played very occasional charity gigs for free (and usually got beers for nowt), for everything else we got enough to cover our fuel at least.

I'm interested in this statement: 'Its unbound genuine rosewood fingerboard follows the full 34" scale length' Does it really?

Mate, just be yourself, you don't NEED distortion if that's not your thing, neither do you need to double the guitar parts - although that could work in many places. I suggest that you immerse yourself in a few types of rock music, there often is a groove, it'll just be different to what you're used to.
Have you looked at any B52's material then? Dan
Not really metal enough for us. Some good songs on the first album though (which I have).

In my current band, our 2 singer/guitarists do the Cantrell/Staley close harmonies SO well, I don't think that they realise it themselves - the overall sound can be chillingly authentic.

It's all in the set-up and action. He sounded exactly the same when he played an Ibanez and a Lado.

Yes, I try to - I even try and get the same feel as the original by playing pick or fingerstyle to match, or playing a detuned 4-string rather than a 5-string (for low C or C# for instance) to get the feel of open strings ringing out in riffs. Like many I can't guarantee to get all the fills in the exact same order on Sweet Chile... I hear many bass players in covers bands missing out tricky bits or playing parts in the wrong octave. Those differences might not stand out on their own but when everyone in the band is playing very close to the original it really does make a difference!
Yes, Its the same with David Bowie, I wanted the tab for Ziggy Stardust and got the same message, and then realised that ALL Bowie tabs are blocked.
Is the Bauhaus cover version available?

You should have confiscated it

I'd highly recommend going through the PA, which also gives the option of putting some bass in monitors. This would let you get away with minimal backline.

In the days when I used to write original music, a few melodies and ideas came into my head first but I think more were from general noodling and jamming with others. I'm sure the more creative types do have ideas just popping into their heads.

A gig bag for an acoustic bass guitar would fit I'm sure, I got one from the gigbag company.
-
If we're gigging about 4 times a month and have the same band rehearsals I often won't practice outside of that. If I'm learning new songs I might do an hour every day so it really depends. I like to think that I'm being careful not to overdo it, but maybe I'm just lazy!
The volume issue is clearly down to the quality of the pickup the quality of which, unsurprisingly, is commensurate with the price of the instrument.
Cobblers, there people out there playing pro gigs on basses that cost a fraction of yours. Get your bass set up properly.

How should we deal with this promoter?
Adrenochrome replied to chaypup's topic in General Discussion
Just sleep with his partner, and then move on. -
Any normal long scale bass (34") with a heavy 4-string set ie 110 or 115 has worked for me in the past. For playing music written this way I find it more authentic sounding than jumping down to a fretted C, especially if there's a pedalled open C.
I'm not sure that I quite GET jazzes yet. Got a jazz recently as an up-grade from my p-copy and I'm still spending a lot of time fiddling with the pots each time I pick it up. I miss the simplicity of the P, but like the narrower neck. Amazed fender doesn't do hybrids as standard, plenty of people must want a jazz neck and p-body, or p-neck and jazz body.
I'm not a fan of the bass player but I've heard many good reports about the Pete Wentz bass which has a Jazz neck, P body and a better pup (maybe Seymour Duncan?).
-
Boring, dull, conservative bass. The reason that so many say they sound 'right' is because they reflect what was the status quo for so long. The only ones that sound any good have more full-range sounding pups in. All In my opinion, of course.

When do you start to rehearse your Christmas songs?
Adrenochrome replied to Chris2112's topic in General Discussion
Never. I might get talked into fumbling my way through a version of that Slade song if a gig is going well. I'd imagine for a pop/rock covers band a couple of Christmas numbers would be expected.
