  1. So basically. I have heard a sound that I'd like to try and make just because I really like how it sounds. But I don't know exactly what part of the is getting that sound I am looking for. Actually there are 2 sounds. First is Justin Chancellors sound. The best video i could find that isolated the bass is a cover. I know tool use a lot of effects, but what I'm looking for is that tone. What im wondering is where that comes from? Is it the kind of pick-ups, the amp or a peddle getting the sound? The sound i'm talking about I don't know how to describe, but it is that sound at the start. He also uses a pc instead of an amp, but like Justin Chancellor doesn't. I don't think!! The other sound I like is the crunchy (best word I can think for it) sound Marco Hietala gets in Nightwish (And I assume Tarot too but I am less familiar with them!) For the tl;dr how do Justin Chancellor and Marco Hietala get the tone that they do? Basically I'm on a budget and want to get a sound I like as cheap as I can.
  2. aha awesome well general opinion seems to be it wasn't a bad move which is a massive relief xD
  3. i guess.. but its very.. basic.. i dunno it definately sounds good. but i dont know if its the exact kind of good im looking for.. i mean at the moment im using a mexican made P-Bass w/ Seymour Duncans .. it sounds nice for sure.. don't get me wrong.. i love it... but its just the combo just is you know.. theres not as much room to customise as such... to be honest my knowledge on how much difference an amp makes is quite limited... obvious a head with more dials has a lot more variety (EQ etc) than one without.. but thats more or less as far as my knowledge goes xD
  4. Mkay so a little while ago i got my first bigger amp... i may have made a terrible mistake however... im sure you guys all know of the Fender Rumble series? well i purchased myself one a little while ago... the one i got was a rumble 350 watt however it only cost 250.. instead of the retail 400 or so... now have i made a good choice in setting myself up with a beast that in theory as its so big will do for a long while .. or just stabbed myself in the foot, by not allowing for much upgrade ? like did it make sense to go for the power.. or should i have gone smaller but maybe more down the cab and head road... ?
  5. thanks for all the wise words guys had i posted this and read this thread about a year ago i would have gone out of my way to imitate Harris' signature sound that makes maiden one of my all time favorite bands xD but this is good advice right here. It was Steve Harris that first made me pick up a bass. I heard that galloping bassline on Run to the Hills for the first time and i knew my heart was going to be set on 4 strings xD I posted this thread more out of curiosity on how he does what he does. Its something i've always wondered. I currently have a P-Bass i got from here which has yet to let me down. But i'm definately going to look into some rotosound strings, purely because if my bass playing hero uses them im sure i can at least try them. As we all know, you don't find that sound you just fall in love with overnight xD But does anyone know anything about Henkka from Children of Bodom? Again its just curiosity based on a lot of respect for a player
  6. The title may be a little misleading.. What im looking at more specifically is how two particular bassists get the distinctive sound they do. The two i had in mind were: -Steve Harris of Iron Maiden, i assume this was more about eq? but does anyone have a more detailed knowledge? - The other is Henkka Blacksmith Seppala from Children of Bodom. I think his sound is more about effects but some as Harris does anyone have any knowledge a little beyond that? This seem like somewhat silly questions, but i'm trying to develop myself as a musician/bassist, and these are two bassists in particular that are inspirational to me, i just want to understand their sound a little better is all.. Thanks in advance for any help im given Liam

So its finally time to upgrade BuT I have a budget x,x Thats where i need a little help.. What im looking for is an amp that can do a fair amount of sound.. that was terrible.. ill try again... I need to be loud enough to do like a small hall.. like a school hall ish sortof size... as sort of the loudest it can go... As for the guitar itself.. what im after is a fair tonal range.. but really anything that looks and sounds nice.. my budget for the two is only 500 though.. and even so it is a lot of money.. so idont wanna mess it up... So Please help me bass chatters.. your my only hope D:
