To me, Oasis's key strength was memorable tunes, and you'll find at least one good one on every album. That's why I pick them up at charity shops and car boots rather than pay full price! I worked out the bass-line for Cigarettes & Alcohol note-for-note for a previous band, and there [i]are[/i] some runs connecting the straight-8s root note sections. I agree though, there is not a lot of 'great bass' on there. By contrast, listen to any Bowie album and you'll hear brilliant, inventive bass-lines by brilliant, inventive players!

One of the most hazardous manouevres executed by drunkards is the rear somersault over the wedge monitor. One is obliged to step smartly backwards. Bad luck if one has pedals on the floor, cares about one's wedge monitors, or has nowhere to step smartly back to!

Played lead guitar with a 3-piece in which I have been a 'permanent dep' since [i]May 2011[/i]. Gig was at a social club and went fine on the whole. I have told the guy who runs the band that I am doing no more in the New Year, as I need to leave the calendar clear for my own band. So, this guy had a prospective replacement lead guitarist (who I will call Bloke) coming along to try out [i]on the gig[/i]. Blokee gets up in the break, and spends a lot of time setting up his amp and pedals (all separate, not on a board), and trying to tune his guitar. And his cables don't seem to be long enough. Half-way through our second set, Bloke is invited up and I take a seat in the audience. 3 mins later (an eternity in stage time), Bloke still can't get a sound from his rig, so I let him plug into my amp. His guitar output is way louder than mine, but he doesn't have the sense to back off the volume on his guitar. Volume wars ensue with drummer and vocalist. Bloke plays in 'bedroom blues' stylee. Lady from audience asks me if I am going back on, and is happy when I say yes, happier still when I agree to sing the number she has requested. I get back onstage and have to stand in the tiny gap in front of bloke's loose clutter of fx pedals. Is there a moral to this story? Hell yeah! (1) A gig is a gig, an audition is an audition. If you make a nob of yourself at an audition, you probably won't get the job. Do it at a gig, and the band may not get asked back. (2) Time and money devoted to ensuring that your kit is quick to set up, and reliable in operation, are well spent. (3) Silent tuning good, audible tuning bad. Just glad it wasn't 'my' band!

↑↑↑ What the last 3 guys said. Neither the Polytune nor Polytune Mini manuals mention a poly mode for bass, but I suppose it might become available as a firmware upgrade via the USB connector on the larger model.

If only you (or I) were closer I'd be there like a flash! I've been a Bowie fan since 1974 and have transcribed the bass lines for the entire Ziggy album...

A guitar amp is mainly amplifying mid frequencies. A bass amp has to cover lower frequencies as well, and has to cope with much bigger transients, i.e. sudden increases in sound level. If you play bass through a guitar amp, it will sound farty, and you may well ruin the speaker. Most decent bass practice amps should have enough tonal range to cope with the styles you mention. You will probably want 30 watts or more, or you will soon encounter unwanted distortion, as well as horrible sounds from the speaker not being able to cope. A good place to start might be something like the Roland cube.

Covers or originals? Genre? Length of set?

I tried bass through my (all-valve 15 watt) Tiny Terror and an Ashdown 1x15. Sounded rubbish, hissy, and way short on volume. May still repeat the exercise with the TT and BF Compact. Why? Just because!

Unless you are seriously debilitated by some age-related condition it's not really a factor. Motivation is though, so just do whatever floats your boat. Bands can be a hassle at times but the same goes for anything worth doing.

I started off like that but went through quite a few basses before I worked out what I liked. Got an Ashdown combo to do it all but somehow couldn't resist the matching extension cab. I now have one head and cab for gigs plus a practice amp for ny music room and domestic jams. Titchy cab on order should mean I can use essentially the same rig for all situations and lose the practice amp. But I have 3 basses, and for that reason - I'm out!

I would put a sheet of that anti-slip rubber mesh between the rack case and the cab - I wouldn't like to see the stuff on the top go walkabout!

You're dead right [b]iconic[/b], the bass guitar is a solid-body adaptation of the double bass, which is a member of the string family of the orchestra. The double bass is the odd one out anyway, as it is tuned in fourths (E-A-D-G low to high) whereas the rest are tuned in fifths (e.g. violin G-D-A-E low to high).

The judges are not looking for the same things that you or I would be, say as musicians auditioning a singer. For them, and for Simon Cowell in particular, the ideal winner will make the programme format owners lots of money by:[list] [*]Selling records on the back of their looks, personality etc; [*]Not questioning the contract they have to sign; [*]Recording formulaic songs fed to them by the organisers' writing team (and not pester Simon with their own compositions, no matter how good); and [*]Generally doing as they are told. [/list] In short, they are after a product they can sell, and a publishing rights revenue stream. If the contestant can more-or-less sing, so much the better! When I criticise contestants for going off key, Mrs Axe always claims that I am not qualified to do so because I'm not performing in front of millions on national TV. I always reply that I get paid for my performances in less prestigious venues, and as a jobbing musician for over 20 years I am perfectly qualified to assess whether or not a singer makes the grade!
