While I don't doubt the experiences of the respondents so far, I do think that a lot of us hear with our eyes and muscles. If we heft in a heavy piece of gear, we expect it to sound "heavyweight" too... Maybe another blind test is called for (like the one relating to cone diameters)?
This is a challenge that needs to be taken up on a BC Bass Bash, along the lines of Lozz's 'blindfold' Precision test.

I've never bothered trying to measure the height of the strings off the fretboard. I go for as low an action as I can that will still allow me to dig in a bit with my plucking hand without too much fret buzz. I have a lower action on my Sandberg than on my old P, and I put that down to vorsprung durch technik

How do you store/transport your cables/leads?
JapanAxe replied to Mornats's topic in Accessories and Misc
Often overlooked but should be standard practice for anyone using cables!
Yep, over-under coiling and Velcro cable ties. No tangles on my watch! -
I had one of these (different finish). Almost too many tonal options, including a great P sound and a lovely fat bridge HB.
Jepp, sorry... But wherever you write something about the Veyron, the first answer is something like that. Over and over again... Ok, I will compare this amps at our practice session today...
Cheers disssa! Seriously, there must be many bass players wondering whether the Veyron amps are a worthy substitute for the Streamliners. Looking forward to hearing your comments...

What's the general standard of player who reads Basschat?
JapanAxe replied to lou24d53's topic in General Discussion
I describe myself as a semi-pro bass player and guitarist. That has more to do with how I approach the engagements I do, and the bands who I work with, than with my level of technical ability. I see plenty people more capable than me, and a fair few less capable, so I am somewhere in the middle ability-wise. However, I am more useful to a band than a sh!t-hot player who doesn't prepare for the gig, turn up on time, help with the load-in/out, dress appropriately, etc... -
One more vote for the Ultra-Low in and boosting some of the mids using the midrange control. Works for me on my SVP-Pro
Just out of interest, is that just for recording, or are you feeding the signal to a power amp and speaker on stage, or straight into the PA?

I am getting this up for sale before I change my mind as I do love the sound of this amp. However I have just put down a deposit on a very special and rather expensive amp head, and I can't avoid selling either this or my Streamliner to free up funds and cupboard space, not to mention keeping Mrs Axe at bay! This is (I believe) a late 90s SVT 3 Pro, i.e. not one of the earlier 'III' models. It was built in the USA and is a substantial bit of kit. It can be rack-mounted (2U) as long as you ensure adequate ventilation. It delivers 450W RMS into 4 ohms, or 275W RMS into 8 ohms. You can find a summary and the owner's manual on this page. For those not familiar, the 3-band EQ (with selectable mids) is built around three 12AX7 valves (not just a token one!), there is a switchable 9-band graphic, and there is a further 2-valve stage (one 12AXY, one 12AU7) which drives the MOSFET power section. The control labelled TUBE GAIN actually controls the plate voltage in this driver stage - once you have set your stage volume, you can create some valve compression by backing off the control (thus restricting the headroom); or turn it up full for maximum dynamic range. This is not one of those amps that has yielded its full potential by 10 o'clock on the volume control. It will happily run with the master at, say, 2 o'clock (as I always did), and there is room in the gain structure to extract more volume by using the level control on the graphic if you wish. There are plenty of posts on BC which attest this is not the 'quiet' amp some have claimed! Everything works. Some of the push switches make a slight pop when operated, and the exterior is somewhat scuffed and worn. The only notable damage is to the DI level pot, which has been broken off. The shaft can still be turned, and the ground lift can still be operated by pulling on the end of the shaft. (Please! This is a family forum.) These amps need to be properly biased to work at their best, and I have fitted a multi-turn trimmer pot to make this easier. It is currently optimally biased, and should not need further attention. You can see what I did here, and there are various gut-shots in the same thread. The current (Far East built) SVT 3 Pro's retail at £889 at GAK. I am asking [s]£420[/s] [s]£375[/s] £345, less than half the new cost, and UK delivery is included. You can save yourself £20 by collecting from me in Swindon or Oxford; other meet-up type arrangements by negotiation. Please ask any questions about the amp here in this thread, but keep discussions about money etc to private messages. SALE ONLY for the reasons given above!
Why have different speakers and configs if you can't hear the difference and a stage sound is what you play to... the audience doesn't matter from your POV if you are running FOH.
GAS mainly!
-
I've tried it both ways. Both cabs, on their own, are quite different. But when you put 'em one on top of the other - it's real hard to tell the difference ..... if there is any real difference to hear. Depends where you stand. If you are standing right beside them - then you can hear the different cabs. Take yourself more than three yards away - and they sound like one combined bass sound.
Exactly. We don't hear 2 bass sounds from 2 cabs run together, just one. The cab nearest to our ears may predominate if we're very close, otherwise they just blend together. As for the audience, they're not exactly going to notice a difference!
With a 2x10 and 1x15 it's hard to predict what that difference would be with either cab on top, so suck-it-and-see is as valid an approach as any. If neither cab has a tweeter and they're both receiving a full-range signal, I would listen to it both ways, and if there's no major difference then it comes down to stability and aesthetics. The idea that the 2x10" must go on top comes from the old "10s for the highs, 15s for the lows" dictum, which has been done to death on here.
I concur.
I [s]don't[/s] think you mad to want it, it's bloody [s]gorgeous[/s] hideous.
Fixed. That is one fugly bass.
2x10 on the top. From a mechanical perspective it's far more stable and from an audio perspective it's easier to hear the higher frequencies if they're not round your ankles.
If the 2x10 has a tweeter then fair enough. Otherwise, it probably won't make much difference sonically.
