1. Spirit of Radio by Rush. Man, this tune is really pushing my playing ability.
2. Listen to some Allman Brothers albums, Eat a Peach, Live at The Filmore etc. Awesome quality blues with some nice jazzy chords thrown in and some unusual time signatures. Allman Bros
3. In no particular order- John McLoughlin ........Mahavishnu Orchestra Warren Haynes.......Government Mule/Allman Bros Duane Allman......Allman Bros Vernon Reid..........Living Colour Neil Schon........Journey Jeff Skunk Baxter.........Steely Dan/Doobie Bros Leslie West....Mountain Paul Kossoff........Free Robin Trower Stevie Ray Vaughan
4. Play in our band called Stealer. The whole set is devoted to the music of 60's / 70's blues rock icons Free. www.myspace.com/stealer1 Man, I just love playing Andy Fraser's basslines.
5.
Ha ha Rush are the most pretentious band in the world with there heads firmly in there arses.
If highly skilled musicians = pretentious, I'm happy with that. The majority of us musicians always stride to improve our playing skills to a higher level, then pretentious we all shall be. I would opt for the category of being a pretentious musician rather than a crap musician.
6. Each to their own. Never got the punk thing, most of it was a bit thrashy and very simple as illustrated by a lot of these clips on this thread. As for the guy shouting out to the crowd that Matt Freeman is the best bassist in the world, he needs to get his head out of his arse. Sloppy solo, good for punk I guess but when put in perspective does not even measure on the scale against the likes of Geddy Lee etc.
7. I saw them a couple of times in their heyday and have a few of their albums, at the time when the Feelgoods, Blues Band and Nine Below were really cooking. I saw Nine Below again at the Peterborough Beer Fest in August 2008, not so hot as they used to be. Dennis Greeves had a dodgy guitar strap that kept falling off about every two minutes, very unprofessional, you would think the guy would carry a spare one!!!!!!
8. We had an awesome first gig with STEALER last night. The venue was superb, as was the in house PA and sound guy. A really receptive crowd made it a night to remember. One minor complaint, although my Mark Bass rig was only just ticking over, some folks in the restuarant two floors up were complaining their plates and cutlery were rattling on the table. That's the first one out of the way and now really looking forward to the next one in two weeks time.
9. After ten months of rehearsals we have our first gig on Saturday night at Mama Liz's Voodoo Lounge in Stamford, Lincs. We are all seasoned musicians who have been playing live for many years but there is still the excitement of playing your first live gig with a new formed band. We all currently play in other bands but we all have a passion for the band from the late sixties and early seventies called FREE, so we decided to form a musical tribute to them, it's certainly not a look a like band. It's been a real pleasure learning the cool laid back basslines of Andy Fraser. www.myspace.com/stealer1
10. A pretty poor show it was. Being a fan of the Motown era I was looking forward to Martha Reeves and the Vandellas but was extremely disappointed and embarrassed watching their performance. Mr Holland uses the word "legend" to descibe too many of his guest performers, he introduced Martha as one but the performance was aweful, the woman can clearly no longer sing, it sounded similar to my Granny singing at Christmas. She needs to be wheeled back to her nursing home and retire from singing gracefully, let people remember her as she was years ago. I was also expecting a magic performance from Annie Lennox but sadly let down again, her voice seems to have lost all its warmth and soul, all we got was a rasping shouting delivery. The Hold Steady just look like a load of Bank Managers thrashing away, nothing new and not particulary good musicians. Ting Tings, don't get them at all, throw away pop, will be forgotten in six months time. Best vocals on the night for me goes to Ruby Turner........always delivers.
11.
Maybe not the most technical or flashiest player, but Mani's certainly helped make the bass cool again & he is entertaining. For that reason, I'd also put Paul Simonon as a close second & possibly Peter Hook third.
Peter Hook a total dickhead, looks and plays bass like a total t*at. Colin Hodgkinson has been setting high standards for many years, listen to some material from Back Door. The guy out of the Blockheads......awesome.
12. I have a Musicman Stingray and I am interested in when you should change the battery, I know the obvious answer would be when its flat. I must have had this bass at least four years and the battery has not gone flat although I have just changed it for a new one this week.
13.
Friendly Fires are very, very popular. They should be appearing on shows like this.
My uncles a fireman, from their performance the other night they need a good hosing down. Absolutely right the comment about them jumping around the stage like t*ats, maybe they should concentrate on learning to play their instruments properly. To be honest that female folk singer was also s*ite, the band could'nt even keep to time, bloody awful.
14. I know music is a very subjective thing but I have to comment on last nights show. A band from St Albans was featured called Friendly Fires, what a load of garbage. Clearly from their performance have very little musical talent and bounce around on stage looking like a bunch of idiots. Why are bands of this calibre given the exposure they clearly do not deserve on prime time BBC music shows? I totally understand that the show has slots for brand new bands but surely they need to be of an acceptable standard. This outfit would not meet the requirements to obtain gigs on our local pub gigging circuit. If this is showcasing the best of the new British talent, the future of music is going down the plughole.
15.
I hadn't spotted that Todd was over, thanks for that Last tour was great - didn't play a single one of his 'hits' from what I remember which upset a few people but we thought he was really good.
Todd is playing at - Norwich Waterfront Nov 22nd London Kentish Town Forum Nov 23rd
16. Journey are just awesome, quality players all round. I had the pleasure of seeing them live in June this year and was blown away by their performance. The new vocalist Arnett is every bit a match to Steve Perry's vocals. This band make the current crop i.e. Kaiser Chiefs, Artic Monkeys etc look very amateurish in their live performances and musical ability. The reason why a lot of the big live acts from way back (Toto, Foreigner, Tod Rundgren, Uriah Heep) are touring again is because people are becoming sick of the same old dross being played by the current crop of over hyped bands, and want to see seasoned musicians/vocalists who can actually play live. I'm not just into Rock, I'm also well into Soul,Funk, Jazz, Blues etc.
17.
On Halloween/1st Nov we're playing Ebeneezers [private booking] and the Cherry Tree both in Peterborough. Both of these have bands but I'm not sure that Ebeneezers has many live bands on at the moment. ...and yes it is a long drive for me but I'm kipping in my van to keep the costs down.
Done Ebeneezers a few times before with previous bands, not really our scene as it's basically a working mens club and they play bingo in between sets!!!!! Played the Cherry Tree on numerous occasions and know Ann and Jess very well but we are trying to break away from the usual local pub circuit. Many Thanks anyway.
18.
few in my part of East Anglia.... www.brewery-tap.com used to be a very good venue, not as good these days but still ok with big stage and in house pa/engineer and has alot of tribute bands including 'heartbreaker' a paul rodgers tribute. ipswich railway has tribute bands most fri/sat nights - though there are some tales of the management being complete gits - having said that i believe its being taken over by someone new soon. www.thebrickmakers.com/ one of the main venues in Norwich, has tribute bands on quite often - good stage, pa, lights etc but difficult to get in with 'cliquey' band booker! lady of the lake - good large pub venue with stage, lights but no inhouse pa - has all kinds of bands Where is The Lady of the Lake located? peace c
19.
Who are Free?
You must be very young. This band was fronted by one of the best vocalist ever (in my opinion) Mr Paul Rodgers, now fronting Queen for their current tour and album.
20. I'm currently in a new band that is playing a full set of material by the band Free. We are not going out as a looky likey tribute act but are playing the songs as a tribute to Free. We are very passionate about the material and play it as close to the original sounds as possible. Although Free were a four piece outfit we have an additional fifth player on keyboards as about 80% of Free's recordings featured keyboards (hammond, piano, mellatron). We have been rehearsing since February and are now ready to hit the live music circuit. Could anyone out there recommend any venues that would book our type of band? We are currently working on posters, demo's and a website.
21.
Dave has probably forgotten..... he's not as young as he used to be Are you talking about Ken? Do you have a contact number for him? Thanks Marcus
Dave keeps everything close to his chest even when it comes to new women in his life!!!!!! I don't know the guys name in Brotherhoods Roundabout but I was very impressed with his bass playing skills.
22. Visited the Sole man at his shop today, he didn't mention the bassman was leaving. There's not many bassists in the Boro who could fill Jamies shoes as most are rock players and not really into the groove and slap. Nicks probably the man, although there is another superb player in the local prog rock outfit Brotherhoods Roundabout.
23. Norman Watt-Roy from the Blockheads........just awesome. Now the awful.................Peter Hook. Boring same old riffs , terrible style which makes him look a total pratt while playing on stage.
24. Went to Nottingham Arena last night to see Thunder, Whitesnake, Def Leppard. I especially went to see Thunder and Whitesnake, but Def Leppard stole the show with a great set and stage setup/lighting. The bass player in Leppard had the most awesome bass sound I have ever witnessed, stacks of Ashdown cabs each side of the stage. The bottom end coming out of the PA made your stomach rumble and made the old trouser legs flap.
25. The guys in the shuttle did say they could hear it out in space when I was gigging with it last week.
