I always keep an eye out on new basses though I seldom buy. I raised some cash recently and have been looking a bit more carefully. Now, I expected a G&L Tribute to cost from £450-550 from looking around in the recent past. On Thomann they are now £750!!?! How has that happened?!

Like the many many YouTube bass lessons there could be some good similar resources for singers? It's on my list of things to do when I eventually have time to myself.

One of... The Amy Winehouse gig in Nottingham 2004 when nobody knew who she was so I didn't go, didn't want to go alone. Still kicking myself. Or the Cold Play gig (before they were really pompous) where a girl I liked from work came with me and I should have told her that I liked her - she knew but sometimes you need to say something! Or the first gig I ever played. Instead of trying to look like John Entwistle (bored) I should have got more stuck in.

There's a guy on the forum who collects Peavey's... Check the bass guitars section and there's a million new bass day threads from him with probably every single Peavey bass model there's ever been! He would know the inside track on these.

Personally I think any good hefty gigging amp is going to find it hard to be used as a home quiet practice amp. Unless you know you will always have a solid PA that can handle bass i would get a cheap second hand gigging amp, maybe pay a tenner getting an amp tech to service it, then if you really want a modelling amp for home use find one that fits the size and all other requirements. Sorry it's not the answer you're looking for but in my view you're looking for two things that won't come in the same package.

I'm kind of lucky in that there isn't masses of choice for a lefty, if I was right handed I would probably have more basses. I was very happy with just one bass for years, and it would be possible to go back to that. I think it's easy now to collect a few low-mid range basses but is it worth it? Would it not be best to have a "beater" and a "prized possession" and nothing else? I don't know. I'm still looking for the prized possession

Got rid of a cab that I was using, just because it was excessive having two fifteens at every gig and the Mrs hated them cluttering the spare room. I also have shifted some pedals, more may go, and got rid of one of my four basses. I'm tempted to get another bass but I don't know what I would get that wouldn't push out one of the existing three. Waiting until January sales to see if there's a bargain to be had but not holding my breath.

Hope you enjoy it! A lot of people think they're a bit naff but I completely disagree. It goes to show that when we had a photographer at our gig there were more photos of me with the Hohner for the last few songs than there were of the entire band over the whole set. They're also light weight and reduce the chance of smashing headstocks with the guitarists... Though that may only be us kack-handers!

Having owned, until very recently, a Hohner B2A I would recommend that over the steinberger. The Hohner second hand is far cheaper than the new steinberger and if you get one from the right period you not only get active electronics but EMG pickups too. They do sound fantastic, I would recommend GHS strings too. My only reason for selling was the string spacing was too tight for me to be making the change from the Fenders I play more regularly. My drummer did shed a little tear when I sold mine.

The EQ button is an on/ off so you can either use the eq or not. For example, if you're running a pre amp pedal then you'd probably want to turn off the amps EQ. I personally never bothered with the deep or bright buttons but others may use them. I guess I'm the amp marketers worst customer! I want it as basic as possible!

I had a toneman combo, great little amp! Stick all the rotary eq dials on 12 o'clock then twiddle from there. I used to have bass at 1 to 2 o'clock, treble at the same then the mids either 12 o'clock or slightly pushed up. Not complicated but gave a good "through the mix" tone with the band when playing either p or j bass.

I started playing bass aged fifteen and got my first five string for my eighteenth birthday. Having a good quality bass with more options on it really opened up and improved my playing. I was by no means a master of the four string at that point! My five string was relatively cheap but these days a good bass can be bought for less than five hundred quid! Obviously second hand gets you more for the money too. If you want to do it and you can afford it I say jump right in. It doesn't take long to get used to it and it could really benefit your playing. I know... Especially the Daphne blue version!! I do like the Sire vintage V7... And the V9... And the M7... And their PJ bass. All quality basses within my range. And there's an ibanez model with nordstrands kicking about too... Plan is that my jazz bass will wear flats, P bass remains the same (flats and badass bridge) and my fretless remains my only fretless. But it could all change!

Rikki that is the 6 million Lire question! Even with the paucity of options for lefties I'm spoiled for choice. I have a lot covered with the three basses I already own but I am tempted by most of the Sire basses, the Warwick Star, a Warwick corvette if I save enough, a fender USA or Japanese jazz, or even something custom made but costing less than a grand... It's all to play for! Oh, and then eBay and the forum throw up the odd second hand bargain too.

For the first time in many years I may be in the market for a new bass. I've sold off some gear that I wasn't using and I want to treat myself a bit, but being savvy about it I don't want to rush out with my pocket money to the nearest sweet shop... Are "January sales" something that the big music retailers join in with? There's been some lefty bargains on eBay recently but I've managed to restrain myself. I am attracted to buying a new instrument rather than second hand but just want to know what the state of play is likely to be. Thanking you in advance!

Not having the A or D on my four strings would mess with my head completely. Only ever broke rubbish very cheap strings in my teens when trying to learn to play slap style. Hasn't happened since but even if I only want to play one bass in the gig there's always another either in stage or in the car, don't want to ruin a gig by mucking up trying to play three stringed.

There's one at every gig! If you enjoy the bass and think you'll get something from it then get it. I was always told I'd look like a n0b playing a headless body less bass but it sounded amazing and the photographer got loads of great shots, more shots of me with that bass than the first half with my precision. I did play in shorts and hiking sandals though and got rightfully slated for that, but never the bass.

A mate of mine had one of these and played tons of gigs with it, always sounded good in his hands. £50 is a good deal from where I'm sat

For the EB1 if I wanted that style id go to Eko and probably safe a few quid?

There's loads that dont "deserve" it but you see the chap from Fall Out Boy endorses a squier, good move because that's his audience. The Nikki Sixx signature bass however is a pj on a Thunderbird body and costs over a grand. No way!
