2.
No difference at all in my eyes. I can accept that a sophisticated rearrangement of a jazz standard is more defensible than a copy of someone elses but I still think that a LOT of jazz (including ALL of the jazz I play) simply follows what is, from a conceptual point of view, the path of least resistance. I am researching a biography on Paul Chambers and I recently interviewed a Detroit bass player who had the same teacher as Chambers. He still has a copy of the set list from his first gig in Detroit in 1954. There was NOT A SINGLE TUNE on that list that I hadn't played in the previous fortnight (in Suffolk in 2007, 53 years later). Is that the way you want your music to go? I sure as hell don't.
Nope, you're right there bilbo, didn't Herbie Hancock refer to all the standards as "Museum Jazz" that there is a need for musicians to move on particularly in jazz?
  3.
Well boys and girls... My SVP-Pro arrived a few hours ago...so far, so good!!! Very interesting little box indeed, certainly has a bit more modernness about it compared to my SVT, but in a good way. The SVT, which i got back yesterday after a pre-amp re-valve and service...is sounding flippin' awesome!!! The highs seem a little more surpressed and less in your face, which i'm loving! The SVP-Pro doesn't capture that quite the same, but it seems to have a bit more fullness to the tone maybe. Mind you, i've not really tried them properly...i don't have a power amp so i'm fiddling around with FX loop send and receive jacks at the moment Still...the SVT-IIP pre-amp is of massive interest!!! I don't want to let my amp go if i don't have to, but if i could get the pre-amp version, i'd be sorted
Was it available after jamm?
  4.
I did an early Heavy Metal gig and broke the A sring on my old Aria SB700. Now when that happens, something happens to the set up that renders teh D and G strings unusable so I had to do the last three songs in the set with only the E string. Tony Levin eat your heart out. Funny thing is, no-one noticed Never broken a string since!
Broke a string....!! you musta been laying it down some bilbo
  5.
Thanks. Your mother also thinks so!
I don't get it!
  6.
Now, if one of these tribute bands gets up and plays 'Comfortably Numb' note perfect, its a obviously a perfectly acceptable product for the market place, I acknowledge that, but how can that possibly be of equal merit to Pink Floyd doing the original? Or Porcupine Tree bringing their own slant on Prog Rock? Or IQ or Spock's Beard (I have never heard any of these by the way)?
It's not of equal merit...IMO but the good tributes, they deserve a pat on the back for what they recreate, I've tried it in an established Tribute Act and it's so hard to do things as close as possible to the original....I lasted maybe half a dozen gigs and was asked to leave because every now and then would put my slant on certain tracks. I may be wrong here but Isn't it The Australian Pink Floyd Tribute that have the backing of Roger Waters or certain members of Floyd???? Porcupine Tree....I'm not sure how that has ended up in the Prog genre. Is it Prog? I'm not certain about that but there again Prog is a huge field to be in, same as Jazz. So what would be the difference in a band playing a set of standards and a band playing a set of classics? (not tribute)
  7.
If I were you, i'd pack the DI, see if anyone minds you borrowing an amp as well, if they mind, just use the DI. Then after the gig while you're feeling good about playing together, talk to the band and ask if anyone else is bored and try and work on new stuff. If you've lost a guitarist, get yourself some pedals/a Pod! I worry that the lack of communication in my band meant that our drummer would rather have gone home and leave us in a state of suspension, than talk through the issues we had (which were mainly created by not writing enough and playing sh*t gigs with too much heavy equipment too far away).
That's a good point there cheddatom!!!
  8.
Thanks Jase, much appreciated That stuff was done when we were a 4 piece and there are certain things we can't recreate with only 1 guitar - I have thought about recruiting another guitarist but we've not got that far yet. I don't want to leave them, I just don't think there's much mileage left in it, which is a crying bloody shame!
Yeah, easy for me to say "carry on, carry on"...just I could hear the stuff as 3 pce but totally understand where you're coming from with recreating written parts. Agreed, it would be a shame if it lost mileage, it's a great sounding band!!
  9.
This is my band. I have an errant drummer (aren't they all? ) who seems to view rehearsing as optional and a recently departed guitarist, taking us to a 3 piece. We've tried to adapt what we've got to work as a 3 piece, but to be honest, the songs need totally deconstructing, or sacking off and starting again. I think we're getting a bit bored with the same songs and haven't done any writing for a while. Now might be the time to call time on it or at least have a break for a couple of months and come back to it, but to be honest, if we do come back to it, I'd be tempted to do something completely different. I'm still playing in a covers band and actually, I think playing covers to a pub full of people who are clearly having a good time takes the shine of doing the original stuff to 3 people in a crappy bar! I sort of wonder why make all the effort?
Sounds really, really good! I love "Love Twist The Gift"....WHY are you thinking of leaving these guys????? That's good stuff to use as a 3 pce...surely
  10.
I just thought I should point out that I've taken my rig to every other gig we've ever done - hauled it across fields and up fire escapes, squeezed it into tiny cars and hired vans to cart all of our gear 70 miles. I just can't be bothered although more seriously, perhaps it's my commitment to my band that I'm having trouble with.
Ahh,I recognise this...I get you mate, I'm at the "can't be bothered/need a change soon" stage myself...maybe I'd be toying with the DI box Idea too if it was an option on a gig.
  11. I've recently upgraded to a Hartke 810 from Hartke 410....best thing I've done in a while concerning gear, so much more punch and definition, it's not so much a volume issue...it's clarity, the band are happy with being able to hear me at a comfortable level. Also not as difficult as you'd think to move around, wheel it into a gig instead of carrying two 410's....but each to his own.
  12. Take your rig man!....How long can it take? Not long to strip it down and get it in the car and bugger off! Don't think I could rely on a DI box alone....bit risky I reckon.

    Hartke HA 4000
Great news. It's always nice when a you can fix your own amp, even better when it's free!
Aye it is...used it for a two gigs over the weekend...not a peep of trouble. The only thing I did get in touch with Hartke for was a case for the HA4000, they don't make them, thought they might have done something along the lines of the HA3500a...you know, the amp type casing. I'm a little concerned about the over hang of the Westfield case it's in at the mo...too much of it hanging over the back of the cab.

    Orange...
I had an Orange Matamp years ago...late 70s. Bought it at this warehouse place in Chalk Farm. I think it was actually a guitar amp. Sounded beautiful and was super loud. Heavy on the valves though. Last act it had was when it caught fire during a rehearsal (we were jamming Japans' Adolesent Sex at the time...smoke was pouring out of it, then flames started licking up the back. We got the plug out of the wall and threw a load of water on it. Eventually sold the burnt out unit for refurb to a place on Denmark Street for £50.00. P
I bet that looked awesome....that's rock and roll legend stuff is that
  15. I prefer to buy second hand, 3 basses, 2 second hand and 1 new. Over all cost, approx £1200. My rig is second hand too...Hartke, £300....£1500 for a set up that works for me, I would probably have the same tone if I spent £1500 on a rig and £1200 on a bass.
  16. The Jonas Hellborg Warwick Preamp?
  17.
What if you were invited to jam with one of your heroes and it just so happened that the song chosen was Mustang Sally? Extreme example but just say...
I'd be there...like a babbling fool, playing utter nonsense, forgetting everything I ever learned (like you do when trying a bass out in a shop)
  18. I'd love to see the flight case for those....things!
  19.
Keep Music Live But only the bands I Like I new a sound engineer once, on Saturday night he was full of opinions about integrity of other people and the bad points of other engineers. Monday to Friday he fitted carpets Sunday he rested.
Classic! Got shot of my integrity years ago, I don't care two hoots about it. I'll play anywhere, play anything, play how I feel...if nobody likes it they can always leave.....and quite often they do
  20. I'd have been happy with just Glenn Huges, not a fan of Mr Coverdale I'm afraid.
  21.
Ooooo...that's the pre-amp section out of my SVT II (old non-pro version). I didn't realise they did a pre-amp version. I'd be interested in one of those if i were to see one!!!
I had mine 15 years ago or more maybe! I don't know how recent that pic is but the site it came from were selling one for $325.
  22. Leo was right.......Leowasright weird!
  23.
This is a bit off topic but I actually prefer Fender guitars then basses…weird?
Strats are awesome, along with telecasters too!
