1. All of the above mentioned so far had a huge impact on me....one other chap who I reckon always deserves a tip of the hat is Burke Shelley BUT!!! the best ever for me is (already mentioned) Billy Sheehan. I LOVE "BEST EVER THREADS"
  2.
This will be predictable! I absolutely love the attitude bass so much so I would recommend it to any pbass player! I have played mostly pbasses but always found them to be lacking in real whooomfff. I had the pleasure of playing a telebass and then an eb3, both had the whooomff factor but not the definition I wanted! When I played my first attitude (cheaper special edition) it felt right in terms of sound and feel! I saved enough to buy a signature model it surpassed my expectations and has been a wonderful instrument to play as well as feeling right at home with me and my chubby body shape! lol! andy
Yeah, using sig bass is great, I was really made up with my Geddy, a guitar player I know uses a Kotzen Tele and an Eric Johnson Strat...great guitars and I bet The Attitude is a brilliant bass to play, I'd love to try one
  3. Yep, mine do. I'm really pleased with my three at the moment, although every now and then I fall out with my 62 RI Jazz, I have radius issues with it. The other two you can take anywhere...they don't bring shame on the family
  4. Hi bass player spinn, welcome to basschat If you take a look in the Gear Forum and do a search you'll find plenty of good information and advice on all sorts of strings.

    Level Frets
I Have a particulary rare Hofner 500/1 with 'level frets' which apartently, according to Hofner amongst others, was made like that but is a rarity. If the fretts had been filed down to be level with the frettboard then you would get at lest one tale tale sign of this being done in the form of markings on the board - however slight. The board can be re-waxed and polished but it is still hard to get it looking seamless. If frett markers is a practice that is going on then it is far more likely to be an original custom. It is just a shame that the seller of this bass dosen't know anymore about the origins of it. Here is a few picture of my bass, which has two sets of 'fretts' - one in maple and the other in bone for the tones and semi-tones. as you can see from the pictures there is no way of removing the fretts and replacing them with wodden and bone ones without massive damage to the frettboard and the MOP edging - backing up what Hofner said.
That'a a strange one, never seen that before.
  6. I can't deny that Billy had an influence on me and I did Start to use some of the solo techniques but slowly realised that it wasn't me at all, like many others I still love it. This is what happens when a player concentrates on only one aspect of Sheehan, I just think it's utterly useless. 7.
no stripe on the back of the neck just a lovely gloss finish & about the same weight as my recently departed MIA jazz
Cool! Looking at your pics...there isn't much difference, your MIM looks like a MIA and your MIA looks like a MIM
  8.
I was kidding really and I do have a lot of respect for his playing, but I'm not too fond of how Sheehan's style emphasises technique over musicality. I'm a big fan of advanced bass techniques but I prefer artists who perfect them and look for ways to make them original and above all musical such as Michael Manring and Jean Baudin. As far as fast ensemble bass playing goes I'd rather listen to Geddy or Entwistle who both do/did all that and so much more, with so much more musicality to what they play.
Not sure I agree with you there Oscar, although Sheehan is known for his solo's, techniques etc, I think he is also an accomplished "bass player" and is without doubt capable of the supporting role, understands song and melody....c'mon, he's got to be one of the most respected bass players in Rock music.....I don't think it's fair comment to say he's just a technician
  9.
Thanks for the kind words, plus it's always nice to hear other people make them sound even better! It's a Gus G3 fretless These 4 basses are the main ones I use. For fretted the Gus G3 5-string has no real competition - it nails all the tones I want and plays like a dream. When it comes to fretless I still haven't found a single bass that does everything, but between them these three do it.
Nice one BigRedX.....some good samples of the fretted version, sound cool
  10.
Good guy, pity about his bass playing though
What don't you like about it?
  11.
cheers Jase. i've not owned a Jap jazz for a few years so i can't really say but the profile is deeper than a modern US standard & seems a bit deeper than my old MIA 62 reissue jazz that i wish i hadn't sold 4 or 5 years ago. i have to say though i really like this bass.
Just trying to get some sort of idea, quite fancy the MIM 60's....does it have the plain finish on the back of the neck or do they have the stripe? Are they the same sort of weight as a US? Cheers!
  12.
Jase, no pics yet but will post as soon as I take some.
Yeahhh, can't beat a bit of gear porn :brow:
  13. Wow, wasn't expecting that mate, what's the sparkly blue fretless?
  14.
Never really got on with Fender basses at all. Every time I've tried one it just hasn't seem to to deliver what I was looking for at the time. Not the right sound, not the right look - for many here that might seem like a trivial thing but for me looks are of equal importance to sound and playability. Fenders and P-Basses in particular are just too mainstream for me - I'm looking for just that little bit extra. For a lot of what I do the top end access isn't easy enough and for some reason on me they hang in such a way to make the first fret a bit of a stretch - I have no idea why this is, for a long time my main bass was a monstrous sized Overwater 36" scale, but that was never as awkward to reach to first fret as the Fenders were. Plus in the late 70s when I was helping out in my local musical instrument shop they had just started stocking quality instruments instead of Columbus and Grant copies. Compared with the wonderful Ibanez and Aria instruments we were unpacking, at least 3/4 of the Fenders had serious quality control problems, not to mention finishes that just looked disgusting (sh*t brown and a nasty see-through white that looked as though the sprayers hadn't put enough colour coats on the instruments and usually revealed seriously ugly wood grain). Fender basses - not for me.
Hi BigredX...so what you using at the mo
  15. Lovely basses artisan, when you say "slightly deeper than a modern jazz" are you talking profile, would you say as chunky as a Jap 60's?
  16. Agree with you on the new Fenders not really needing any mods, kept mine stock too!
  17. If you've found you love bass....keep your Squier.....got any pics?
  18.
Yes, I disagree with that statement. It won't work for every vibe.
Nah, it won't but then you just get a Jazz
  19.
nope, they are indeed huge ! actually you might be hard-pressed to use the top of the pickup as anchor..
Yeah, that's what I was thinking.

    Level Frets
Actually the bass on Ebay has what is commonly referred to (in the us) as fret lines or markers, as in fretless with markers. Warmoth, USA guitars etc all make aftermarket necks like. Having frets leveled is done to ensure there are no high or low spots, usually done after a refret MM
You're quite correct there mate. Maybe I didn't read the thing about Percy Jones........almost positive though, that a fretless player leveled the frets right down....mind you I could be miles out and talking utter rubbish....has been known
  21. Why is it called the Pink note?.....Just wondering
  22.
Golly. That is smart.
I know...very smart...I need it!
