1.
I enjoy the drums alot more than what the bass is doing, which is just plain same old same old, although the riffs are just amazing.
It goes without saying those type of bands have some great players. Ta for the link
2.
Indeed, LOG.. Your better off listening from "Ruin" upwards, also 2:40-2:44 on Ruin is just amazing.
...well that's just upset me for the rest of the day....very stressful....seriously though, see what I mean...some of it is so feckin hard to play!
3.
I regard them as "Nu-Thrash", they are probally one of the most interesting metal bands around today and are just amazing live.
I shall nip over to myspace and have a listen...they do have a page don't they?
4.
Agreed. I've been playing on and off for 25 years and in that time I've either owned or played pretty much everything from Jaydee to Status, through Gibson and Ric and more recently Sandberg and Alembic, and I always come back to the Fender Jazz. Every time. I mean look at them! They're big and solidly built, have the most graceful curves (still being copied to this day,) if the urge takes you, you can customise them to suit your preferences, they suit EVERY kind of music - looks and tone, they play beautifully, balance well and do exactly what it says on the tin - no messing, no faffing - affordable, well made, well designed, non pretentious basses. I love Fender!!
YEAHHHHHHH, i LOVE THE CURVES TOO!!!
5. Or.....those of us with a myspace page, get added and rip into his limited blues approach (there's much better blues players out there) ...ask him why he has four strings on his 57 when all he needs is one or two....OR....we could just invite him here, cos he's so full of bass knowledge
6. Go to one of his gigs and give him a live review.
7.
i prefer to play more technical stuff like lamb of god, Ive never tried any maiden or sabbath...
Lamb of God??? Don't know them at all.
8.
lol I'm the other way... i prefer to play metal than to listen to it, well... i have to be in the right mood.
Some of it is so feckin hard to play...I always have trouble with the Maiden covers I do, Running Free and The Trooper the sweat is on when the singer introduces them Now Geezer..he's a much more approachable bass player and while I'm on the subject of bass parts that freak me out, Seek and Destroy...... there's some naughty bits in there too!!
9.
Innate conservatism of bassists and the fear of going outside the comfort zone of a familiar body shape. Fenders are far too expensive for mass-produced lumps of wood with strings on, so the timorous bassist goes for something that looks the same but is better value for money. Let's face it, people who play P-basses and J-basses really just want to return to the womb.
Most basses are too expensive, ridiculous some of the prices out there. Some guys play cheap copies and sound awesome, doesn't really matter what a player uses at the end of the day. I will admit though, I can't use any other shape, has to be J or P design, used them for ages, seems a little daft to change my playing position/style etc....and your're right, I hate change but there's nowt wrong with having a comfort zone of a familiar body shape, it's highly reliable when playing live.
10.
I expressed an interest in trying out for a local function band, not really my sort of thing but I figured it would be regular live work and little 'management' responsibility for a change. The band leader sent me their playlist, 64 songs, all classics I suppose (in an MOR way), but all new to me from a playing point of view. I'm going to have to pass on this opportunity, but feel like I should be using this list to get these songs under my belt for the future. The trouble is, how much of an idiot am I going to feel sitting there learning Lady In Red, Black Velvet and suchlike? I think I've hit a critical point in my life, where the musical 'integrity' of my youth is now exactly balanced by my being nearly 40 years old. I'm getting so old that I just want to get out and play anything at any opportunity, but I'm not so old that I'll play any old rubbish. What do you reckon? Would you learn a load of songs that aren't your style at all to get work? Have you ever played exactly the sort of music that you really love in any case, or is it always a compromise? Should I stop navel-gazing and just play the bloody thing until my fingers bleed?
Idiot? cos you're learning Lady in Red or Black Velvet? Nah, I don't think so, I'd give a function band a blast, just to get paid. I don't enjoy the majority of stuff I do with my covers band, but what the hell, use your instrument to get paid....better than sitting on your butt without work and the advantage of extra cash is good for original projects. I'm forty soon and like you need to get out and play but it's always been that way for me....I'll play most things me as long as I'm out doing my thing on bass and getting paid of course. Life is too short...get out and play I reckon cos if you don't someone else will. Not personal to you Galilee mate, just speaking generally.
11. That is........so wrong
12. Tort is the future!
13.
A pity there's no maple board, no S1 switching & that they still have the thin tin bridge (but I suppose the 70's ones had the same kind!) Nice looking things, but I'm thinking that Fender are going to have to invent a modern bass sooner or later, as opposed to relying on the same four model lines forever.
I dunno, things are looking much better these days, best way for Fender to go I reckon, stick to what they know, a simple straight forward bass. Whether it's a J or P, can't go wrong, reliable, generally a good price for what they are. I'd rather have a Fender taking a bashing that a one off custom being gigged to hell and back...what I'm trying to say is you can wear a Fender out and just get another, it would be pretty gutting to abuse a custom one off, being able to replace it would be a nightmare I imagine. IMO of course
14. Just been flicking through a price guide from Vintage Guitar Mag, just to see what my three are worth........not a lot really. 2 US Jazz 2000-present $625 - $775 1 CIJ 60's Jazz 2001- present $700 - $750. Not a bad book actually, plenty of makes listed. Price Guide 2008 by Alan Greenwood and Gil Hembree. Haven't got a link for it, borrowed it from a mate It did mention though that certain custom and hand built instruments can have a huge value.
15. Posh porn, looks great!
16. Yet another top bit of porn.....third Fender this morning, what a way to start the day!
17. The Dogs
18. Tort guard? It'll look the business Lovely bass!
19. Things just get better and better, more Fender, more Fender!!
20. Good on ya mate!
21. There's metal in everyone I reckon I used to play some metal, still play a bit now with a covers band but much rather listen to it than play it. I'm an early sort of metal fan, Maiden, Sabbath, etc...that's a bit light weight though, compared to what's on the menu these days
22.
Hi mate, At first I thought you wanted to spend some money on the 'mods' of basschat, in which case I was going to suggest you should keep your money well away!! My advice would be to spend a bit of cash having a proper setup done on the bass (if you are not confident to do this yourself or if you don't live near another basschatter who is) and see how that changes things. It might change your opinion of the basses potential, for better or for worse. Cheers ped
Tidy advice!!!
23. The project idea sounds good to me too.
24.
I agree. Why remove it? There was no positives from taking it away.
It had to go, back to the original VVT I reckon, also reckon they should use either reverse machine heads too or at least the open gear type. Wasn't the S1 supposed to have a P bass like tone? Buy a P Bass I say....still, although I have an S1, have to say it's a great bass, love to try the new standard though
