    6 ohm cab

    Look for an amp that puts out between 200 and 1000 Watts into 4 Ohms. I know that looks like a huge jump from 200 to 1000, but believe me, it won't make much difference in the real world. You'll get about 90% of that into a 6 Ohm load, and your amp will run cooler. Other than that, look for an amp that's got the features you want. A

That should give you a good 'cut through' tone, but that still sounds meaty. It'll also go easier on your cabs too, as you're less likely to push the cones into over excursion. A

Most amps have the cut out on the FX [b]return[/b] jack, so that anything plugged into the return removes the preamp from the equation. The BFM website reckons it can be built with or without a tweeter for bass use. Bear in mind that the 3-way crossover will be cutting some of the higher end of what the midrange driver is capable of producing, so a post crossover tweeter switch will make the rig sound duller than one without a tweeter.   13. Well, I've finally come to the conclusion that I am not now, nor will I ever be, a guitarist. With that in mind, it's time to sell this guitar. It's a Tanglewood TW28SNQ dreadnought acoustic, and comes with a TGI padded gig bag. It's got a spruce top, mahogany neck (and presumably sides and back too, but I can't be sure), rosewood board. It's in really good condition apart from a couple of little marks on the fingerboard (which will probably buff out with lemon oil), a tiny ding on the rear bout (about 3mm long) and a bit of wear at the end of the headstock. We found that these frequency bands are where the majority of the 'recognition' of the tone comes from. Obviously, that's not all there is to it (rhythm and lead guitar go from about 100Hz up to 5kHz or even higher, vocals range from maybe 200Hz with overtones and breath sounds all the way up to about 10kHz etc.), but the [b]bulk[/b] of the tone comes from these bands. Interestingly, we also found that for most bass players, even when slapping and popping, there's nothing really useful going on above 5kHz. The Marcus Miller kind of brightness goes up to around 7-8kHz, but how many people need that? It does make me wonder why so many amp makers fit tweeters that go all the way up to 20kHz when that top octave is [b]totally[/b] unnecessary, and the top 2 octaves are pointless in the vast majority of cases. It's something Alex Claber and I agree on - a good midrange driver should give you all the top end you'll ever need. A

The trick is to find a bit of sonic real estate that nobody else in the band is using. Sub 50Hz and you're all over the bass drum. 200-1kHz is where the rhythm guitar sits. Vocals fit in between 500Hz and 2kHz. Lead guitar fuzz takes up the space from 2-5kHz, and anything above that is string noise and cymbals. That gives us 2 octaves between 50 and 200Hz to fit the majority of our tone in. It amazes me how many bass players (and sound engineers for that matter) have no idea how to fit things into a mix. A

J.[/quote] Unlike plywood though, all the laminates go in the same direction. It allows cheaper slab sawn timber to be used instead of more stable (but much more expensive) quarter sawn wood. It is pretty effective too - the same approach was used on the Kubicki Factor basses, and they hardly qualify as cheap crap! A

  25. Owing to a spot of skintness, and a lack of space, I'm having to get rid of this beastie. What can I tell you? It's a USA made amp, with bright and punch boost switches, 9-band graphic plus high and low shelving controls. There's a variable crossover, which also affects the on-board chorus effect (works really well actually, loads of swirly chorus sounds but maintaining the clean low end). The chorus is footswitchable with a standard T/S jack. 160 Watts into 4 Ohms, which happily is the impedance of the internal Scorpion speaker, this goes PLENTY loud enough to cut it at a gig. Dimensions are 650 wide x 670 high x 330 deep, weight is 36 kg. It's been fitted with a pair of folding side handles, as well as the original top strap handle, so it's not too bad to move. Cosmetically it's not too bad, there's a few scuffs and scrapes to the tolex and the corners have some damage, but there's nothing you wouldn't expect on an amp of this age.
