1.
I've got an imperial Allen key set and I don't think I've ever used it. All hex bolts I've ever met seem to be metric ( not sure about US Fenders though, but my MIJ is metric ).
Music Man bridge saddles are 1/16" hex. CB
2. I did own a StingRay for a while in the late 80s. Prefer the feel of the Bongo in every way. But that's not to say I don't like StingRays. I do. Just I'm starting to think the Bongo is a bit of a well kept secret. CB
3. I never really saw a problem with the looks. There are probably a lot of folk who haven't actually seen a Bongo in the flesh. I hadn't until mine arrived. They are actually quite small. What is it about the neck that folk don't like? I've small hands and am used to a 74 Jazz with a stick insect's manhood for a neck and I find the Bongo just fine. I'd been a bit concerned about a satin finish but was pleased to find it nice and shiny. CB
4. Can't put it down mate. Really. That's got to be a good thing. CB
5.
For me, Graceland is all about the tiny details. When Paul sings "The bomb in the baby carriage was wired to the radio" on the record, he gives it a lovely melody that lifts at the end and really locks in with the sudden drive of the bassline into the chorus. It is a moment of true genius in a small detail that has a huge impact on the song.
For me it's the emphasis in 'Graceland' itself that he gives the last T in heartT - "Losing love is like a window in your hearT..." You got it Chris, it's the little things. CB
6.
I've got about another 3 and a half month wait for mine!
How come? CB
7. Is it not 35 years too late for a punk band? CB
8.
Pics!
Here you go :-) CB
9. Watching that video - I'm thinking possibly his D string is out of tune. And that bass would scare small children. What is that all about? CB

11.
I really enjoyed the program and wish I'd recorded it for further viewing. Not just the music, although that was great and well covered, but the politics and cheap tricks in the US and also the delight of the band going to London and New York especially when they asked where they could get a permit so that they could walk in Central Park!
As Doctor J mentioned, Graceland was reissued last month and the deluxe edition of the CD also includes this documentary on DVD. CB

Bongo

Got my Bongo 4HH today. OMG. Structural reinforcements to house and furniture required. All other instruments packed up into their little cases and put into the toy cupboard. Bless them. OMG. CB
13. Never has it seemed more appropriate to say "this post is useless without pictures" :-) CB
14.
Joni Mitchell also likened bass as 'that horrible brick wall in my music' (with the exception of Jaco and Larry klein)
Daft bint.
15. I bought Mike's Bongo HH. What a lovely instrument. You can be 100% confident that Mike is a great bloke to deal with. Mike's communications were spot on - even supplying a tracking number that actually worked! My first ever. Bass arrived next day delivery, very well packed. Even after the transaction was complete, Mike went the extra mile (without me asking) and found the key for the case and dropped it in the post for me. Many thanks Mike. Keep in touch and we'll get a beer sometime (unless this Bongo causes structural damage to my house). Regds, Gary.
16. Well worth watching for the beautiful tone and rhythm of Bakithi Khumalo. CB
17. If you can afford it... then I reckon there are worse things you can do to feed the retail addition than buying bass guitars. Buying most things loses you money as they aren't resalable or else depreciate. Not buying anything will make you anxious and will lose you money at Rate of Inflation minus Interest on Savings. Which effectively means losing money at the Rate of Inflation :-/ Buy a bass and it'll probably appreciate in value AND you get to enjoy it at the same time. Try that with a Ferrari or an Ulster Bank savings account. One of these is difficult to get into, will make your money disappear and cause your friends to laugh at you. And the other is a Ferrari. Make that move. Buy that bass. CB PS: I'm selling my precision on here :-)

19. Have decided to sell my 1951 Reissue P-Bass to make way for a Bongo that I've just bought from another forum member along with a desire to try as many instruments as I can whilst holding on to my 74 Jazz as my only 'keeper' for now (since I've always had it and couldn't envisage life without it). Excellent condition - no dents or dings. Its an earlier 'Made In Japan' (as opposed to 'Crafted In Japan') model. I think it's about 1994 or thereabouts. Blonde slab body. Black single-ply scratchplate. Vintage reverse tuners. It has a Seymour Duncan SCPB-3 Quarter Pound 'Basslines' pickup. And a Fender deluxe 4 saddle bridge with threaded saddles which was a direct bolt in replacement. I'll include the original pickup, the original 2-saddle bridge and a Fender gig-bag. This is a great instrument for reproducing those Motown and disco grooves - great playability and feel, nice action and a super powerful early Precision tone. For sale at £575 including postage. Would consider a trade for a Steinberger XL-2 or StingRay Unlined Fretless, obviously with cash going your way. 20. OK - thanks for that. Had started to look at the Mono M80 and the new Mono Vertigo. The Ritter RG8000 looks pretty good. Thanks for your help - much appreciated. CB
21. Many thanks for the replies folks. In response to BigRedX who makes a valid point - I use the gig bag as follows: - 10 min walk from home to train (on my back) - 10 min train journey - 10 min walk from train to recording studio and - in the boot of my Mini So I'm looking for a case that is: - soft - light - has room for a cable, one pedal and some odds and ends - I travel fairly light - well padded (Fender deluxe gig bag is not well padded - especially at the heel) - comfortable to wear (Fender gig bag is very uncomfortable) - not too bulky (Fender gig bag is shaped to be easily manufactured and is too bulky and unfitted and generic) - good quality (This is the Fender case's worse area. The 'deluxe' gig bag feels very cheap and very very nasty) Will take a look at some of the brands you guys have mentioned. CB
22. Just wondering if anyone has any up-to-date recommendations re gig-bags. The Fender 'deluxe' bags I have are not great at all. I did read the sticky which seemed to recommend Ritter - just wondering if that still holds true nowadays. Ta, CB
23. Well.....after saying how much I hated the look of the 51 RI in butterscotch blonde, just tonight I added the pickup and bridge covers (the correct way around I hasten to add) and what a difference they make! £30 has transformed it from something pug-ugly into a really handsome instrument. I think it's not the colour that's the problem - just the fact that there is too much of it without the ashtrays. Possibly a bit of sub-conscious conditioning going on too, after years of seeing pics of original precisions. CB
