2.
The bloke 2nd from bottom on here http://www.fender.co...pic.php?p=59965 seems to know the in's and out's on Fender's use of the skunk stripe.
I read it and I'm not buying his story :-) My experience was mostly of instruments from '74 to about '82 and in that period the numerous Fender Ps and Js that I was in direct contact with did not have the stripe if they had a rosewood fretboard. Sid Vicious' mid 70s precision would be an example. CB PS: Just noticed this thread is starting to live up to its title. :-) :-)

4. Ref stripe - I've no knowledge of what goes on with various copies. But back in the days of just Fender P's and J's, all the ones with rosewood boards were stripeless. CB
5.
Lack of skunk stripe...
Not making any comment on what this bass is or isn't....but I thought that you only tended to get the skunk stripe with maple fingerboards, as it was necessary to cut a channel in the back of the neck to install the truss rod, whereas with rosewood, the fretboard would be lifted to install the rod. 7. It would be much appreciated if you could add Basschat to the Tapatalk network. I use this for the EBMM forum and TalkBass - much more convenient than the site's native mobile version. Tapatalk supports the IP Forum framework which BC is based on. All it takes is to enable the plugin and add BC to the Tapatalk network. http://tapatalk.com/activate_tapatalk.php?plugin=ipb Thanks in advance. CB
8. Had it not been for the fretlines, I'd have been very interested. Lovely looking instrument. Good luck with the sale. CB
9. Now I'm no psychologist but it seems probable that getting hit by the lorry left Mark with some unwanted grooves in his nuts and he is taking it out on the guitars. In all seriousness though, poor chap - getting hit by a lorry is no joke so perhaps we should cut him some slack. I have a friend (John the Yawn) who got hit by a lorry and it left him with that disease where you fall asleep at the drop of a hat. Coincidentally, I think he is also now sh*t at luthiery. CB
10. You are right - it does explain a lot. Whilst working as a commercial helicopter pilot I have learned a lot about microlight pilots. Never mind lorries - many of them were lucky to escape being hit by helicopter. They don't seem to realise that if they don't speak on the radio, flight information service can't relay their presence to the rest of us. And if they don't use a transponder, they don't appear on our TCAS. The guitar stuff does not surprise me. But you have to wonder is such a serial meddler can resist the temptation to tinker with his aircraft. Shudder. CB
11. Ahem... http://www.blogger.com/profile/17022429530833375584 Love what he's written to round off his "favourite music"... CB
12. Just to be fair to Birdsong and follow up. The chaps on the Talkbass forum told me that this would be out of character for Scott at Birdsong, that his computer had been down and to try again. What do you know - he has responded and seems like a really helpful and clued in guy. :-) I now need to decide to continue on my quest for a fretless Ray or go off-piste and try an Embrace. CB
13. Looks like he's cheating by using a pint-sized Precision! :-)
14. Well I emailed Birdsong a week ago asking to purchase an Embrace fretless - and what response did I get? None. Seems the good ol USofA hasn't been hit by the recession. CB
15. Many thanks Andy for buying my 51 RI Precision. I hope you have a long relationship with it. Pleased you like it so much. And thanks for taking the trouble to come from Scotland to visit my place in Northern Ireland too! Was lovely to meet you and Folks - Andy is a great laid-back guy to deal with. Do so with confidence. CB
16. Cheers - saw that one but I think the fretless Embrace model is new and very different. Thanks anyway. CB
17. Quick question. Does anyone know what these sound like yet? Ta. CB
18. Check out her 50 Words For Snow album. A real grower. Have a feeling that it was on one of her single sleeves back in the day (perhaps Babooshka) that I first noticed a Jazz with dots rather than blocks, and as a boy (with my 74 Jazz of course) it got me ever so confused. CB
19. Might we respectfully suggest that he starts to use this photo in his eBay ads. CB
20. What aspects of the instruments do you want to have a comparative view on? You need to help us out by narrowing the question a bit :-) CB
21. Pino = OC-2 10 o'c, 12o'c, 2 o'c If I remember correctly. I used to play this in the 80s an that was a long time ago. CB
22. @MM20 - it's an unlined I'd be looking for. And 3 band eq. And bloody hell 9 months? I've seen a civil servant sign a form quicker! CB
23. I'm thinking of ordering a new fretless StingRay. Will go for 4H without piezo. Wondering what the current colour options are and if there are any current special editions available to order? Right now I'm swaying towards the same colour as my Bongo which would be Sapphire Black with matching headstock and pearloid scratch plate. Wondering also if any of you know how long it will take and perhaps recommend one of the Glasgow shops to order through. Thanks, CB
24. I've a question. I was going to buy a s/h fretless StingRay. However, it looks like the action at the nut is very low. The strings are making sizeable grooves on the headstock side. And on the fretboard side, some if not all strings touch the fretboard at the nut groove exit. Question - is this normal? The seller had mentioned about the fretboard being levelled in the last few years, so right now I'm thinking a new instrument would be a better way to go for peace of mind. Thanks, CB
25. Welcome to the forum. :-) CB
