1.
Your slap sound must be really naff then.
Not at all. Why must it be 'really naff' just because I don't change anything?
  2.
On a side note / thread hijack sort of thing.......... Do you leave all the amp settings and the likes the same as for regular finger plucking or do you crank the gain or anything up?
I never change anything other than the technique.

    Theatre Show Maybe?
To be fair, the opposite can be true. I've done lots of shows where i've had the pad weeks in advance. Pro and Am Dram. I'm going on Tour in April with a pro show and i'm getting the pad next week!
You've been very lucky then if you get them weeks in advance. Literally every show I've done, I've not seen the pad until the first band call.
  4. I would just like to say that I would happily put my Ashdown MiBass rig up against anything and defy anyone to say anything negative about it.
  5. I learned some chordal stuff and soloing ideas, amongst other things, from Janek Gwizdala and some right hand technique and technical ideas (and different soloing ideas) from Bryan Beller. Literally
  6.
There is NO tablature in my books as learning tab is a superfluous skill. It was actually brought into public awareness in the 80’s by guitar magazines and music book publishers with only one aim in mind- to make more sales! You will never use or be given tab in a professional scenario- never. It has also dumbed down most up and coming rock players because it takes the onus off of developing your ears. I recently saw a post on a popular bass forum where some guy said, “Urgent- need tabs for Jumpin’ Jack Flash as I have a gig at the end of the week where I’ll have to play that.” These are sad times when the average guy doesn’t want to take the time to figure out simple tunes out by ear. All the Bass Joe
Thanks Joe....I've been saying this for ages.
  7.
I managed to get there unscathed however almost stuffed the car on the A53 between Leek and Buxton trying to avoid a quarry truck that stopped sharply in front of me. I managed to slide round it and up on a snowy verge. Very scary!
I live in Leek..it always gets a bit hairy on that road, especially when the weather gets bad. Glad the course was good though.

    Theatre Show Maybe?

What Lowdown said is bang on. I've done a load of shows (not Grease though),and I've never been given the pad before the first band call.In fact,my first show was depping for my then-teacher so I didn't even have the luxury of a rehearsal..it was straight in at the deep end. Getting and learning the CD may help, but remember that there is every likely hood that things will change (cut from bar 112 to 124 etc.) so you can't rely too much on that approach. With regards to emailing the MD,I can only say that every show that I've done has been through recommendation. The MD will probably have a list of players that they regularly use and an unsolicited email (I'd prefer a phone call) may get you on the bottom of that list, but don't count on it-especially as the only experience you have is nearly doing a show at uni. If you want to get into this line of work,I think that you'd be better off finding the players who are doing this work and taking some lessons. You'll improve your reading and they may put you forward for deps where you will (hopefully) be able to prove yourself. A recommendation is a million times better than an unsolicited email.
  9. I love gear and have got a lot of it (recently I've been buying a lot of effects),but it's not anything to lose sleep over.If I start thinking about gear while I'm in bed,it will usually send me to sleep. Thinking about music, however, can keep me up for hours....especially thinking about something that I can't play yet. Gear is great, but like SteveK says, spend the money on lessons and you may find (probably will) that the gear isn't the problem. Let's be honest, you can swap and change gear all day but how much difference does it really make?
  10.
Do you think at nearly 52yo I could be capable of reading music again?
Yes.
  11.
I read a lot of threads on here and there's a lot of chat about finding "your sound". I don't have one. Am I ok?
I reckon you do have a sound. If I was to play your bass through your rig,it won't sound the same as when you play. It would be the same if you played my stuff. It all starts with your hands.
  12. I'm not one of those players that wants to be 'felt'-I want to be heard. I've been to a lot of gigs where the soundguy has put way too much low end in the mix and the bass becomes muddy and indistinct. I don't like,or want,that-I want my notes to be clear and defined. Of course,I want the bass but not at the expense of clarity.
  13. I'd go for the Warwick. I picked up my Streamer LX5 for under £500 and it's done every gig I've done since.
  14.
My thoughts would be that you aren't in need of an effect for this. It would be better to develop bass lines that support the song and fill any holes your guitarist can't cover (if indeed the holes need filling - sometimes less is more).
I'd go with this. I've found that adding any kind of effect to your bass sound works better in situations where you have either that second guitar player or keys player.
  15. Yeah she's cool (although I have no interest in Youtube playalongs),but I do agree with the whole female thing. As an example, check out the number of views of her videos (and the girl playing Mayer), and compare that to the views on the majority of Uriah Duffy's videos (I thought of him because of the other thread). Sure,he has a couple with high views-mostly gear demos-but for the most part the young girls videos are getting higher views. To be fair,it's probably a combination of the fact that they are female (see the comments) and the fact that they are playing cover songs (which is why someone like DavidSinRocks (?) gets lots of views).
  16. http://youtu.be/C7qCaCcfjXg http://youtu.be/vgiDcJi534Y The difference between a player like Marcus and a player like Wooten is the fact that Marcus spent a decade as one of the top NY studio guys playing everything from jingles to film/tv scores to major pop hits, and it shows in his playing.

    Fieldy
dunno who he is >.< gimme a clue and i shall check him out
Korn.
  19.
It'd be slightly off if he didn't, considering he's accused Tom Chapman who replaced him in New Order, of miming to tapes of his (Hook's) bass lines.
Didn't he have another bass player in Monaco, and only play himself when he wasn't singing?
  20. I really like that Thumb and the Star Bass. The Triumph is tempting too.
  21. It depends what you call major? I know guys (my Dad for one) that did over 150 gigs last year in (on average) 2000 seat venues and theatres, selling out pretty much every one....that seems pretty major to me. I did around 250 gigs last year-that's quite a lot. Obviously if they are only counting arenas then the rest are relatively insignificant, I suppose.
  22.
What a great argument between the "technicians" and the "musicians". Personally I find technical displays boring after about 10 seconds. Good music I'll listen to all day. I suspect that Hooky will be delivering some great anecdotes and some good "music"
This suggests that the people who are not in favour of Hook ( clearly, mainly me and Pete, in this thread) are more about technique than music...which is clearly crap and has nothing to do with the discussion.I don't believe that anyone mentioned technique. As a bass player and musician,Hook does what he does, and I don't think that that is enough to hold a 'masterclass' at a bass show.I'm sure he has good stories about his bands and how they worked together though. I find it interesting that in the threads about guys like Wooten, Marcus, Jaco etc. people are quick to shout words like 'w***ing', 'boring','souless' and 'muso' (whatever that means), yet when someone says something negative about a popular band player they are dismissed as 'arrogant' and being more about technique than music.
  23.
"yeah, but apart from create whole genres, writing some of the most distinctive and best selling singles of all time and having a career that's lasted 30 years what can he possibly have to teach me about music??? "
I think things are getting mixed up here.....He may have had a long career by playing in a couple of successful bands, but I can pretty much guarantee that there are players on this forum who know a lot more about 'music'.By his own admission,he doesn't know much about it. Could he tell some interesting stories about being in his bands, and how they went about things? Yes. Could he teach anyone about music? Probably not....and that's not being arrogant.
  24. I've not tried the Ring Thing but I recently bought a Way Huge Ringworm. It's a cool pedal-it's got a lot of options and sounds...I just need to find a place to use it now. I already had a Sinister Analogue Ramrod which is a lot simpler but still makes some great sounds. I like Ring Modulators, especially listening to how guys like Tim Lefebvre use them (he uses the Dod Gonkulator and more recently the EHX Frequency Anslyser)
  25.
. Furthermore the Aphex review says the pedal is 'labelled for Acoustic Guitar/Bass/Electric Guitar' but a quick look at the picture reveal the words 'Voiced Especially For Basses'.
I think the photo showed the old style Xciter-the newer ones look totally different. I don't normally say things about the magazine, but the Fender/Lull mix up is pretty inexcusable.....although I was more concerned that Mike Keneally was only referenced as a 'singer-songwriter' and that the Bryan Beller article didn't go deeper into their work together.
