Cover Versions You Knew Long Before the Original

Girls Just Wanna have fun - original version by Robert Hazard Robert Hazard - Girls Just Wanna Have Fun - YouTube Rivers of Bablyon - 10 minutes ago, I heard the version by the Melodians The Melodians - "Rivers Of Babylon" (Official Audio) - YouTube Great thread - an opportunity for basschatters to share obscure 78s that they have in their collection! -
I have been asked to advise a friend who is setting up an old-school Jam Room in the basement of his house. He has asked for advice on which bass amp to buy, along with a bass guitar for when a bassist turns up without the necessary kit. I have also been asked for advice on a vocal mic and the necessary amplification - like I said, he wanted to set it up like he remembered from 40 years ago, when he was in a punk band. Old School - so, one amp for each instrument, and a single vocal amp. As for budget, I have not been given one, nor do I yet know the size of the room, or what other amps will be in place. However, I do know that a small drum kit will soon arrive. I am thinking a Sire bass (because basschatters seem to like them), and an Ashdown Electric Blue EB 12-180 (because I have used one), and a 20 foot cable. For the vocals, an SM58 into a floor monitor? Does anyone have any advice? As I typed this out, I realise that it is hard to advise on kit, when we don't know budgets, room size, and existing kit.

Do we have any volunteers to break this news to Suzi Quattro?

I have a green Washburn XB500. Until about 2 years ago, they would appear on eBay regularly, for less than £200. Now, nothing. A BC post on the safe removal of control pots from an XB500

On Monday, I played at church in the most difficult service that I can imagine. We recorded four songs for my own mother's funeral ceremony. I am pleased with the results, and am happy to share them with the congregation on the day - we were able to personalise some of the songs, by selecting verses that were more relevant to my mum. That makes them all the more powerful. So far, everyone who listened to the recordings has cried. Me included.

A few from me: 1. Bill Drummond, Hip Hop, Rap, country music star Tammy Wynette, and an ice cream van. The KLF feat. Tammy Wynette - justified and ancient (Stand by the Jams 12'' Mix) [1991] - YouTube 2. Run DMC and Aerosmith - Rap and Rock! RUN DMC - Walk This Way (Official HD Video) ft. Aerosmith - YouTube 3. I was surprised to see Chas and Dave on stage with Albert Lee (and Eric Clapton in the audience, who played a few songs later in the set). However, that was more due to my ignorance of Chas and Dave's musicianship and their wide-ranging influence. Albert Lee - Country Boy - YouTube 4. I suppose that, at the time, it would have been a surprise to hear country picker and rock & roller Buddy Holly choosing to work with a string orchestra Buddy Holly- True Love Ways ( with 10 second studio intro ) - YouTube

If anyone sees a white TKS112 for sale... it's pinched.

It does happen - I sold a pair of AR18s Hifi speakers, which my grandson genuinely knocked over and damaged while the auction was running! I had to check my photos to see if the damage was originally there, until my wife told me what I had happened. I offered a refund, or a discount, but the buyer was happy to go ahead with the purchase, which was for a refurbishment project. I felt very embarrassed. -
Yes, a cold church, rapidly heated, really seems to mess with the tuning of a bass guitar.

And also, the Average Bar Band. What about the Dixie Chicks all-transvestite band - Chicks with Dixie. The really good ones tell you who they tribute , tell you that they are not the original band,, and make you laugh too: Fake That Deft Leppard From Newcastle, The Reet Hot Chilli Peppers The Rolling Clones Oasish

Carlos, you came for advice on buying a new bass for £600, and ended up with a sponge, and your old bass, and £600 in change. Surely that is the last time that Basschat will save you from spending money! All the best on your bass journey - all the above advice is good.

Great news!! We have "watched worship" - the band plays and sings, the congregation sway / clap along / cry / jump around. No singing allowed - and nor do we expect it to happen until perhaps next year. I don't much like it - it feels too much like a performance. with too much focus on the band, and how well we play. That said, it has improved my chops massively. However, this means that the skill gap between the "improver" bands, and the regular band is increasing week by week. I am wondering what I can do to help.

To my surprise, I rather liked that! I thought that I would prefer a funky, or melodic line. However, the driving and unfussy bassline really supported the song, and showed me the value of a strong sense of rhythm. Thank for sharing.

A Reverse Kit - you buy it complete, then take it apart before putting back in a box and having it taken away by the driver in a big truck (the bin-man).

Fixed tempo and repetitive rhythm. Can you do better ?

Hellzero, apologies for my misplaced quip. I had not intended to derail your thread, nor to offend you. I hope that you can accept my apology. -

Is it bluegrass? Yee-haa. Gold Prospector's dance. -
Was Not Was, when they were supporting Dire Straits. My dad was chuffed to have got us seats 5 rows from the front, looking into the stage-left bass enclosure, until the Was-sers (Wassocks?) started their tuneless barrage of funk playing. Awful. From that moment on, I took earplugs to gigs. However, on that day, I needed to use my own fingers.

I voted, for the first time. I very much enjoyed the music, and was impressed that basschatters have so much skill and imagination. -
When 5-string basses suddenly make a lot of sense...
bass_dinger replied to mcnach's topic in General Discussion
D, and G - the keys of worship (at least, they are in my church). And C is the key of ukulele. I started my bass journey with a 5 string - I did not want to think of the bass as a thick-stringed guitar, and wanted to treat the bass as a totally new (to me) instrument. However, I tended not to use the B string much. That's because the basslines that I was learning were from the 60s and 70s, and did not use the B string. It was also because the B string was a bit flappy, and did not encourage me to play across the neck. However, a new set of strings and better awareness of the fretboard, now allow me to use the B string for (say) the low E to G. On the few occasions that I tried it, I found it difficult to play a 4 string - all the notes are in the wrong place.
