  1. I give you Dancing in the Street - the Silent Music video. No music at all - "It's like two drunk mates making their way home from the pub. " Watch it and laugh. . . . Dancing in the Street -- Silent Music Video - YouTube.url
  2. Saddle Up and Ride Your Pony by David Christie It's cheesy, and he may even be miming to the bass line . . . However, I have managed to avoid it for 30 years, simply because the people who schedule radio playlists like it as much as I do . . . David Christie - Saddle Up (Official Music Video) - YouTube.url
  3. Two minutes? That's not even one song! Or is that the point that you are making - even one song would be too long!
  4. Burn the heretic 😄 I thought it better to burn the banjo, and have stern words with the heretic.
  5. Sadly, people take that to extremes, and turn up with no preparation at all, or without having sung through the songs, or even looked at the song list. Usually that's the singers, but I once had a bassist turn up without their bass.... Agreed! It's not a gig, it's an opportunity to serve others. Why do people treat it like they're doing the congregation a favour by tuning up on the day? Get excited people - it's important.
  6. If it's the right three people, you will do it justice! For those who don't know the first song, here: https://youtu.be/3glYEDzSyok?si=g50qLV_v34kOBKE0
  7. Anyone who has spent time in a church will realise that things which are big, bulky, musical and unwanted will end up there... Organ. Pianos. 4×12 bass cabs. Soprano singers.
  8. Mark King. Yakka takka takka tak. I have a CD in my car - The Best Dad Album in the world. One track is Dance the Night Away, by the Mavericks. Two chords, root-5th. The next track is Running in the Family by Level 42. Lots of notes. I prefer the first track, probably because I can understand the language of that song. I think that, when I listen to Mark King, Mohini Dey, Flea, I don't have the skill set to understand what they are doing. So to me, it's alien.
  9. Did he get a better offer from another church?
  10. We had such inconsistency with the sound team, that the Worship Leader came up with a solution that did not involve the sound guys. Channels that are sound activated, a second mixing desk on the stage (and later, personal mixing desks so we could each set our own monitor mix. Still waiting for the whole band to buy in-ears - I don't want to be the only one. However the leader is yet to send out advice to the whole band on what to look for, so if he isn't bothered, nor am I. I even shared a link with him, following a recommendation from basschat: "look at these. Highly recommended. Do you want to share it with the rest of the group?".
  11. I was that leaver. They took me back, I was grateful and happy to play. But I have managed my expectations of the band.... And they have understood the problems that caused me to walk. They've done nothing about the problems, but they have understood them....
  12. Agreed. She is hugely talented, technically brilliant - and my sister keeps sending me links to her stuff. But I just don't get what she does. And if she was the keynote speaker at next year's South East Bass Bash, I would be very embarrassed!
  13. I am big fan of "back covers" - take a song, and cover it in a style that predates the original song. Here, Gloria Jones Tainted Love in the style of Django Reinhardt. Is that what you are looking for?
  14. Isn't this the one that can has a descending bassline during the chorus, akin to that in Bach's Air on a G string? A, E/g#, F#m, A/e, D, A/c#, Bm, D/a, repeat...
  15. My cousin was in a punk band that did nothing and split up. The rhythm guitarist (Graham Jones) still wanted to play in a band so my cousin's then girlfriend introduced him her friend, Nick Heywood. They went on to form Haircut 100. As for me, I turned up to my ukulele night in a cafe, and someone had bought along their drummer friend (Charlie Grima out of Wizzard). He struggled to lock in with us ,- anyone who has ever played with a ukulele band will understand that the fault was with us! (That same cafe was where the Beatles had had a meal while shooting a video in nearby Knole Park, down the road from an antique shop where John Lennon found the poster advertising a performance from Mr Kite).
  16. Perhaps he had a B E A D G set, and tuned the B string to an E, E string to an A etc. "Step away from the bass, please, Sir. "
  17. To lose one string is unfortunate. To lose two strings is carelessness. And as for winding one on backwards, and managing to snap strings from a 130 set ....
  18. I have a rather nice Washburn XB925 gigging base in a case behind the sofa, which is a struggle to extract when I practice. So I use the Washburn XB500 which is sitting on the stand. Every time I play the XB925, I am reminded how much easier it is to play, and how much better I sound. But I can't be bothered to get behind the sofa....
  19. I'd be all over that, if it was a three-string....
  20. Thanks for the good advice on in-ears. I will probably share the recommendation with the leader. If he passes it on to the group, and if others buy the kit themselves, then I will too. However, if nobody makes a move to buy in ears, then I won't bother either. I still think that the church should contribute or supplement the purchase. But that's just me being grumpy
  21. How does that work? Do you all buy your own IEMs? Share them? Which brand do you use? I ask because we have been told that is the aim of the band at church - buy your own in ears, so we no longer need to use the monitors -the aim is to reduce stage volume. Predictably, people are confusing IEMs with the £10 earphones used with their phones, and nobody has made a move to buy even those. I am not sure that I want to buy in-ears - I would only need them for church, and feel that they should be supplied (or at least, funded). Otherwise, it feels like I am paying to play (having already invested in my instruments). Instead, I tried a set of big headphones on Sunday, just to show willing, and I could turn down the stage volume a lot. However, others didn't - monitors up too loud, guitar amps set to 'stun'. At one point, the leader said "just drums and bass!" and turned to us to say it. Unfortunately, this meant that he was off-mic, and I didn't hear him. However, I guessed what he was saying, but..... ....the congregation were not miced up, so I didn't know whether they were singing the chorus or the verse. So, a successful experiment, if only to show what could go wrong.
  22. I am intrigued, so I did a search, and found "Mickey Baker's Complete Course in Jazz Guitar". Would you recommend it to someone who wants to understand and play jazz guitar?
  23. Can you tell us more about the stubby little tuner, that is missing a footswitch? I am guessing that it is always on, and has no mute function.
  24. 3/3? Is that a time signature, or a typo?! As for "How deep the fathers love", being in 5/4 (and a few bars in 3/4), I had no idea, beyond knowing that it was odd to play.
