In fact, the DI was fine. I had plugged the bass into the return of the effects loop, and thus bypassed the DI. In my defence, the amp head was vertical rather than horizontal, to save space - and I was disoriented and used the wrong jack socket! I'll get my coat.... EDIT. Actually, it was me who moved the amp head onto its side..... so, my fault entirely, and laughably indefensible. I won't even try to blame someone else!!

About two years ago, I bought some kit from Thomann, including a passive DI box. At the time, I had no need for it - all of the amps that I used had a DI built in, and the venue that I played at had spare DI boxes. This morning the DI Out on the Ashdown wasn't working, so, I got to use my Thomann DI box. I was delighted that I had the necessary kit in my equipment case (or as I should call it, my Just In Case...). We also had to read music for one of the songs this morning. The music including chromatic runs of notes, and even a written E# - so, play an F when looking at an E on the stave.... The guitarist (Worship Leader) did an excellent job, working out the right inversions, and kept it rhythmically straight. Pianist was very good too. As for me, I surprised myself, and managed to play what was written - but I shan't be buying the live album of this morning's service! In other news, the vocalists wanted to change the key of one of the songs - G to E. Just as well I practice in other keys, rather than only the written or expected keys. And we had a different drummer, who seems to play more complicated and technical rhythms than I am used too - his proficiency is beyond my skill levels, but I enjoy learning how to lock in with him. All that took one hour of rehearsal. All in all, a recipe for disaster, but it worked out okay.

One has been to some sort of music college (and is a poor drummer but a good guitarist and keyboard player); the other has been playing by ear for 30-plus years (but can't tell the difference between 3/4 and 4/4). Perhaps they have a different understanding of music to me - to them it flows (especially when one does not listen to the other musicians nor follow the chord charts). To me, I want to know what I am playing - and indeed, what they are playing. I was recently asked to play at an Easter event with these same musicians. Four weeks to run through perhaps 20 songs. I decided not to. And for once, I don't mind! In other news, my dad is still in hospital from date of my original post. That remains my priority.

Spot on. That's my role. If they don't like that, or want someone who worships rather than plays, then they are free to get someone else in

An update. I am back in the band, but I have seen that the Emporer is not wearing any clothes. That is to say, the guitarist can't play with a drummer leading - which is why his model of leading is to get others to follow him. The other week, we played a song in 3/4. I asked the guitarist what time signature he was playing in - he did not know but he was "playing what was on the CD". In fact, he was playing in 4/4, but could not tell the difference. The Leader is still a poor drummer (but has recently got someone else in to take care of the tubs). The people from the choir still don't turn up to rehearsals. I met with the leaders, who wanted me to worry less about the playing the notes and focus more on worshipping. I am working out how to do that - but right now, my feeling is that if stop focusing on the notes, that won't work for me. There is some good news - other musicians are calling out the guitarist ("what chord are you playing for D/f#?" "I played F#m but can play any chord you wish " "So long as I know what chord you are playing - otherwise, I can't play it ") And the new drummer is good - good enough to play Master Blaster as a warm up exercise (and to smile when I joined in). As for me, I am learning not to mind, and won't be playing with certain musicians from now on - and I am looking for other bands, and learning the mandolin too.

Meet the new bass, same as the old bass. Won't get fooled again.

That would be frustrating - to have the money, but not be able to find the exact bass that you want, until after you have bought another bass. It's not happened to me - but I live in hope of being spoilt for choice in this way.

One of those alternatives is Gotoh - they are a respected brand, I think. Perhaps that is the option I should go for. Thanks @pete.young

My mandolin tuning buttons are falling apart. They fracture, and then fall off of the shaft. Superglue fixes them, but they now look ugly. The plastic is likely to be 40 or 50 years old - is this degradation a known thing? The tuner action is also variable - sometimes stiff, other times no connection between the cog and worm drive, when I loosen the string. But if those bits and pieces are not part of the signal chain, or are to repair or replace existing kit, or relate to other instruments, there may be a Case for the Defence - you may still be in for 2023!

You could make a little project of it - go and see a few of the tribute bands, and after each show, chat with your daughter and decide how well they nailed it. That will give her the opportunity to discern whether she prefers the show, or the musical accuracy.

The difference in sound between silicon and germanium diodes was astounding. Is that really the only difference - the diodes - or are other settings also changed?

For me, Crazy Little Thing Called Love. Made all the more fun when the rest of the church band know it, and have played it at an open air festival (to trick the audience into liking us...). Billie Jean is also fun, when the stick- swinger is warming up
