At the moment my favourite tone is from my Ashborys (with ashworth transducer). Of course the silicone rubber strings are what are really making the tone. I always mix in 50/50 magnetic & piezo on my NS CR5M

Which Bass player do you sound like ?
Jean-Luc Pickguard replied to lowdown's topic in General Discussion
It said I was Duck Dunn & Willie Dixon in equal measure. Actually it said the person that put the quiz together is an idiot - not in so many words, but the clues were there. -
Billy Sheehan hasn't played the same since he evicted all his body thetans.
If you get out of denmark st, take right towards Tottenham court road tube, there is a shop on your right with lots of second hand studio gear and guitar pedals on the window. I walked in there in the intention of buying a pod x3 or a tech 21 bass driver. The reason i went there was because they seemed to be the only ones who actually sell both of them. I approached the guy that was there, a tall skinny guy with long hair, seems around the end of his 40s, and asked him if i can try the pod next and the bass driver. him: "Why?" Me: " Im looking for a device that would enable me to record my bass direct to the computer" Him: " They are both very different " me: " I know, thats why i want to try them, see which one i prefer" him:(Angry tone): " there is no way you can compare them, they are too different " me: (getting angry) " I dont want to compare them, i want to hear which one i prefer" him: " we do not demonstrate gear here, if you want you can buy both of them" he then turned his back to me and started talking to the other "sales" person. Being a hot tempered middle eastern, he was kinda lucky that i was there with my girlfriend, it was probably the rudest addetude i've ever got since moving to london. Before i went to the shop i went to a cash point and took 300£ to buy one of these units. I left the shop empty handed and very very angry and bitter. Apart from the fact that he was a complete c**t, i really really wanted to hear the difference between a digital flashy unit like the pod, to a more hands on analog unit like the sans amp. I'm never going near that area again. Just to soften things up, i've ordered a new bass from Andertons over the phone 3 weeks ago, and they were very patient nice and friendly to me.
That'll be RockStop - The same bloke (I'm sure - looks like he's stuck in the 80s?) was very huffy when I tried out the behringer bass synth pedal but didn't buy it due to it having no useful sounds. I've bought loads of stuff there previously without trying it out, but I'm not going to bother going in there again. They were very unhelpful when my mate took his akai looper he bought there back due to switches not working. They wouldn't exchange it & never got it repaired when he left it there. He had gigs coming up & ended up repairing it himself at his own cost. -
Is a compressor of any real value in fast rock music?
Jean-Luc Pickguard replied to Clarky's topic in Effects
You might have more luck with a limiter. I really like the cheap-as-chips Behringer green bass limiter/enhancer. I play fingerstyle, but it really makes fast 16ths pump out nicely. You may not notice much when you turn it on, but you'd probably notice more when you turn it off. -
Interesting custom bass

It must be for playing rock music. -
Bloody rare Fender Urge 5!
Jean-Luc Pickguard replied to RaNoFuNkY's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
The Custom shop logo looks possibly a bit dodgy as if its been put over where a real serial has been sanded off. I wonder what the B sounds like on a 32" scale. Not sure I'd like the half-inch action at the 12th fret. -
Fun at The Bass Cellar
Jean-Luc Pickguard replied to doctor_of_the_bass's topic in General Discussion
Its obvious what the problem is - the management must be putting guitarists in to run the bass shop. A bass player would understand that the correct number to own is one more than the currently number. -
Dr Randall Kertz wrote a very good book called "The Bassist's guide to injury management, prevention & better health" - available from his web site.
# " I took it out of the packaging and not only was it beautiful to look at, but was perfectly in tune!!! It is the best resin back semi accoustic I have ever played and I'm looking forward to many happy hours with this baby. In short I love it. Keep producing your great guitars." - Maureen, South ....well after this and the OP's glowing report i just couldn't resist it and bought not only a bass but also the company!!! don't you just love unsolicited advertising?
If the instruments being shipped in tune is such a unique selling point, what does that tell you about the target-market?

Cyclotron recycled guitars and basses

I think they're rubbish -
I never managed to get past Matthew 6:5-6.7. Maybe my understanding of it was incorrect though. Anyone care to explain it the meaning of the passage?

I'll definitely get one of these if I ever have cause to want my bass to sound like a wasp in a jamjar - or want to go "snick snick fnarr fnarr" at rehearsals.

What do you think, experienced bassists?
Jean-Luc Pickguard replied to Annoying Twit's topic in General Discussion
Luvverly mwahhh on the second clip. A while ago I was planning on getting one of the 5 string fretless harley bentons, but never got around to ordering it. If I thought I had a use for one I'd [s]ask the wife for permission to[/s] order one right away. -
Vintage valve heads and huge vintage cabs
Jean-Luc Pickguard replied to Mr. Foxen's topic in Amps and Cabs
My alarm bells will be going off that he's probably had a quote for the 'minor' repair then decided to unload the amp as the repair cost exceeds the value. He wants to drop off rather than give you the chance to hear it before handing the money over. I hope I'm wrong, but he sounds like a tit of the highest order. I reckon he's either trying it on or is genuinely stupid. -
Vintage valve heads and huge vintage cabs
Jean-Luc Pickguard replied to Mr. Foxen's topic in Amps and Cabs
I'd be worried about
...it also has a very slight crackle at higher volumes. On agreeing with the winning bidder i could take the cab to an amp repair man, who i know to be very good and we could just add the cost to the price.
I hope its a simple & inexpensive repair. -
Maybe that's a Sei headstock then ....
Nope - he was looking at my fender h1 jazz at the time. Occasionally I need to cut an inch or two off if the string is too long - I had to do this on a couple of the strings when fitting a set of Thomastik JF324s to a daisy rock elite, but I always wind as much around the post as I can without getting overlaps. I've noticed when buying bady strung secondhand basses that people (non basschatters?) often don't realise that you should put a bend in the sting and poke the end down into the hole in the post.

Martin Peterson at the gallery once advised me not to cut strings. So I don't.

The Daisy Rock I bought on ebay at the weekend (see my thread on crappy packaging) had the crappy strings wound like this:

I've just taken delivery the bass I bought at the weekend on ebay. I never expected it to be sent by royal mail std parcel service - not recorded or signed for. The bass is a lovely daisy rock elite with glued in neck and angled back headstock so my heart sank when I saw the parcel as even from a distance I could see that it wasn't padded at all. The outline of the parcel seemed to be the same size and shape of the bass. I was expecting to find a headstock break. Packaging materials used were:

a bin bag
About half a roll of parcel tape
nearly a whole roll of electrical insulating tape
A piece of cardboard wrapped just around the neck
a small piece (less than 6" x 12") of quarter-inch thick foam
The tape was tightly wrapped around the outside like a mummy so it wasn't protected from dropping or falling over at all. Foam had been taped around the headstock, but it was probably about one tenth of the amount required to protect from a headstock break had it fallen. The bass was then inside a smelly/dirty thin old (80s I'd guess) gigbag which I put straight in the bin. Luckily the bass had survived and the headstock was intact, but this is the third time I've had in instrument off ebay with similar packaging. Who else has been amazed at stupid ebay packaging on something recieved? My previous one was a daisy rock guitar similarly wrapped but with cling-film instead of the bin bag.
