1. Well, I don't like to play solo's either (I've got nothing to say) but sometimes you're in that situation that you're announced to the audience without expecting it, everybody turns around and the audience starts to cheer... Not much you can do if you don't want to spoil the mood so you just go ahead with it... (often with a disappointing result imo :-))
2. Apart from the sound, it strikes me again how the drummer in this video just keeps playing that tight groove during the slap-solo.. I get so tired of all these drummers who like to build up the groove and give you that tiny hi-hat as soon as the bass-solo starts.. They think they are giving you a present but I'm always thinking "give me something solid I can play upon". Everyone in the band gets this tight foundation when they solo except for the bass-player... (sorry for the off-topic)
3. I'm not willing to spoil the vintage character of the bass I have, so thanks for the tips which leave it like it should be without changing too much.. The pre-amp thing makes his sound a bit more "sophisticated" while most Jazz-basses sound like... well, jazzbasses :-) The Miller-sound is not the sound you're going to mingle with any repertoire you want to, that is a thing I do understand. But each time I hear him play I just think to myself that it would be nice to have that sort of sound in my possesion although I certainly don't want to be a copycat. Thanks again for all the advice !
4. Thanks for all the usefull info !
5. Thanks... seems like he always gets this sort of "hi-tech" dimension in his sound which makes it a bit more clinical in a way but still with enough "warmth" (hard to explain). Sounds a bit more trebly when he plays with that sort of Yamaha DX7-bass ingredient in it.. Mine sounds far more like a good solid seventies bass instead of these pimped up basses... Got a feeling that even my Celinder which I bought here on BC sounded more Miller-esque than this 77-bass.
6. This may have been asked before but I probably forgot the answers, sorry. I recently got a Fender Jazz 77 for a great price around here in Belgium (the owner felt guilty because there was a sticker on it..) Anyone has got an idea what Miller does to all his jazz basses because in a perfect world this should sound a bit like him but it doesn't really .. I do realise the power of personality in the fingers but still...what kind of preamp is it or which modifications were done ? I used to have a signature Miller bass but even that one never came close to the ones he uses... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6_3GUmybOCY http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Y3dnGzI2l0
7. She's a good player but not convinced by this.. you can see that her fingers aren't ready to deliver the Pino-vibrato at the end of the notes but the original track hides this problem.. Would like to hear it without the original bass so loud in the mix.
8. This is such a relief... How many times I have been looking at these pictures while I just bought a white Stingray. But purple is such a lovely colour...
9.
Here's the Better Then Therapy video about the rehearsals for the Police reunion tour. Great stuff (it was included in the 4 disc CD / DVD Certifiable package. (Sorry, I don't know how to embed the YouTube link. Any suggestions?). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Vx0H3ZbGmk
Great stuff, thanks !
10. Most of the time I just look at tweedehands.be (which means secondhand) and from time to time one comes along.. To be honest I don't get the prices they ask around here in the FS-section on bass.chat. 3 to 400 euros is rather common around here... But sometimes you just need to be patient.
11. Just got this white Musician 924 for around 350 euros... after cleaning it up and setting the neck straight it turned out to be an amazing bass. I always wanted to have one of these after seeing "Mirror Man" by the Human League.. 12. It's a funny thing but my three favourite bands all star bassplayers who sing though the music is totally different : McCartney (Beatles), Level 42 and The Police...
13. I saw the reunion tour of the Police in Antwerp and was really disappointed.. Sting's voice couldn't cope with the high notes anymore (what a turn off after hearing the support act with his own son singing a lot better) and halfway the gig he made a sign to the other two that his voice was gone (the second date in Antwerp was cancelled). The chemistry was also gone.. Copeland was sloppy and Summers wasn't the magician I always though he would be.. I watched the video posted here and the drumming just goes everywhere and not always in a grooving way.. The second song suffers when you listen to the tempo.. I regretted seeing the reunion.. it was one of my favourite bands and it spoiled my memories...
14. I agree with the Godrich-opinion.. I think Nigel was the only one who had a great influence on Macca. Chaos is a really great album and I recently listened to Memory almost full and I didn't like it at all no matter how hard I tried.. Most of the time the single is really great and the rest is just filler... Although I'm a huge Macca fan I'm not too fond of the way his voice has changed through the years.. there is a mellowness which has gone and I hear this in the new single.. Quite a catchy tune which grows on me but not his best. I hope Ronson brings out the best like Godrich did...
15. I always thought that was a keyboard.. great story !
16. What a great version... I started crying (really) In the beginning I didn't know who the bass player was (couldn't see him) but I heard that the guy had a great feel and yes :.. It was the Welsh lad again :-)
17. Indeed... some songs he sings I really don't like (but that's a matter of taste) but as a drummer he's one of the best...
18. I was wondering why anyone can't like Collins playing ... the sound of his drums, his fills, his timing ? Help me out.. He is a very versatile drummer who plays with power and taste.. absolutely not a one trick pony ( he's a lot more than the gated reverb on In the air tonight). His playing on the Grace and Danger album by John Martyn of his fusion roots in Brand X or the tight "Paperlate" style.. What is there not to like as a bassplayer when playing with Collins ? What would turn you off at the end of that gig ..I'm very curious. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rhcu6HBoifs
19. I bought that Celinder and sold it to Bassagent who recently sold it again...
20. Both of them are great players but this doesn't do it for me...has nothing to do with any kind of funk either. I saw some footage of the North sea jazz festival with Larry Graham, Santana, Prince and Mark King. Suddenly they were all human when they started to jam...sloppy endings, didn't listen to each other, struggling with gear and their ego's. I suddenly realised the power of rehearsal even on their level.
21. I had a gig in Antwerp once and I took the Alembic with me.. afterwards I was loading the bass into my old Opel Corsa which was parked aside the bar. As I was doing this, one of the customers came out and said "You do know that that bass you were holding is worth more than this car" :-) When I traded it in for the Fender a week later someone walked into a bass shop and said that he was looking for an Alembic, a bass he had heard recently.. the owner showed him the Alembic formerly mine and sold it to him. It turned out to be the customer who made the comment about my car.. it's a small world. Good luck with your sale... !
22. I can't stand the combination of a humbucker at the bridge and a split pick-up closer to the neck....
