  2. For info. I put a little review up with my impressions of the bass here:
  3. I'm "on honeymoon" with my latest purchase, a MIJ boxer. A P/J hybred, which successfully manages to be a re-issue and an update worthy of a 2021 release. Choosing my bass! I spent around 3 hrs making a racket in Bass Direct, armed with my ears and and an open mind. They have a large collection of new and used kit so it look me a while to decide. The important criteria were the sound (tone/power) and playability, together with looks and cost. I was prepared to pay more if needed and It was a tough decision as there were some really nice basses. The Boxer came home with me because: 1. When soloing the neck pickup, it was one of the nicest sounding of the basses on offer. This alone narrowed the search from several down to one of 3 options. 2. It was really nice to play and the satin neck felt just right (search was now narrowed to 2). 3. The extra tone options! Those pickups are hot and you get a lot of extra tones options. You have the J and P pups, 3 way pickup selector, each pup has it's own volume. Finally there is the "TBX tone knob", which has a split function. The first half turn functions as a normal tone and the 2nd half gives scoops and boost options. I can even hear it doing an active bass impression at times so it stood out when compared to the others. Check out the video below to hear the sound options. It was already winning my heart before even coming down to it's looks and won there too as I love it's RED colour. Other endearing features are that it is light weight and has solid MIJ build quality. So to sum up it is a re-issue, a great precision and bang up to date with more tone options, hot pickups and great neck. I wanted the P bass tone, power and simplicity. The boxer delivers. There are some things that I don't like. I would have preferred a beefier and less spiky bridge (I hate those screws poking up) and I don't like the sharp corners of the pickups. All that comes with the re-issue tag I guess. Overall it is a "bruiser" of a precision and a real players bass. I'm very happy and although it has Jazz in it's title I'll be using it as a P bass. This video sums it up well.
  4. I no P bass expert so went to Bass Direct I picked my self up a red one of these yestarday, after trying several guitars over about 3 hrs. As I was trading in I could get what I wanted and I eventually got down to two P style guitars. The Boxer and a MARUSZCZYK. Both sounded beautiful and hit the spot to my ears. In some other ways they were quite different. Note: The boxer feels as the name suggests is more of a bruiser, the MARUSZCZYK a bit more classy but was more gentle. I went for the Boxer as it is an exceptional sounding bass, has wider range of tones and it was RED! 😂 👍 I'm liking it this morning even more than when I picked it out....very happy!
  5. I'm really missing live music....I love this.
  6. For me, Fernaners on Lou Reeds New Sensations album. I reckon it is in the fingers, rather than in the technology.
  7. The summer is here and so is this great sounding acoustic bass!
  8. Great to hear that you are enjoying your new bass!
  9. Bought this to inspire my song writing at the start of the first lock-down and have never used it. Since an initial trial it has sat in it's case and has never left the house so as new! I love the Ultra series and gigged an A 6 for a while. Works as a electric, acoustic or blend of the two. Trades considered. Full Description Custom Godin Electronics The unique Godin A6 Ultra Guitar is equipped with Custom Godin electronics, that work to enhance the guitar's overall volume and projection. The electronics include a Custom Under-Saddle Transducer and Custom Preamp, offering volume control and 3-band EQ. 10. Nicco bought a Stingray from me. It was a trouble free deal and he was great to deal with. Recommended.

  12. Sounds like it may have been a fault but maybe it just isn't right for you. You know where you are with the older ones. I find that more care is needed to dial in on this one. I was a little concerned that there wasn't enough "zing". I did find zing by boosting the treble and a touch of mids. I never needed to do that before. Boosting the bass warms the sound up but can also be scarey...so much power there. Note: I believe that the pickup design has some "Bongo" derived. They are beasts that need to calmed in the mix
  13. I love Stingrays but as my band aren't playing live I am playing a much wider range of music than in the past and while my old SR5 could do most things well it wasn't my first pick for everything. I wasn't really aware of the Stingray Special but spotted one when looking around PMT in Bristol.(see pic below). First impressions were that it was cool but maybe too bling for me. This one is a Jan 2020 model and had been in store for a while so it was still at the old price. I gave it a try and was blown away and suddenly the "blingyiness" didn't matter so much. Note: It had looked silver as it was catching the lights but is actually Ghostwood, a green, silvery/grey.😂 Impression? It was a stingray played like one, was lightweight and made the right stingray noises but there were loads of tonal variations. The sound of the 18V electronics combined with the switches and EQ is phenomenal. I could dial in all sorts of warm sounds that hadn't been there on my old ray and it just seemed to have more power under the bonnet. I was there for about an hour and remember thinking to myself "all these sounds from a bass with 1 pickup? Incredible". Now it is mine! Earlier this week I was having fun going through some of the old stuff from my defunct heavy prog band and it was like chopped beef and yesterday was learning some bass lines for a reggae audition and it was like beef stew with a rich gravy. What a machine. I may have found "the one", I feel blessed! PMT in Bristol were brilliant BTW!

  16. I wanted something to complement my Fallout which I love but is like an angry wasp and saw this one come up so took a punt on it un-played. My plan was to put flats on it as I wanted something deep sounding. It came with flats and to be honest I struggled as it was so deep that it lacked presence in the mix. The original rounds were in the case so I put them on and was blown away with the resulting tones. The sound is as the name suggests "dubby" and very musical. The controls are vol/tone/balance. I tend to set the vol and tone where I want them and then change the sound with the balance. Neck pup is very dark, bridge is brighter and there is no noticeable change in volume when changing the bias between the two. You can hear Andy Irvine exploring one in the same way here: The playing position very comfortable either standing or seated. Yes it is wide but it isn't much thicker than most solid bodies. Fit and finish is great. The only thing that I may change is the plastic balance knob, which spins a bit to easily for me but that is minor and easy to resolve and to be honest I have got used to it. Overall I'm delighted with it! I would love to get my hands on a long scale Reverend to try sometime.
  17. My Reverend Dub King. Sounds like it looks. A great deep tone for dubsters, acoustic or light rock! The previous owner put the pup covers on it.
  18. Weights added. 3.6kg and 4.3kg. Note: anything 5 string less that 101k or 4.5kg is light in my book, especially for a SR5.
  19. Well these were/are my favorite 5's but I'm not playing them at all. The dimension works great live. It just sounds right to my ears.
