1.
Is a ticket for Rush really £86? Man alive. I'm sure they will be AMAZING live, but that's a whopping price tag.
But not as expensive for the Australian Pink Floyd (same seats, same venue) believe it or not... I don't think it's unusual for a top act these days.
2. Do you think anybody would be printing out Rickenbacker headstocks in the near future? Oops....!
3.
I have to tell you that Jaco was a game changer. He took the humble bass guitar and turned it into something extraordinary and we had seen nothing like it.
Don't we feel that about all our heroes, though? There's probably one player for each of us on this forum that made us think, 'sh*t, I didn't know you could do that.'. For me it was Lemmy. I had heard nothing like it at the age of 14 (and still haven't). For some he's just a rhythm guitarist stuck on the wrong instrument, but for me he carved out his own niche and created his own sound. Although I've moved on a little (to Geddy Lee, Flea, Aston Barrett, etc), some of his best lines still give me goosebumps. Jaco? I can hear what he does is very capable, but the first time I heard him I thought 'meh, not my kind of thing'.
4. You don't get more iconic than this. And, yes, it has bit of bass :
5. PM replied. Ticket still available. Thanks for the bump, Ray!
6. No, fraid not. I'm only going to the London show, and this is the one spare ticket I have.
7. For sale: One ticket to see Rush at the London O2 on Friday May 24, starting at 19:30. The seat is in block A2, row V - i.e., near the front! I had hoped to persuade Mrs Prunesquallor to join me, but apparently it's a boy thing. Obviously, I would prefer it to go to a fellow BC-er rather than a tout. The price is what I paid for it, £86 (which includes processing fees), plus £2 for first class signed-for delivery. The item will be posted immediately after I have received funds (bank transfer, only, please). Cheers, Neil
8. Just taken delivery of a Sadowsky preamp from this gent. It arrived as described by registered first class post. I can thoroughly recommend dealing with him.
9. Talk to your tutor! The bass is a great instrument because it can be as easy or hard to play as you want it to be. If you're finding the theory too much right now, tell him/her to back off a little on that and concentrate on some fun, easy lines that you can play. And, yes, it will be a stretch for your fingers at first as well. Don't worry - they will loosen up and start behaving over the next few months. Four weeks is very early, as others have said. Good luck!
10. They're fivers are they? No cash at the mo, though. I'm looking at getting one in a few months. Thanks anyway!
11.
Yes '87 onwards, thats where the 6 bolt neck, truss rod adjusting wheel and 3 band EQ came from. Early ones are Alnico pickup equipped too for full Ray goodness
That's my next bass sorted, then.
12.
I'd hunt for a nice late 80s or early 90s one, six bolt neck but two eq, nice figured neck etc
Did they do fivers then?
13.
just because you own a ferrari it doesnt make you a good driver (and can also make you look a tit) but the ability to jump into any car and drive it like no other can that gives you kudos
This! I'm going to get a T-shirt: Evenin' Squier! (No Mustang Sally)
14.
+1. Sorry OP, but this is the best advice you can (should) expect on a bass forum. Get it professionally diagnosed and treated....and get well soon.
+11111 And maybe ask to get referred to an orthopaedic consultant, if it doesn't settle down soon, just to be sure you're getting the right diagnosis and treatment. Tell your GP your income/cat's life depends on you being able to play, even if it doesn't. Oh, and if you're told physio would help things along, don't wait for the NHS to get into gear. From experience I can tell you you'll wait months to even get an appointment. Best to go private. Get well soon!
15.
This is not always true... it depends on the teacher. I've come across very poor exponents of their craft who profess to teach... and I mean VERY poor.
Which is why I wrote 'good teacher'! It's a very good point though, as discussed above. Recommendations are the way to go if poss. If not, some instructors will offer a free trial lesson.
16. Grangur, defo look for a good teacher. He or she would be able to see the weak spots in your technique and straighten them out quickly. Chatting one-to-one with him or her would also help you decide on your priorities. Good luck!
17.
When I was 9 I had lessons in school in the recorder, and lessons outside school on Spanish classical guitar, at 12 I had lessons inside and out of school on the Oboe.... At 38 it was completely sensible and logical to have bass lessons!!
Totally! There's nothing like someone watching you play and saying "Not bad, but if you do it like this you'll find it a lot easier". Instant expert feedback beats Youtube or books every time - although I use those as well. I've started playing in my forties, so I want to learn fast and not pick up bad habits which could take ages to unlearn later. My instructor charges £20 per hour as well. He's well connected, but doesn't go on about it unless it comes up naturally in conversation. Talking of which, my 45-minute lessons always stretch into an hour and a half because we enjoy a good natter; and, no, he charges for just the 45 minutes. Top bloke!
18. Bought a very nice RC booster from Ash. A thoroughly recommended Basschatter!
19. I'm going to echo what people have said about patience. I started playing around a year ago - from scratch, not from guitar - and it took me a good few months to play a minor scale at the nut end of the neck OFPF. You probably already have the finger independence thing from guitar, so you've already got a headstart. Just take it easy and practice scales and exercises where it's comfortable, say, below the 5th fret, and then work back from there. I'll also add it can be useful to find yourself a good instructor for at least a few lessons to advise you on technique - it's saved me no end of time. Little and often's the thing. If you start to feel strain, make a cup of tea and come back to it. It's easy to overdo it and get sore (been there!). Once your fingers have become used to the stretch then you'll be able to relax and you won't feel like you're throttling a chicken every time you attempt an arpeggio. That's how it's gone with me anyhoo.
20. Well, Alex Lifeson's being cheerfully saying they're doing to do 2112 in interviews, so I don't think it's any surprise to people following them. As for 'old' vs 'older', even mid-period stuff is now decades old. I just hope they do lots of stuff from Permanent Waves - Moving Pictures - Signals. That was MY Rush.
