Any particular reason to pick a 4 ohm cab over an 8 ohm cab
Shockwave replied to xgsjx's topic in Amps and Cabs
Personally my suspicion is that there's a lot of super-lightweight amps that simply don't deliver the power they should.
I would have to agree on this.
however a better solution is almost always to get a second 8 ohm cab which increases your sensitivity so fewer watts will get you more loudness, and more current flows from a given voltage because the load is now 4 ohms so it's a win win.
Very true, but my problem is exactly that i can only use one cab max, need to learn to drive etc.
(not like Ped and his crazy 'breath to fret' Vigiers)
I know! I thought i was the lightest fairy bass player there. But Ped takes it to a new state light! -
But what amp were you using? I can guarantee that an EBS 2x10" 4 ohm would be no louder than an 8 ohm one when powered by one side of my PLX 3002 because of the amp having enough power at 8 ohms to take the cab to its limits. Alex
Interesting, I put a 8ohm 1x15 Black widow cab up to a 4Ohm 1x15 Black widow and the 4ohm was much louder. The problem is, for some reason some amps just prefer running flat out at 4 ohms. Case in point an Ashdown Little Giant. Really quiet when running at 8 ohms. And only really get any power at all when going between 12 and 5 oclock. But the 4ohm seems to be quite loud from the off and just continues to get louder the more the master it turned up. I know many people who also experienced the same thing with the Little Giant. I guess this is something that happens with Class D amps. Hence why i am always concerned about running 8 ohm cabs on their own and why i usually insist on 4 ohms. Also considering the SVT i have on the way, derives most of its power at 2 ohms stereo. So i would always appreciate 2 ohm or 4 ohm cabs whilst bi-amping. If i were running it mono bridged (About 1000watts.) I may be ok with using an 8 ohm cab. But then again i am usually playing at higher volumes then the average basschatter. -
I really did like that Shuker chunky neck which is unusual for me, I usually like something skinny and rosewood. And thanks on the TF, and thanks to WoT for making the mistake of selling it to me.
Oh the TF was yours, I was wondering what your stuff was doing away from everyone elses, Had a good 15 minutes bash on the TF. Man that bass sings!
Absolutely wickid day! Wonderful meeting so many cool people. There was some seriously high end kit there as well as HappyJack's £75 Kay, which was the surprise of the day for me, a great bass! Silverfoxnik, Merton, Hamster, Mrs Hamster (she's totally lovely ), Ped, Happy Jack, thanks so much for sorting it. Brilliantly organised! The talks and demos from Jakesbass, Alex Claber (sorry I didn't catch all of it mate), Ped and Bassace were REALLY interesting and useful. Thanks to Paul and Oli on the drums, thanks for the jam! I've come over all cuddly Cheers all !! A few pics quickly uploaded ..
Did anyone catch Bassace's license plate? Fricken amazing! Interesting day. No Mesa 400's, or Ampegs. Shame because thats what i really wanted to try out! Was a bit dissapointed by the Hartkes. Bassfaced cabs were very good and light, Though i probably wouldnt use them with a 5 string as i felt they lacked the extreme lows that i would need. But great punchy cabs! I WAS impressed with the Eden World Tour amps. I am seriously considering getting hold of one now. Best basses of the bash were. Peds Vigiers. The Wal Pro 1. The Gibson SGZ. I feel guilty about bringing my pedullas in such poor nick. Didnt have enough time from practice last night to clean then up and set them up for your average bass player! Great to see all of you. Absoloutely knackered now......Great raffle too........
Hi Guys, just a quick request to anyone coming to my workshop, it would be handy for the purposes of demonstration if you could bring a random piece of music (cd or summat) as I would like to play for you guys a piece that I've never heard before in order to demonstrate the importance of ear training. Obviously the chances are that I will have heard some of the things that you may bring but I'll be honest and if I've never played said track before I should be able to show you how quickly a well trained pair of ears can analyse a piece. Cheers in advance. Jake
I'll have to bring some black metal then
If it's possible to do PayPal (or similar) transactions on the day on one person's laptop (I've no idea how that would all work) then that would be a real help for those of us planning to do some trading. Wouldn't you need a Wi-Fi connection at the school, though?
Nah hes got mobile internets on his 3 dongle
I can bring my 3 dongal and a laptop if you guys want?
At this rate you'll be bringing the entire contents of your house! But yeahhhhhhhhh Most BCers wont be used to chatting in real life about basses for hours on end. So would probably need their website fix too!

I cant move it anywhere sorry guys, I have no transport at all. I wont be able to take it to bassbash as it seems my lift has pulled out and i doubt he would have room anyway! I cant courier it as my flat is rear access only. No courier company would touch me as they would never find me. Its this cheap because i bought it for that much and because i dont want to have to sort it all out for postage. Cheers PS However if anyone wants to pick it up from me on Saturday early morning and take me to bassbash with them and back, then thats great! -
