1. heres a pic. I can probably solder the wire off but it probably wont look the same again.
2.
Technically they are correct. The original SR5 was introduced in 1988 and used a 2-coil pick-up with a modified SR4 pre-amp. It had coil switching of sorts but was very noisy in single coil mode and ttere were level differences when switching. In 1992 they changed to the 3-coil pick-up and a totally different pre-amp which overcame these shorcomings by using a balanced input and had a switchable resistor chain to balance the gain when changing modes. If you can take a picture of the underside of your 5.2 and send it to me I'll try and work something out, to give you parallel and serial however single coil will be very noisy. Alternatively send it back as unfit for purpose and get a 5.3 which will just drop in. I've got a 5.3 in mine now and it is very worthwhile mod.
Problem is my useless guitar tech decided to ground the pickup and managed to loop and solder wire around the underneath of each pole peice. What an idiot. So i probably cant return it.
3.
The SR5 pre-amp really needs a Nordstrand 5.3 pick-up to work correctly. The pre-amp uses a form of balanced input in single coil and series mode. I've spent a lot of time playing around with various pre-amps and pick-ups in mine. There might be a way to do it but without actually having the 5.2 it is very difficult to explain. If you're anywhere near SW Surrey the I'd be happy to try and fathom it out.
Then why on earth does Nordstrand not show that fact on the website? All it says is its a direct replacement for a Musicman Stringray 5. This kind of thing really annoys me. Unfortunately i am nowhere near you!
4. hey guys. I am having problems installing a Nordstrand 5.2 pickup into an SR5. I want just standard SR 5 switching options. The nordstrand pup has a black, red, Green and White wire. No Ground wire. I have been trying to follow this diagram but with no success. If i follow the diagram to the letter with the nordstrand then The neck position has a very quiet Dual coil with emphasis on the neck coil sound. The middle position is Single coil and very loud and trebley, and the bridge position has the same sound as the middle position. Not musicman like at all. The nordstrand wires use a different colour key then standard wiring. Any help? Cheers.
5. Hey guys. I am having big problems reducing treble hiss in bass internal Pre-amps. I can get zero hiss when the treble control is set between -15 and 0, But anything above the middle position causes a huge amount of hiss, This hiss stops when i touch the strings. The hiss also stops when i switch to passive mode. Ideas? Cheers. Rob.
6.
Lovely looking bass you have there! I'd leave the black pearl guard on. It looks really cool Are you going to put a standard MM pickup back in it, then?
I dont have the original and are very hard to get. So i have bought a Nordstrand MM 5.2 which is the closest i will ever get to the sound of a stingray. I now have to say goodbye to the bass for two days until i get the pickup fitted Byes.
7.
http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_sp...nd_Pickups.html
Oh i ordered the last 5.2 for MM basses they had! Cheers dude
8. Oh and the seller i bought it from is bills music. http://myworld.ebay.co.uk/billsmusic He sometimes gets some real decent stuff and has the best comms ever.
9. Its here its here! It took only 5 freakin days to get here! Someone must be smiling on me. AND i didnt pay ANY import taxes! I have no idea why but its just the way it is. It looks like the thing never went through customs even! Anyway. I have zero gripes on the bass, Everything was accurately described and yes the bartolini is not as good as an original MM pickup. I got some new strings on their way and some straplocks. I am currently in talks to get a Nordstrand replacement pup. HOWEVER. The bass plays freakin sweet out of the box. This is damn good! The strings are like iron bars but still love playing it. I can tell it has the classic musicman tone in it somewhere, i just need to get that pickup out! (I have already found the bartolini a home in my jazz bass project ) Quick question, I want a quintessential MM funk/slap bass tone out of it, What positions should the knobs and switches be at? I like a bit of fingerstyle treble bite as well.
10. I am a man of expensive tastes, But not through choice! I am a huge fan of new string Zing, I love it. However is very expensive on the wallet. I use Optima Golds, Fantastic strings, However when they die they die fast! They are also very expensive. For a working mans string i use Overwater Custom Gauge Stainless steels, Ultra light gauge We're talking 100-85-55-35-25 But only if its a 35Inch scale, otherwise its 105-90-70-45-30
11. Just a quick update. The seller who owns a shop just emailed to say he upgraded my postage from Priority to express and he valued it at 500 bucks to help on the VAT! Class seller Lets hope it doesant get lost now! I now have money for a replacement pickup at least! Rob.
12.
Now there's a funny thing.......... just saw this on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...ME:B:SS:GB:1123
Teehee, If i had the money i would just for the matching pair and for no other reason! Rob.
13.
Shockwave does not buy a BC Rich shock!
Been trying to get away from it recently. I need more substance over style! Plus my backs been killing me recently and neck dive really sucks.
14.
I'd go for the reddest tort or pearl guard I could find to match the body colour. I dunno, I just like the matching thing. How does the Bart sound?
Good question, Its only just been shipped! I am leaning towards white pearliod. I wonder what barts sound like. I'll probably end up trying to get an original replacement, or something thats as similar to the original pickup as possible. Suggestions? Rob.
15.
I knew what it was from the first pic of the neck . Looks like early/mid 90's Birdseye/Flamed maple to me.
Hehe, I actually dated it as a March 2001 made bass from the serial number. Though from the look i would say 90's.
16. Not sure, I have had a suggestion of black from kev. And white from you. I have no idea It was hard deciding to be honest, First i wanted a Deluxe P, Then a Deluxe J, A Custom warmoth inbetween that. And then decided to go with the sound i allways wanted (but not neccesarily the look) And get a Ray. I am not a fan of the MM aesthetic, But the sound cant be beat!
17. As promised. More pics when it arrives!
18. Its damn sad this hasent sold. If truth be told its probably one of the worst colour/fingerboard/scratchplate combinations i have seen. But at that price you'd be laughing your way to a respray workshop.
19. Hey guys. Just spent my hard won moolah. Heres a teaser. What could this be? Heres the giveaway shot. Answers on a postcard please Damage porn It's not the nicest example i have ever seen, but it was damn cheap and had the maple fingerboard i liked. Plus it has Bartolini electronics. I am not a huge fan of Red personally. What pickguard would go well with red? More pics when the bass has been guessed and when i get the bass. Rob.
20. Yes i certainly do http://www.youtube.com/user/Asomodai Its a mix of funk and punk. I also have some vids of the band. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RhME5uazSOs Above is a video of a metal/tango.
21. My Dying Bride - Catherine Blake. Doom at its best. Then again i was listening to Allan holdsworth just before that
22. Hehe of course, I am usually the go to guy for this sorta stuff. I would have this in a heartbeat if i was in the market for a Metal styled bass. However i have decided to be a bit more restrained in my next purchase Good luck!
