1. I'm not going to be able to make it I'm afraid. Off work today so won't be in the City. I hope this isn't your last trip to town as I'd have really enjoyed it. I've passed details to a couple of mates though in case they fancy it. Good luck!!
  2. To me a great Stingray demo track is 'Would I Lie to You' by Charles and Eddie. (Massive disclaimer: Please do not think any less of me for suggestion this musical tosh - but the bass sounds good ) Walkabout from One Hot Minute is pretty Stingray friendly too.
  3.
I think it was your rave review that made me get one. Or was it my rave review made you get yours? Still love it.
Could be... I tend to harp on about it quite a bit Its by no means the 'greatest amp in the world ever!' - but what is?! I got to run it direct to a 50kw Crown/EAW PA the other week and it brought a big smile to my face Glad you're enjoying yours too. I can't believe they stopped making them. Silly Ampeg.
  4. I've got the Schroeder 1210R which, unsurprisingly, has a 12 and a 10. It covers the spectrum well. I used to rehearse with a Boogie Powerhouse, which is a 15 with 4 x10's. That was a BEAST. Ampeg make a similar model too.
  5.
+1 No longer manufactured though, as far as I know.
Yep, probably true, but they crop up on here quite often - thats where mine came from. Preamps are a great bit of 2nd hand kit because its quite hard to abuse them, unlike powerstages and speakers. Also, I see there's a nice SVT3 going at the moment for a good price.
  6. Personally I've never had a problem. I'd always make a call, based on their politeness, experience and musical genre - but the same goes for everything in life, you just have to trust your instincts. I'd always spend a couple of minutes working through the settings with them, and if they dialled in something likely to be sh*t then I'd tell them. At the end of the day there's a big benefit, in that you get to hear what your rig sounds like from a punters perspective

    Gigs

Sorry for not being clued up on london venues, but do you have the rough area/postcode for those gigs, just in case I can get along to one. Cheers
  9. I'd recommend the 2nd hand market, and you don't need to look far from these very pages With the £ in deep decline against the $ I can see new Ampeg prices climbing in the near future, so there's another reason. Starting with speakers... the 410HLF is a killer cab and I had one for the last 10 years. No other single cab goes so low, but it is a bitch to handle. Its almost 2 feet deep, and weight wise is a right fat git. Great sound though. I ran it with an SVT4 Pro with no problems. You should be able to pick up one of these, or an SVT3 for a good price 2nd hand. Either will serve you well. If you are on a tight budget, but really want the valve tone, then consider an SVP preamp and a budget poweramp. The SVP is tremendous and is much lighter (even with a poweramp) than the SVT2 or SVT4. The sound rivals that of the SVT2. Its quality, but at a reasonable price. Sadly I can't advise you on the B2/B3 range as I haven't tried them. Good luck
  10.
This Friday me and Cantdosleepy's band (The Monotremes) are playing a halloween show at The Shooting Star in London E1. It's free and kicks off at 8. Try Big Beef as well, he frequents those parts too I believe. Good luck
  11. One thing that might be useful is to check out some live recordings. For this song we copied the version by Extreme (love 'em or hate 'em, its pretty good) which is a quite rocked up but shows how to cover it with a single geetar and bass. As I recall its a case of holding down the main riff under the solo, but pepping it up in terms of the rhythm so it moves a bit faster. Maybe. Great track though. Love it.
  12.
Hi CB My daughter lives there, I will send the enquiry and see what she can tell us. Steve
Thanks Steve - much appreciated
  13. We've been hired for a gig on Jersey next summer and I'm exploring options. Does anyone know of a PA hire or Instrument (backline) hire place on the island? At the moment I've found diddly squat and will have to bring engineers/gear from the mainland. Thanks
  14. I put this in the 'weddings' thread but thought I'd post it here too as it was a bit of a giggle.... The (wedding) audience were wasted by the time we started at 8pm. First set (1hr) went down very well and we were well up for the 2nd set (10pm-midnight). By the time we came on for the 2nd set it was carnage. We had to stop 3 times for smashed glasses to be cleared from the dancefloor and they destroyed some light fittings. There was a two-foot inflatable c*ck doing the rounds as well. I caught sight of one woman and instantly thought 'this is bad news'. She made her way, mid-song, over the monitors, past/through the singer and guitarist, to me standing at the back. She fixed me with a 1000 yard stare and asked..... "Do you know the theme from Baywatch?" Dear me!?!?! There's been some odd requests in my time, but that took the biscuit. There was just time to include some posh totty dry humping the speaker stacks to 'I bet you look good on t'dancefloor' (who undoubtedly are still profoundly deaf from the experience) to round off a smashing evening. We then played lime golf 'til 3am and went to bed.
Back on topic: I have to learn Sade's "By Your Side" and "Romeo and Juliet" by Dire Straits for a couple of December weddings. Not standard first dance fare but better than some of the stuff we've been asked to do
Check out the version of Romeo and Juliet by The Killers. Whilst a fan of the original, I found it worked better in a smaller band arrangement.

Speaking of requests, I had a great one on saturday. The (wedding) audience were wasted by the time we started at 8pm.
Yeah it works well .. Adding a few testimonials and quotes from happy punters might make it a tad more effective at pulling in gigs ..
Cheers. Its still work in progress and thats definitely something we need to improve.
Oooo well if we had any gigs from you ta very much, I'll try and do the same of course..... I must say I do like your bands web site. We have done Family stuff before but obviously we feel we can't charge our regular rate so we only do that on very special occasions now. We do allow each member of the band a Freebie each year... though I've not used mine for the past two years... saving it for my 40th next year!
Cheers - I'm happy to claim responsibility for the website. Its the product of a very wet and dreary weekend on the sofa back in April. I have absolutely no web skills so I was quite chuffed with how it turned out. It only cost £25 for all the software and hosting too!
Ah well any you can't handle chuck my way please mate.... I'll see if we can squeeze them in.
I think I may actually have done that already! There've been a couple of gigs that we couldn't do, or where they've asked for a certain type of music (which we don't do) and I've pinged them a couple of band details from the signatures on this very site. As well as that I have a couple of local bands that we operate a 'scratch your back' policy with. To be honest we'd rather play 2 gigs where they really wanted US, rather than 10 gigs where they just want 'a band'. Hence we have no money We do have problems displaying our wares for potential punters, but I'd say that over 5 years probably 95% of gigs have been recommendations, and only 5% were cold calls. For example we've played weddings for a brother, sister and cousin - all from the same family (although obviously not the same wedding, even though it was Norfolk). They must be soooo sick of us by now!
  20. Yep - the Berg's are lovely, but they do cost a lot. I had a 410HLF for 10 years and I liked the sound. As a 'one box solution' there aren't many cabs that can handle things like the HLF and, for the record, I'm a 4-string boy and it sounded fine. However it does weigh a tonne and is pretty awkward to shift as its pretty much a cube and has a low centre of gravity. You might like to try the newer Peavey kit (an unusual view on this forum I know!) as I've found them to be very good at picking up the 'clang' sound, and at a far lower price than lots of kit. Equally Schroeder cabs have a mid-voicing that may lend themselves to your sound. I use a 1210R with an SVP and have been very happy. Much much easier to shift than the 410HLF too !!
  21. +1 to The Killers, Hot Fuss Muse - Absolution is a great album Jamiroquai, if thats not too obvious Also, I really quite like Limp Bizkit, Chocolate Starfish etc etc... maybe its not the playing, but the tone is to die for.

Likewise. 2009 is packed full and we're turning them down. People are keen to try andknock £50/100 off here and there, but overall things are still looking peachy. I'd imagine that 2010 will be the dry year as people delay setting a day/venue. At the moment we're still getting people who got engaged in happier times.
  23. Well, the gig is done and dusted. I went for the Sennheiser SKM5000 from Bettersound and..... IT WAS AWESOME! Thanks for the recommendation. Vocals were crystal clear, oodles of headroom, handled the transients well, and had good feedback rejection even when wandering in front of the PA stacks. It was a bit of an arse to carry though... two crates of equipment for one microphone?!?! And the antennae array that came supplied was perhaps overkill, but all in all. Lovely. Key thing for me was that those who listened who know about music knew it wasn't a Shure. They knew it was better, but had no idea of what it was. And also a magical moment where our lead singer declared it to be the best mic he'd used and said 'I might actually go and buy one of these. How much are these mate?'. Hahahahaha
  24. We do Feed the World The bass part is quite good fun. Bizarrely we've been asked to play it as a special request at a wedding this weekend
