  1. My deepest condolences. Upon reading this I've visited my spare bedroom to check the fixings on my 4 hercules hangings (into plasterboard too!). Phew - all safe. I concede that I threw the supplied fixings straight in the bin. My plasterboard walls have trouble holding a showerrail so i wasn't about to risk my most nearest and dearest 4 string friends. I used a combination of these things. The trouble is that the Hercules (or any other hanger) have the screws so close together so there's a danger that if you use 2x of something too industrial that the 3cm between them will take all the pressure and it will pull a 5cm rectangle straight out of the wall when it falls.   2. The AKG units in 1) and 2) say that the frequency bandwidth (is that the right term??) is 40Hz to 20KHz - does that mean they miss "our friends" 20Hz to 40Hz ??
  3. Nope - amazingly Hanley can support two music venues that cater for... higher quality live music. FatCats is on Trinity Street I believe, at the Etruria Road/Sainsburys side of town, whereas Satchmos is on Glass Street. I played some great gigs at Satchmos when I was living round those parts. Fantastic venue.
  4. Hi, We've got a wedding gig booked for the IOW later this year, and I was thinking about getting us a pub/bar gig whilst we're over there. Does anyone know of any bars or pubs that might be interested in booking a rock/pop covers band for a nights entertainment? Cheers
  5. That is shocking on behalf of the Railway. I used to go there as a punter 6-7 years ago and saw some great bands. Hopefully if every bass player reading this forum alerts their 'booker' the next time the pub name comes up then they'll see the errors of their ways. Maybe... For the record, I drew up a contract a couple of years ago which we post/fax to each venue before we play. The first clause is that regardless of whether they sign/reply etc to the contract, this counts as their terms and conditions. (I have no idea on the legal status of this statement though). Another clause states that cancellations on behalf of the band will always be in writing (to stop them saying "someone called and cancelled"). For the cost of a stamp this at least shows the venues that you are serious, and that if they want to cause problems then there are easier bands to pick on. No problems since we started doing this.

  8. A few years back I trotted along to a big name store to try out their Ampeg range. It was when the SVT-IV had just come out and there weren't many around. I was about the only guy in there, and happily sat trotting out my favourite licks. I was kind of aware that a guy had come in and was chatting to one of the store people. After a while the store guy calls over and says "can you play something - this guy wants to hear how it sounds?". So I turned up a bit, cracked my fingers, and launched into my rehearsed piece of Come Together - the Marcus Miller version. The guy smiles, says "cool", shakes hands and walks out. As I was leaving I asked who the strange man in the hat was. Sadly it was Marcus Miller.

  10. Personally I think this is a huge shame. Whether people think the service wasn't great, or whether the stock held was in decline, us bass players are a much ignored/under-catered for breed and I defy anyone to say they'd rather the place closed. It was great to know that if I was in the s&*t on a Friday/saturday afternoon I could go there and find strings/valves/straps or even a spare guitar if things were really bad. Yes, Wapping was better - but blame the developer/landlord for booting them out of that (and they still haven't finished the flats they booted them out to build). Yes, sometimes the service sucked big time - but at least it was there, and it saved my a7se on several occasions. I always got a good price when I asked, and they really looked after me when I went in (on a weekday ; ) ) to go big amp shopping. Shame shame shame... ps. the website is rubbish.
  11. I've only had the Sterling and the Stingray, primarily because I could never hold my head up if I told the guitarists I'd bought something called a 'Bongo'. It looks naff and heavy too (IMO). Of the other two its personal taste. Sterling: + If you are slightly smaller in stature then the smaller body shape will suit you better + jazz(ish) feel neck is faster than the 'Ray + (slightly) more versatile preamp is handy for tonal variations, particularly if you are playing covers Stingray: + Fuller tone, due to body size I guess + Its a Stingray for christ's sake - that makes it soooo cool + Better resale value I'd think. Anyone want to discuss the merits of the Sabre/Cutlass ?? In my experience, its always the Stingray that I'd reach for on a one-bass gig.
  12. I agree - its been mentioned to me before that UK Customs are able to call up your outbound flight details and see what luggage you took with you. Ergo if you flew to the states with a single rucksack and are returning looking like Flea's roady then they'll do simple maths and say you bought them there. It definitely comes down to how much bottle you have. The number of times I've flown into the country and there are no excise people at all is untrue (if slightly worrying). They also have to do the maths on whether a guy with a guitar is the biggest threat to the UK economic stability that week - sometimes its just not worth their effort, even if they did suspect you. Tip (not that I've ever done this of course)... if you have an american friend (regardless of where in the US they live) and they are up for it, is to get them to write you a birthday card or such like and then you can dismiss any purchases as a gift/thank you for helping him move/looking after his mum in the uk... etc. As a lefty with reduced choice (even in NYC) I've got some great deals on ebay. Just go shopping the week before you go to the states and get them to ship to your hotel. Alternatively if you're in town www.southpawguitars.com Good luck.

    Had to contribute this, although it might as well start a new topic entitled "most bizarre (non-song) request"... We've just received this in relation to our next wedding gig: "One really important thing is that we are having a cream carpet so when you set up you'll need to do it in your socks"
  15. Hmmm - where to start.... - Aggressive Steve Harris-type moment which resulted in a broken E string, and the string core going straight through my index finger. Rather painful - but played to the end of the song with remaining digits. Guitarist almost passed out when he saw the blood. - Strap'lock' unlocking resulting in Stingray crashing to the floor and unfeasible noise - Two gigs later the same (unchecked) Stingray having an active electronics wire disconnect itself. Cue mid-song pedal board rerouting to find the (unfindable) problem. PA guy solves it by turning the bass gain through the roof on the FOH (about 15k as i recall). And then of course the wire finds its way home for a short while resulting in bass overload, audience with bleeding ears, tripped poweramps and a couple of blown cones. - Asking the audience if they had any requests : ) - Playing for freebeer and attempting to get my moneys worth (pregig). Then coming off at the end of the gig and complaining to the rest of the band that we hadn't played x, y and z songs. Apparently we had, and I just couldn't remember. - Playing rough bars with no lights on the audience and blinding spots on the stage. You just won't see the glasses coming towards you til the last second. - Having a really gobby lead guitarist in situations like the one above. - Applying superglue into a thumb blister, but accidently supergluing thumb and index finger together - Guitarist getting careless, dropping guitar and shearing every single knob off the front of my combo. - Tucking in to the between-set buffet to the extent that you can't sing and want to sleep. - Letting the bride/groom book a PA ("no, 50w is not enough") - Having a pedal board so complex that your bandmates refer to it as 'the mothership' and you resemble one-legged t*at all gig. Remind me again why I do this?? ; )

  17. Yep - I've had the same issues on ebay. Never for geetars fortunately, but still applicable I think the most sensible answers have already been posted, and I hope it works out for you. But, this is what I did one time... Find out the sellers real name (its often best to check their paypal details for this as its linked to their bank account and people also think its more secure than ebay); once you have this you can use it in conjunction with the 'item location' on ebay. Hopefully this won't give you 'John Smith of London'. Then you can use 192 or other electoral register-type websites to pin down a list of potential buyers. It sounds like a long shot but its worked twice for me. Both times they couldn't have been more surprised that I'd pinned them down, and the goods were always forthcoming Good luck!!
  18. Hi all, I'm fairly (ok, very) new to this board, but I've been playing for about 14 years now. I've found myself in a bit of a situation regarding my live sound and would be keen to hear any advice you might have. I'm playing in a reasonably serious covers band, doing weddings and events. Mainly rock and pop stuff (Killers, Muse, Beatles, Ben Folds). Currently I'm carting around my SVT4 Pro, and using it as a preamp only - straight to the desk (we use a pro sound engineering company with about 10-25kw FOH, so plenty of headroom for the bass). The irony of using 'the world's most powerful amplifier' as a preamp only is beginning to dawn on me - as is the fact that it weights a tonne!! I'm considering keeping the SVT for home use only, and getting myself a preamp to tour around with. Firstly I considered getting myself a Line 6 Pod Pro as a preamp/fx in one; but i fear whether the tone will really be there when i need it?? So then I'm thinking about the Tech21 RBI... but fearing that the tone/options will be limited. Should I get the Tech21 for tone AND the Pod for fx, or is this overkill ?? Any other gear recommendations I should consider?? Cheers N.
