1.
I can't off-hand think of any musician that provokes that strong a negative reaction in me.
Lighthouse Family. Nuff said.
2. any chance of any photos? Its a blinding deal, and some evidence of its blindingness(!?!) might help others see the light
3. Songs: Crossroads by Cream - Jack Bruce at his finest, and all the more impressive for being live Open Your Eyes - Flora Purim (Alphonso Johnson) (Also known as Bug Powder Dust by BombtheBass) Take Yo Praise - Camille Yarbrough Albums: Blood Sugar - RHCP Duran Duran - Greatest Hits Rage Against The Machine - RATM Stone Roses - Stone Roses Pretty much all of Abbey Road Edward the Great - Iron Maiden (its got to be the greatest hits, there's too many other albums) Most Hendrix (in the pocket, every song) Kill em All - Metallica (280bpm triplets anyone??!!) Ummm... Jaco??
4. A bit late i know, but I use Pelican cases for serious (ie. plane hold) travel. They are absolutely indestructable, you can cut the internal foam to suit any bass which means nothing moves around inside, they have wheels, and they have pressure valves on the side in case of any in-flight nastiness. The US army use them to transport weapons, and do air-drops with kit inside these!! http://pelican.com/cases_detail.php?Case=1750 http://pelican.com/cases_detail.php?Case=1720 They crop up on ebay quite a bit, and at least you know they'll arrive safely if you buy internationally!!
5. Man that guy can play!! Does anyone know who he was and what else he's worked on. The drummer was fantastic too. I had my keyboard player sending me text messages in appreciation of his chops so he must have been doing something right!! I believe that Tuesday is now counted as the main show, but that its repeated on Fridays at the usual time - with some extra performances to boot.
6. The X3 Live has had some consistently bad reviews in terms of factory quality control and design issues (google search will show you if you want to read them). Lets hope they've improved things for the Pro. It could definitely be worth seeing the actual one you intend to buy, or being sure of the returns policy.
7. When i went to my local shop to ask about getting my first left handed bass the guy told me to learn to play right handed, on the basis that you need more power in your fretting hand than your picking hand. Clearly I ignored him, but I think he may have had a sound point... Maybe everyone should swap?!?
8. I've spent the last 12 years looking all over for decent lefties, and they are sooo hard to find. Full credit to Warwick for offering a wide variety of models in LH. My advice is to cruise ebay.COM and see what turns up. A search of left + bass usually turns up 200+ models rather than the 25 on ebay.co.uk. Its a trade off... you don't get to try the basses before purchase so you have to be choosy with your seller. BUT - lefty basses tend to appear in the £800+ price range which can be prohibitive. Buying 2nd hand reduces the prices massively. I bought my Thumb V and Jazz Deluxe through this route, and paid peanuts relative to the UK new price (£400 for a studio use only Thumb V, incl all taxes/freight?!?). Of course, you could always try the holy grail.... www.southpawguitars.com. Its almost worth the airfare!!! Its worth keeping an eye on www.leftybass.com as info/deals often pop up. Good luck!!!
9. I'm halfway through Slash's autobiography and I'm loving it. I'm not a die hard Guns and Roses fan, but its a fantastically comical and interesting read. Also, a plug for my mates book "Chic & The Politics of Disco" by Daryl Easlea. Really fascinating and got 5 stars in the Observer Music mag.
10.
Obviously the sound is different on stage to what you would hear out front..... Done a gig last weekend with 4 x JBL Vertec dual 18 subs per side...... big sound out front!!! Generally I don't need that sort of sound on stage though. Are you after more of your sound on stage?
Not really - Generally I've got the SVT with 410 and 118 behind me, plus about 5kw of decent foldback. I can hear myself (and the rest of the band) fine. But at soundcheck, and I suspect during the gig too, it still lacks that... something in the FOH. Don't get me wrong it sounds big and is almost right... its just that last something thats lacking. The thing that makes you pull your stomach in and go 'Whoa'. Does that make any sense? My only suspicions were that it could be something compression related, or something like an Aphex-type thing??
11. You know when you go and see a 'proper' band, (your Coldplay's, Dave Matthews Band's and the like - leaving musical tastes aside for a minute), and the bass player hits a low G on the E string, and you don't hear the note - it comes to you through your shoes and makes you suck your stomach in??? And yet at the same time it isn't just massive vibrations, its just a low down kick thats just soooo deep. What is it thats doing that?? Is it in the bassist's rack, or is it in the PA? In either case, where can I get one? I've done some big gigs in my time, with upwards of 25kw of Martin, EAW and Turbosound gear, but I've still never been able to feel it in the same way. Any ideas?
12. I think there's someting to be said for your GAS increasing proportionately to the time spent on this site! Whilst I've always been keen to pick up a 'bargain'; I've spent more on gear in the two months I've been a member here than I had in the past 4 years!!
13. I did find the seller's feedback quite interesting - particularly his responses to those who left negative feedback. : ) Not that I'm a purist or anything, but I always feel better buying a bass from a) a shop; one of you guys; c) someone on ebay who appears to play bass/sell just basses. Guys that sell patio heaters and gnomes don't inspire confidence.
14.
http://www.precision-devices.com/showdetails.asp?id=17 you could always put one of those in a cab would be a little bowel destroying though and it'd just be low end
Yeah - we use these, which I think house those particular drivers: http://www.emacoustics.co.uk/index.php?opt...4&Itemid=37 Transport is a bit of an issue though!!! I bi-amp an SVT4 into a 1x18 and 4x10 to get the kick behind you, and leave the rest to the PA.
15. also, the Firebass has the variable crossover doesn't it (??) is that just for a further outboard poweramp, or can you biamp internally?? If there's anyway that you can get to bi-amp your rig then I think you'll have much better response 'down there'.
16. There's possibly something to say for not running the amp at 2ohms. You'll get a tighter accurate response at 4 or 8.
17. Is this the same Pensa who now makes the Pensa basses??
18. I had a smashing smooth sounding '83. But whilst I was on holiday my GAS took over and I acquired a Big Muff (Russian - black). Really dirtied things up. Sadly I couldn't get my new acquisition through customs so I'm just left with the memories...
19. I see these are retailing at £149 now. Has anyone tried one?? What with the Thomann T-bone wireless kit going cheap, and the interest in the AKG Bug thingies at £79, it would be great to know what a 'dedicated bass wireless system' offers for the extra £70.
20. Thats fantastic! Thanks very much for that.
21. Ooo yeah - i forgot that option. Plus you can use the hangers to obscure the big screws through the baton. Perfecto.
22.
Use toggle fixings for plasterboard if you're putting any weight on it. They spread the load well.
I know what you mean but i've had problems with these as you can't tell if the toggle has flipped open properly, partic if a bit of broken plasterboard gets stuck in it.
23. I've just been comparing to other more expensive kit The topend Shure stuff goes down to 25Hz, and the top AKG goes down to 35Hz. However the midrange Shure only goes to 45Hz. Ho hum. I guess I'd get in trouble for playing 20Hz at a wedding anyway.
24. Flea - On You Oughta Know, Alanis Morrisette; and again on Butterfly by CrazyTown
25. Its good to get some recommendations. Returning to my earlier question though... the stated frequency response is 40Hz to 20KHz. If that implies that it will only transmit those frequencies then it leaves a gap of 20Hz to 40Hz, which is generally the lowest slider on your EQ, and the stuff that really turns the audiences stomachs. Additonally the THD (total harmonic distortion) is pretty high (thats the crap that makes your tapes sound worse than cd's etc). Can I get an indication of what kind of rigs people have been using these with?? Are people using them with 5 strings? One review i read suggested that it would be ok running straight to an amp or small PA, but if you encounter big PA's each week then you'll hear the lowend loss and signal degradation. Any thoughts??
