1.
Same here. Hmmm, maybe there's something in the water...
Is there a drumchat forum where our 'other halves' chat about the same topics??
2.
Since I found the sweet spot on both the Eden and my Thumb, the last few months have been tonal Nirvana.
+1000 for that. I hadn't played my Thumb V for a while (4 strings are fine for gigs I do). I restrung it last weekend and ran it through my Eden. I loved it. It really was the mutts.
3.
i think i'm going to treat my ampeg to a new set of valves. i've really no idea what to go for...the pre uses 4 12ax7s and a 12au7... i'd like to reduce the noise the preamp puts out a bit if possible. any ideas ?
Morning, I'm contemplating the same at the moment. I think Steve-soar is the man to speak to on this issue... When I was thinking about buying an SVP he wrote the following: "It's got a new set of tubes in it ,Harma Diamond's in positions, 1 2 3 and 5 and a Phillips Cryogenic in position 4. It's quet, for a pre with 5 valves, three dimensioal sounding and I can hear myself at much lower volumes through guitar and load drums." He's a v.friendly chap and I'm sure he won't mind a PM if you wanted to discuss with him. Let me know what you decide to do though as I'm still weighing up my options. Nick

5. Have you considered active speakers (so you don't need the poweramps)??? I did a gig with the active Turbosound range recently and I was very impressed, both with the sound and the portability.
6. Do you have a particular stack and combo in mind (your comments on castors makes me think you do). That might ake it easier to advise.
7. Nope. To my recollection they took the styling from the V-Type range but lacked the tubes. Lets face it, theres a reason why V-Types were called V-Types, and this is a Commando. There were V-Type combo's which covered that part of the range instead. They have the 'tube simulation' technology that Trace but in to the Boxer series around the same time, but its all solidstate IMO. Still, I think you could do a lot worse for a £1 auction with BIM £130.
8. I seem to remember a Bassist article on Norman about 10years back where it said that his cabs are customs... as in he made them himself. Anyone else confirm that??
9. Morning, I've been saddled with finding the synthy bass part for Outkast's Hey Ya. I spent last night widdling with my Bass Pod but the 'palette' is a little broad and i couldn't find anything that worked. Has anyone else played this and found something suitable to replicate the sound? Cheers Nick

11. Jesus sweet christ thats nice playing. I'd love to know what he'd think to have us oldies chatting about him like this. I can beat him hands down on buying a pack of fags and drinking 10 pints though... which we as we all know maketh the bassplayer. If anyone here asks what amp or guitar that is i'll chin them!
12. I'm in the process of changing my rig due to some of the realities of this debate, primarily: 1.) No matter what you have behind you it can never compete or replace a decent foldback system. 2.) See point 1. again. I've done gigs with my SVT4, driving a 410HLF and 118SE. Thats a good 1200w at 4ohms, and I haven't been able to hear it because there's 5kw of decent foldback coming at me too. I turned it off in the end. All a stupidly loud stage volume provides is a headache for the sound engineer and a headache for you in the morning. We now DI everything. Two guitarists run through Pod XT Live's, the keyboards are DI'd, and I just bring my preamps along. Everything goes FOH and foldback, and we can hear whats going on properly. After years of lugging crates around, fighting with stupidly loud lead guitarists and suffering a dodgy back and tinnitus as a result, all i can say is this is the most sensible setup that I've ever encountered.
13.
I've always wondered - if you go in-ear, then presumeably the whole band needs to do it, and all instruments need to be miked up and going through the PA. IS that the case?
Yes and no... All of the instruments that you want to hear in the monitors need to be feeding in the PA, in order to get a blended sound. But whether you all go out and buy IEM systems is up to you. Personally I had in mind to keep the floor wedges for half the band and to have IEM's for the singers. For want of a better analogy, its like listening to headphones whilst your hifi is on. You can all hear it, but the sound is better forthe guys with the headphones.
14. Interesting. Tbone is Thomann's proprietary brand isn't it?? I wonder who actually makes them.
15. Sold pending payment and the usuals... thanks everyone.
16. Morning, This might count as the dullest topic ever posted, and serves no real purpose other than to vent my spleen, but... I've been looking at in-ear monitoring, primarily for the singers in my band (although i wouldn't say no), but it shocks me how expensive these systems still are. They haven't changed at all in price since they first became available to the mass-market 10 years ago. Why is it that they command such a premium, when manufacturers such as AKG/Sansom have created budget guitar wireless systems? Is it to restrict the usage so that the airwves don't clog up? Does anyone know a way to get some on the cheap? Grrrr

20. Hi Dave, Thanks for your response. I guess I was concerned that an A/B Box might remove some of the gain/tone before it hits the preamps. Is this the case? Also is there a tangible difference between a passive A/B (whirlwind type thing) or an active type (Boss/Monkey fx type)? Secondly another BC'er commented that I might have problems with the phasing of the DI's, and possibly a minute time lag caused by the fx chain. Thanks Nick
21. Morning - i asked this as a general BC question last week. Some useful responses (thanks everyone) but thought I'd 'ask the experts' too.... I'm currently playing around with some options regarding my gear and I wondered what people's opinions were on a couple of those options. Basically I'm contemplating running both my Eden Preamp and Ampeg SVP in parallel, creating two outputs to the desk/a two channel poweramp and cabs. I run some effects and I'd add these in to one of the effects loops. The end goal would be a combined bass sound that does clean and dirty, and an effects chain that has an unaffected sound maintaining the lows. Now my questions really begin with a) is this dumb/more hassle than its worth; and how do I do this? I know Boss have their LS2 line selector, but do these add noise/reduce gain and tone before it hits my amps? Are there other ways of splitting the signal? Are there any wireless boxes out there that have twin unbalanced outputs? Any thoughts guys?
22. Yeah, +1 to all the above. I've found it all worked well, but its good to strike up a 'proper' relationship with the seller, with proper questions and answers and all that. Don't just plough straight in with a BIN and expect great service. Personally I've found it more worthwhile with larger items. Thats when the postage is easily offset. Top tip for the day... Find yourself a mate in the US armed forces thats currently posted in the UK. The US Military operate their own postal system. Essentially they have PO Box based in NYC... you get the seller to post to that address (ie. only US postage costs) then Uncle Sam flies them gratis transatlantic to the base in the UK. No customs charges, as essentially the US base in the UK is US territory. Allegedly
23. More a post of 'things that can go wrong' than actual Nemesis, but: - Aggressive Steve Harris-type moment which resulted in a broken E string, and the string core going straight through my index finger. Rather painful - but played to the end of the song with remaining digits. Guitarist almost passed out when he saw the blood. - Strap'lock' unlocking resulting in Stingray crashing to the floor and unfeasible noise - Two gigs later the same (unchecked) Stingray having an active electronics wire disconnect itself. Cue mid-song pedal board rerouting to find the (unfindable) problem. PA guy solves it by turning the bass gain through the roof on the FOH (about 15k as i recall). And then of course the wire finds its way home for a short while resulting in bass overload, audience with bleeding ears, tripped poweramps and a couple of blown cones. - Asking the audience if they had any requests : ) - Playing for freebeer and attempting to get my moneys worth (pregig). Then coming off at the end of the gig and complaining to the rest of the band that we hadn't played x, y and z songs. Apparently we had, and I just couldn't remember. - Playing rough bars with no lights on the audience and blinding spots on the stage. You just won't see the glasses coming towards you til the last second. - Having a really gobby lead guitarist in situations like the one above. - Applying superglue into a thumb blister, but accidently supergluing thumb and index finger together - Guitarist getting careless, dropping guitar and shearing every single knob off the front of my combo. - Tucking in to the between-set buffet to the extent that you can't sing and want to sleep. - Letting the bride/groom book a PA ("no, 50w is not enough") - Having a pedal board so complex that your bandmates refer to it as 'the mothership' and you resemble one-legged t*at all gig. PS. I resisted the urge to say my biggest Nemesis is an 8x10 combo
