Hi, Thanks for all the responses I guess I'm attracted to simple no-nonsence design. A contoured body (54 model) and the single coil pickup, maybe strung with flats? would be my choice. I'm a bit cautious of the simple dual string bridge on the models -anyone have experience of these? Personally I'd like something more like a Gotoh 201 with individual string adjustment, but I guess its a classic design from 50 years ago and if it works and all that.... The Warmouth site is amazing, so much choice-just trying to work out how much it would all cost in parts- I'm guessing around £500, I like the simple natural ash bodies, but I guess they need some kind of finish? unless oiling would be sufficient. It's a minefield...

Hi Everyone, I've been really gassing recently for a 51/54 style P bass. There doesn't seem to be many manufactures doing copies of these only the Fender ones? I really like the MIJ reissues but they are pretty expensive (when you can find them) ~£699 and the Sting signature model isn't very appealing with his moniker on the fret board. I had the Squire Vintage modified (essentially telecaster) P bass with the slab body and hum-bucker which I liked, but are there any alternatives people are aware of with the single coil PUP?? I've take some nice pictures for Talk bass of the '51, 54 and '57 bass showing the body contours which just make you dribble..... Any info would be great. Cheers Neil

Hi, I replaced my stock pickups from my 2006 highway one Pbass with some Schaller pickups. They are ofter overlooked :- The Schaller (PB6)240 Alnico( 14K Ohms) have 6mm pole pieces like the SD 1/4lb, bit hotter than stock pick ups but smooth tone. They also do a (PBX) 236 ceramic (11K Ohms) which is a more traditional type. I used the (PB6) 240 in mine bass and I'm very happy with the tone, they are harder to find in the U.K-but ofter cheaper than the alternatives. Cheers Neil

Hi there, I may be interested in this if you do come with a price? I need a powered mixer for some pub gigs we've got planned. Give me a shout when you decide on a price and I'll see if it's in my budget. Cheers Neil -
Hi There, I'd look out for a Japanese bass. There are often lots of used models around the £300 mark. You can pick up an old Ibanez bass such as a "blazer" or "roadstar" or loads of other manufacturers did P-bass clones. Check out the JapCrap thread in the Ebay section on basschat. I bought an early 80's Japanese Tokai in (yellowed) olympic white, best £220 I've ever spent, is now my main bass. There is lots of Japanese stuff out there, search on here or "MIJ" ,"CIJ" or "Japanese bass" on ebay. You can't go far wrong, there are several JapCap resident experts on basschat, who can advise better than me. Do you really want a brand new bass? Don't think I'd ever buy a new instrument ever again (unless some treated me!) I have not experience of VM squires, though I do love the fiesta red one. Cheers Neil

Hello Alex and everyone, I'm considering making my own lightweight Neodymium speaker loaded 2x10" cab (maybe plus a tweeter) mainly for practicing, as I'm sick of carrying a TE 4x10" upstairs! Really like the design of the Epifani UL-210, Accugroove Tri 210L and Eurphonic Audio NL-210 (covered on the talkbass 'Neodymium “Light-weight” Speaker Cabinet Review’) I've got a friend who's a carpenter who owes me a favour-so he'll make the cab (this once) -just got to give him a design? I've been looking for designs does anyone know of any out there? I have seen Greenboy's fEarful cab designs on talkbass and bill fitzmaurice's designs, but there doesn't seem to be a 2x10" design- I guess there is a technical reason for that? Not fussy about speakers, whichever suits the design, I guess ideally Celestion or Eminence Neodymium? I've read a suitably designed and tuned 12mm ported ply cab with lots of internal bracing is the way forward-he can get the wood trade price (but which kind of ply?) Any ideas, thought or general feedback would be great. This is just a one off (I'm useless with wood, and favours only go so far!) I'll be sure to post all the design and build pictures on basschat Cheers Neil
