1.
Well, you only have yourself to blame. Never been called a collector before though... Agreed that the NS Boomerang is a viable alternative and indeed more versatile than the original pivot plate.. Oh and the bronze ends are still lovely. Cheers Ed
2.
Ha Ha... I'm the only person in the world I know who prefers left hand pivot plates on his right hand Steinbergers! It all goes back to my habit of wearing the bass high on a short strap. The Steinberger pivot is set up to essentially work for all players who typically hang the bass in the time- honoured tradition - fairly low, and sitting somewhat round to the picking hand side of the body. I like mine higher and a bit more round to the front. When you try this with a normal handed pivot, what happens is that as the strap is shortened, the pivot tends to turn round till the long arm is effectively pointing upwards and you're stuck with no further adjustment possible. The answer is to use an opposite handed pivot. The strap which the bass effectively hangs from is then attached to the short arm of the pivot, which allows you to raise it further and the long arm sits horizontally keeping everything balanced. This practise has been with me so long now that whilst I could probably change my ways, at this stage in life I'm not going to! Which leaves me with a deficit of suitable pivot plates - I only have two lefties to use with potentially 5 host basses so I do a lot of swapping dependant on which basses I want to take with me to whatever endeavour! Anybody got any spare lefty pivots? You correctly identify the actual pivot mounting point as a potential whoops but I think in practise, this would probably work out fine - the balance point would be essentially correct but if you used the pivot with little or no friction set, the bass would not tend to self- centre the way a correctly handed one would. A bit like driving some cars in reverse with full lock on - the forces at play tend to hold it on full lock rather than self centre the steering. Boat rudders are the same but I digress as usual... Sbluplanet - if that's you in your avatar, it looks as though you do wear the bass quite high - you may well prefer an opposite handed pivot. Cheers Ed
When I had my XL-5W (now with a private collector in Scotland ) I had a similar issue - I liked the bass quite high, but when you get it up there with the traditional pivot plate, it not only got uncomfortable, but also less stable, and had a tendency to swing around a bit (the 5 was a good bit heavier than a regular XL too). I ended up getting one of these: http://www.nedsteinberger.com/pdfs/boomerang.pdf and getting the the bolt re-cut to fit the thread on the bass. It really worked, especially because you could lock the arms in your preferred position and it was a solid as a rock. The hook ends for the strap were not too strong though, and I managed to break one off, so I got a pair cast in bronze by a jeweller friend of mine (I still have the moulds somewhere if anyone has had the same issue and wants some more made) and they were indestructible. Amazing instruments. Wish I still had one!
 3.
Is this bass on consignment at the Bass Gallery? The wood grain on the upper side of the instrument suggests it might be. If so then I played it. Utterly f***ing phenomenal instrument. Seriously. Just gushes class. Wonderfully smooth, modern Jazz bass sound and its so playable! Sounded like it had just come off a gospel record...just instrument and amp, nothing else. The bridge pickup is ridiculously growly and all settings are so warm. Could potentially be the only bass someone ever needs. Blew me away completely...dare I say, it's perfect? Two point five grand will be well invested in this.
The very same bass, and thank you for your glowing assessment, Kiwi. The more I think about it, the more I think I'm mad selling it!
 4.
[sub]I played one of these years ago and couldnt get it at all. I was going round in circles all the time and trying to not push too hard on the fretboard [/sub]
It can take some getting used to. I'd compare it to skate boarding or surfing - there is a certain 'eureka' moment when you finally let go, forget your need for a body or a headstock, and it suddenly makes complete sense. I used to get the most negative remarks from bass players who'd never even picked one up, based purely on the usual blinkered attitudes, e.g. it's not wooden and vaguely Fender shaped with a bridge at one end and tuners at the other, so it shouldn't be allowed! At least you tried one.
 5.
Being also based in Scotland this did blip on my radar, but I'm delighted with my own XL2 recently snagged from France, and couldnt justify pursuing another. Cloudburst is indeed a jammy sod having both this and the rare Iceberger in his possession.
Glad you found one after just missing out on my L2 Matt!
 6.
I thought so too and I did contact the guy about a week ago as it was for sale not too far from me in Scotland but it was already sold.
It may have been in poor condition with all sorts wrong with it, of course. You could always make cloudburst a reasonable offer - his one is one of the best I've ever seen, and I've owned a few!
 7.
XL2 with hard case was for sale recently on Gumtree for a grand. Im guessing that was a good price?
Oh my good gawd Terence, yes it certainly was....
 8. Always fancied one of these ever since seeing Dick Nolan of It Bites playing a Zon many years ago... it sounded great. Have a bump!
 9.
It has a Heavy Rock Bottom! What more could you ask? ... other than a truss to lift it, and a taste bypass. Both available on the NHS, I'm told.
Makes me want to form a Spinal Tap tribute act and buy this specifically to perform 'Big Bottom'. I had a taste bypass, but I went private. Now all I need is a truss.
 10.
Fantastic cabs at an amazing price!
You are most kind Rumple, and extremely accurate! And a bump...
 11.
I recommend if you're not trading to remove your trade value? BSB

That line gets added automatically by the site. Have a free bump LRH. CB
Thanks for the bump CB, and indeed it is. Who knows, I might still raise the cash for your XL - if you're not just looking for a trade, of course!
 12. For sale is my Stingray 5 Classic in Tobacco Sunburst, in excellent condition, with an MM moulded case. It's currently fitted with a John East EBMM 3-band preamp, but the original 2-band is also included in the sale. Slab body, really pretty birdseye maple lacquered neck, alnico pickup, through-body stringing, damper plate currently removed but included and easily refitted. Lovely to play, with a really big, juicy sound, very reminiscent of the pre-EB Stingrays. No scratches, dings, dents or other blemishes, just a little finger swirling on the scratch plate. Genuinely great condition. Thanks for all the interest, the bass is now SOLD. Dave
 13.
no trades?? not even tecamp rig?
Sorry, I'm looking for a straight sale only.
 14. I've had a hit-and-miss right-angled one for years that I didn't use because I felt I couldn't trust it, so I only used it with my practice amp in the house. Only the other day, on unplugging it from my bass I heard a tinkling sound as something fell to the floor. I realised it was the moving ring on the shaft of the jack that had come off, but it was silver, not gold like the rest of the plug, and also looked rather small. I figured out it was the inner ring, but couldn't find the gold outer one anywhere. Resigned to the fact it was knackered for good, but I could perhaps put a new plug on and still get some use out of the rest of the cable, I cut the plug off and threw it in the bin. It was only when I came to pick up my bass again later that same day that I found the outer ring, stuck over the slightly protruding shaft of the jack socket of my bass. In short, the 'silent jack' is a good idea, but in this case just poorly executed.
 15.
Except for TVs. They went pretty cheaply. But yeah - I agree - Aberdeen is ding for musical stuff on bass. I'm still confused why RnB are a "full" orange dealer but weren't willing to order the OTB500 unless I was actually going to buy it... eh no... I want to try the damned thing first! On another note; BMs did have some good stuff occasionally (got my Lakland there) - though the girl who sold it was a dingbat.
Going back much further, did you ever frequent Brian Middleton Music on Holburn Street, close to the junction with Willowbank Road? Brian would stock much more interesting stuff than BM's, and would let you take basses out 'on approval' with nothing more than a scribble on a receipt book. At 16 years of age in 1976, I took an Antoria Jazz Bass copy out one weekend, and dropped it on the way to rehearsals, completely knackering the finish on the bottom corner. Obviously I had to buy it, but he let me pay it off at a couple of pounds a week, with no interest. It took a long time, and it turned out to be a really good bass. Sadly his business went under eventually, and he ended up working at Bruce Millers. Living 'doon sooth' as I have for many years, I'm not up on what goes on musically in Aberdeen anymore, but back then almost every pub had live music, many of them several nights a week. Changed days.
 16.
Manchester? North? You think you've got problems - I'm in Aberdeen! I've only ever bought on bass out of a shop in Aberdeen and it was my first one. It's a complete Fenderfest up here. I wouldn't go as far as to call it purgatory, but it's close. Since then, unless someone local is selling something I like (which has happened 2 or 3 times) I've always bought at distance. I keep what I like and shift on what I don't. Incidentally, I've never had problem with Interparcel/UPS for sending basses. Also, the furthest I've ever travelled to buy in person (it was a swap, but never mind) was a smidge under 200 miles. Incidentally about the same as it is to go from Manchester to London
Aye, it's nae the same since Bruce Miller's closed doon min! (exiled Aberdonian in Surrey...)
 17. Try these guys - S.M.A.R.T. Distribution, used to be run by a guy called Ian Morton, who also imported Glockenklang at one time. http://www.smart-distribution.co.uk/bassandguitar/modulusguitars/modulusguitars.html
 18. I had a Synapse a few years ago, and it was just a piece of metal screwed securely into the body at one end, and with a hook at the other end that you hooked your strap onto. Simple enough, and it did work, but it always felt slightly unstable to me. How about a small bag of lead weights hung from the strap button at the bridge end? Cheaper than $39.99 plus shipping and duty from the States for a bit of tungsten steel!
 19.
nice one....if i only have such money bump....heh, GLWTS!!!!!
I had to Google that - thanks, I think!
 20. Great combos - I gigged one mercilessly for years, and it always worked perfectly - and it was old when I bought it! I put some big castors on, cut a hole in the middle of the baffle and wired in a piezo horn I got from Henry's in the Edgware Road for a fiver, and it was the most reliable amp I've ever had. It finally died when I loaned it to some mates of mine who were touring in the newly-reunited East Germany with a Nirvana tribute band, and that was only because the bass player used to kick it off the stage every night at the end of the show. A £50 repair, and it lasted another two years until I sold it for exactly what I bought it for. Great sound, and absolutely bomb proof.
