1. Ooh! I like the look of those Elwoods! I do like a zero fret, too. Does he do edge bound necks, does anybody know?
 2. I really should work for Carvin... http://youtu.be/iiZpBCmZBy8
 3.
Oh gawd not this again. Compressors have absolutely feck all to do with compensating for poor technique. That seems to be the biggest misnomer surrounding their use - and it's a fallacy that needs to be taken out back, humanely culled and never spoken of again. Because compression is every bass players best friend.
Correct.
 4.
Update on this - bought an EBS HD350 and that paired with the SWR cabs and the 74 jazz with East pre-amp has absolutely nailed that tone and I love it. However, there is one big problem, I don't play 4 string live at all anymore so as much as the tone is great at home its not going to keep me happy when I gig. Interestingly I do have a Sire Marcus Miller and it sounds nothing like I want it to and compared to the Jazz it's really lacking. So the big question is what is there in 5 string that is going to sound like the vintage jazz with the East pre-amp? Is a Fender Marcus Miller going to be the best bet or should I be thinking Xotic or Atelier Z? I have got to get that tone but in a 5 string variant - so close to the Holy Grail of tone now!!!
You don't need to spend two and a half grand on a bass to achieve the Marcus tone. Spend half that on an ash/maple Carvin JB5! I own an SB5000 (modelled after Marcus' Jazz in ash/maple with black pickguard) and its lush! http://youtu.be/ov5v7uOf_j0
 5.
I have had two pedullas. All maple basses. Both with Bart pre and pickups and sounded awful, dark, low powered and polite. There is some credence to the idea they are dark and low output.
Having bought one of those Pedullas off you I would have to disagree! I thought those Barts (soapbars) were anything but "awful" and their output seemed fine to me!
 6. I have the 5210, the 2x10 version. Had it for getting on 5 years and never felt the need to replace it with any of what might be considered "higher end" brands. Never struggled for volume and to my ears sounds lovely and punchy. Always set pretty much flat, never use the graphic or "Vibe" control. Add to that it's a one hand carry from car to venue. A bit low on features, no fx loop or line in, although the aux in and headphone jack make it great for practicing. All in, I'm very happy with it.
 7. I wonder how it compares to the Lehle Basswitch.
 8. Anybody have any idea what pickups went into the 90's CIJ Jazzes? Where the American or Japanese? Only asking as I was recently trying to get a friend to part with a spare set of Lindy Fralins he has, then happened to hear the direct sound of my '97 CIJ through the FOH without backline and nearly wet myself when I heard just how good it sounded. (Admittedly, it was a very large pa). Made me realise that I definitely don't need to replace the pickups!
 9. Cheers, I like the look of it. Hopefully there'll be some more YouTube vids up soon.
 10. Looks interesting.... http://youtu.be/Icy5lCxsAmk
 11.
I've had 2 Carvins and they are great instruments , I also had this custom build fretless SB built through Bass Gear. Not much love in the UK for them , maybe due to the cost of shipping/ taxes etc . John
That looks great!
 12.
You've owned a Pedulla before, so I believe you
I swapped the Pedulla for the Carvin!
 13. Yeah, Kiesel/Carvin one and the same. I think the Kiesel's are the fancier wood jobbies. Bass Gear did indeed and may still do 'em. I ordered my SB5000 through them and can attest to the high build quality of them. £1300 for that 6er is a steal!
 14. Blimey! 6 strings are not for me but, Lordy.... http://www.kieselguitars.com/guitars-in-stock/117961
 15.
Lovely stuff. I'm not a fan of active basses, but I tried several Xotic basses in Japan a few years ago and, besides being wonderful to play, the preamp had what I can only describe as an integral feel - it didn't change or sit on top of the passive tone, but rather expanded it. I'm still a passive guy, but I have a Tri-Logic II and a Tri-Logic III preamp pedals working their magic on my pedal boards.
Yeah, I recently got a Tri-Logic ll and it's great. My passive Jazz still sounds passive but the Tri-Logic makes it a bit bigger and the mid control is lovely.
 16.
It'll be the string binding in the nut slot. It's too tight, so get a tech to file it.
Yes, that could be worth a look, cheers.
 17.
I stopped using DRs a while ago as I got fed up with the amount of duff strings I was getting. Just sayin'...
I love 'em. They seem to be lasting forever. And as I stated in post, the G on the last set (D'Addarios I think) had the same problem.
 18.
How many turns of the string do you have around the post?
Four turns, DR Nickel Low Riders, so not cheapies!
 19.
Because of all the dollar bills stuffed into it? 😉 (sorry) If I do wear a G string from time to time it's strictly a comfort thing...
20. No mid switches? Have they changed the design or is this one of the early ones? Lovely bass!
 21. Been annoying me for a while now. G string on my otherwise gorgeous Fender CIJ Jazz Bass keeps going flat. Doesn't happen on the other three strings, can't be down to a duff string as it happened with last set as well. I always tune up to pitch, not down. Can the tuner be turned by the tension of the string? Tried tightening the screw on the back of the tuner but it's as tight as I can get it. I don't bend the G string or do any manic slapping. What gives?
 22.
Car or mental breakdown..?
Car, although I may have gone a bit mental at the car.
 23. For asking for a pay rise.... For telling my best mate that the female singer who his girlfriend was babysitting for had been calling his girlfriend some fairly unpleasant names... For breaking down on the way to a gig, despite actually making it to the soundcheck... I think they are the only occasions.
