1. I agree about the Alusonic - sounds fabulous
2. It won't make anyone sound like Prince though...
3.
That sounds like a long-drawn out process, not to mention tricky! Good luck with it though. What's the model of that Gibson (or is it Epiphone?) that is a smaller bodied version of the 335? That would be pretty much the same then. I think it's a 339
It would involve planing the back down by the finished thickness of the replacement cap, routing the mahogany core out in both wings, routing out the f hole, then drilling the underside of the cap out to consistent thickness and planing/sanding smooth. Then putting a mahogany face on the back, chamfering the edges and refinishing.
4. Well that killed the idea rather nicely, I thought.
5. Hahah - I like the idea of playing Big Bottom...! There are plans for a UK ceremony but not this year because my parents are currently between major orthopedic surgeries and aren't fit to travel. Maybe Spring or Summer next year though...Ped's going to be the best man so if you're serious, let me look into finding an appropriate (sound proof) venue.
6. I can donate an SKB 4u rack to the charity raffle.
7. Gibson 335 or something similar - just so funky and sweet sounding. Would happily swap an MSG for one.
8.
Not chambered at all then? I have to say that's a very appealing design. Do you really need 3 though?
Nope but they're an appealing design and great to play. While the design isn't chambered I'm giving serious thought to chambering the sunburst one and putting an f hole in as it's a tad brittle sounding. Perhaps because it's lighter than the other two.
9. The fan boys will be inconsolable. What are they going to talk to each other about?
10.
That is nice! Somewhere between a solid 335 and a double-cut LP/ And with a locking vibrato...
It was Martyn Booth's response to seeing Gibson produce a solid version of the 335. Apparently MB used to work for Gibson and thought he could do a lot better, so in effect the MSG is the guitar that Gibson (and perhaps by inference, Martyn) should have made...
11. All three together:
12. The one I bought isn't the one above. It has much nicer figure on the maple top.
13. This is welcome news. I have two Shuttle 6.0's and have not really needed anything else since. Reliable, sound great, hugely portable...everything else in the same price bracket seems either a copy or inferior.
14. I have one - great, full sound for home practicing
15. Yep, I'm definitely up for it. Dates have all worked out. Flying out to get married the following week...gh.
16.
looks like it may be heavy, are they?
No heavier than a Les Paul. Both made from the same materials although the sunburst is lighter than the blonde.
17. I've run a stereo system at home and used it occasionally at gigs when I've taken the fretless along. On small stages, I've found stereo is pointless unless there is regular use of stereo effects (or run separate output socket per pickup). Most engineers prefer a mono source anyway because its easier to centre in the stereo spectrum. Lows are omnidirectional and become even more muddy with stereo effects. The bass loses its ability to anchor the mix in space. But on a big stage with two tiltback cabs behind, pointing directly at you, and less overlap with nearby instruments, stereo chorus sounds immersive and...pretty damn awesome. I've normally just sent a mono signal to the desk and enjoyed the stereo mix on stage.
18.
To be blunt - they strike me as particularly pointless. At least with basses the two hands have different functions, on piano both hands have to do exactly the same things.
The hands of a pianist have very distinctive but separate roles.
19.
It's very possible that humans would be 50% right-dominant and 50% left-dominant if the latter hadn't been discriminated against, usually on religious grounds. Left-handed = witch, or slave ot the Devil, etc. In less enlightened times many of them would have been shunned by potential sexual partners and therefore prevented from reproducing.
Good enough excuse for more procreating, I say. My other half was born left handed but was "re-educated" by the Chinese state system into being a right hander. Something I consider barbaric due to the methods they used - hitting left hands with rulers or canes when a preference was shown. Apparently its to do with Chinese writing only being capable of being written by the right hand but there are some who challenge this convention. http://pinyin.info/n...d-left-handers/ I get fed up with having to do some things right handed - every time I go through a train turnstile for example, I have to use my right hand. Mobile phone apps are particularly frustrating because I have to reach my thumb over the screen for many functions, the power button and camera buttons are also on the right hand side. But I still play right handed - mainly because I was taught drums right handed (and failed).
20.
You don't get left handed violins. You do get left handed guitars. That confuses me.
How do you feel about left handed pianos?
21. And not a valve in sight...!
22. I tried the notch idea but the screw was too soft (which is why it broke in the first place). I was advised to apply a soldering iron to heat up the screw sufficiently to char the wood around it. It worked and after drilling out and replacing with a dowel I managed to achieve a neat finish. But I won't be doing THAT again. Too risky to break through the body with deep screws.
23. I have loads of basses and I only really play two with any frequency.
24. Used Spector NSCR's are outstanding value, as are Korean made Toby Pro's. Both far from Fender in design though.
25.
I was looking at the Retro 10, but according to the Barefaced site the impedance is either 4 or 12 Ohms. Unless that's a typo, that won't be suitable for me.
fEARful F112 cabs are 8ohm and 20kg each. Very stackable and tiltback for tiny pub stages. Just make the rig as modular as possible by having stackable self contained units that can be added as your stage size increases. A load of Bergantino IP112ER cabs would be the simplest solution.
