1. Looks like Mr Prince got it then? I think that bass has been on Ebay before, I definitely remember that amazing back wood. Last Strata I played was a fretless in the Bass Centre which had a badly warped neck. Nice piece of history though
2. I expect everyone's already sick of seeing my Cutlass 1.
3. Um. ? Nothing else will take advantage of the head's ability to biamp. I don't know if its less than 30kg in weight but if you buy GK, you more or less sign up to buying their cabs too. I run a GK RB700 1x15 combo with their 210RBH and TBH I hardly use the 210. What some people look for in terms of sheer grunt I've found by making sure the wedge shaped combo or cab is pointing directly at my ears.
4.
I'm somewhat new to this bass world, but heroes include Mr Pastorius, Victor Wooten, Bootsy Collins and Robert Trujillo. I'm sure many more will fall into my 'heroes' category in the near future, but, well, there's a limit to the amount of CDs one can buy at any one time to check them all out!
Blimey, thats a pretty wide cross section of styles right there! Welcome to the forum Jonnny.
5.
Thanks for posting the link to the article Funkmaster, I did enjoy reading that. Though I'm slightly sceptical of how the bass 'seems' to play itself, just because it was Jaco's Mark
Its probably haunted mate. Blimey, someone tell Gail Porter.
6.
Perhaps treating other members with a bit of respect may be more appropriate, rather than your version of "honesty".
I agree.
7. the main advantages are 1) Less signal weaking when using long leads 2) More tonal flexibility (loads of options depending on how many knobs you want to play with) 3) Additional element of colouring if you want it (thinking of the mid scoop character of the Aguilar onboard pre's) 4) Additional element of compensation for pickups if you want it (thinking of John East's preamp buffers allowing the player to compensate for different pickup output levels). 5) More knobs to twiddle and blame when you play a bad note. The question of gain is dependent on whether you can set it via a trimpot inside the control cavity. There are some instruments you can switch the preamp in and out on, but if you're using large amounts of boost when you normally play anyhow, that feature is going to be of limited usefulness probably.
8. I've found they feel very similar in terms of stiffness. Shapewise, the Modulus necks feel thinner/shallower on the 5 and 6 string instruments which I'm not too comfortable with. The Sonic Hammer was very nice - lovely low action on it. Status necks have varied from quite chunky on early models to squarish on early 90s to fairly slick on the King basses. Also very low action. Both status and modulus have had issues with neck warping however because of the fingerboard stiffness. I think Status have switched to foam filled cores though on their stock basses which dampens the overtones nicely. Modulus necks still sound a bit clattery, not helped by being paired with ash bodies for the most part. If you're going for a Modulus neck, get the grenadillo fingerboard option.
9.
i might do that i reckon, im another +1 on the wood fingerboard/graphite neck thang
Well, I'm going to hunt for a supplier and see what happens.
10. I thought their prices were pretty good too but there's no way to tell how current they are. I've just sent them an email but judging by their site, they're not big on the internet as a marketing tool. Although they have updated the news this year... ...did you try calling them at all? They do have numbers listed. Otherwise I'm quite happy to check out basslab!
11.
Do you think Hudson was his dad? He was a cool bloke too ;;
Is he the bloke in the skirt?
12. wow, you have exquisite taste Sir. May I ask the serial of the 'Ray? The top on your MK Sig has one of the nicest walnut tops I've seen on the forum in a while.
13.
Crikey... He did that and survived! He must've kept a B-I-G can of bass kung-fu in reserve for protection from flying fists/phones/saliva (delete as applicable).
they were engaged at one point
14. Lovely stuff presoul! Congratulations! You've supported their gear for quite a while haven't you?
15.
Personally, having basses with; A Maple Neck and Phenolic 'board, The Vigier with its 10/90 neck and Phenolic 'board, Numerous Wooden items (!), And having played Statii, Modulii (sic), Ped and the Doc's S2 Vigiers, Cutlasses etc. with their all-graphite necks, what I'd like is.... A Graphite necked instrument with a wooden fretboard. Especially a fretless with an ebony fingerboard or a fretted with Wenge... Stability & neutrality from the neck. Warmth from the fretboard... Anybody? or am I totally mental?!
+100000000000000 I've played the same basses and come to the same conclusion, although we could both be mental. I've been searching for somone who will sell headless graphite necks with wooden fingerboards for YEARS. I've talked to Rob Green about selling me a headless neck too. Sometimes he's said yes and sometimes he's said no depending on when I've spoken to him. I think a nice bit of wenge on the front of a graphite neck would go a long way towards cutting down the fret clatter and brittleness. Interesting that we've formed the same conclusions from totally different starting points perhaps...?
16. After 4 hours searching this morning, I re-discovered what is perhaps one of the only true custom graphite bass manufacturers (ie will make you a custom all-graphite instrument from a shape you supply). http://www.miller-instruments.com/ This is one of their standard models - all graphite:
17. heheh, ok Kev, so does the logo look like mine or is it lacking the "1"?
18. Its all about what motivates you isn't it?
19.

Definitely gets a prize for being the most boring bassline. I mean, just show up with a looper pedal, play for the first 4 bars and walk off stage! Easy money! Peekaboo is still hard to beat though
20. I suspect the problem maybe that the amp is overheating. I had a similar issue with a Warwick combo years ago.
21. Here's one for the books. Jeff Bridges the actor is apparently a bass player. Steve Klein designed an acoustic bass on behalf of Taylor:
22.
Ahhhh but we like drink laden floosiees......!
+1
23.
Nick (ps - just bought another Vigier!)
That one off Ebay? 24.
I like CK's idea of asking posters if they'd give a bit of an introduction but shouldn't the onus be on the person joining BC to have the decency to do that?
In principal, absolutely. FWIW I believe the whole point of running forums like this is so people CAN SHARE stuff eg. information, advice and experiences. The more people share, the better the forum is. However we also have a range of backgrounds and social dispositions. As you've already pointed out, some people don't sign up with the intention (or time even) to become part of the forum. However if the membership encourages newbies to become more involved, then I can't think of a better way to retain them and (hopefully) make the place more interesting to use. I'd suggest its the membership who can make the biggest difference, not the mods.
25. great article, nice layout too!
