BC Awards 2012

We've been overwhelmed by a single response so far!
2. Nothing for me apart from an Eventide Pitchfactor pedal. I focussed what little spare cash I had on outfitting a workshop so I can make my own insturments . Although if I have to move again to find work, I'll have to pack the lot up.

BC Awards 2012

Hi folks, its that time of the year where we get to reflect on the last 12 months and give recognition to those who have made BC a better place. After a discussion between the mods, the following categories are open for nominations over the weekend. Depending on the response we'll either put a poll together over the Christmas break or go straight to an announcement on New Years Eve. The categories are:

The Robert Trujillo Award for Altruism - The most generous/selfless BC'er this year
The Guy Pratt Award for Hilarity - The most entertaining BC'er this year
The Halabja Gas Attack Award - Highest turnover of bass guitars this year bought and sold on the forum
The Big Bang Theory Award - for technical assistance above and beyond the call of duty
The WTF Award - for the bass related event, quote or press release that had us scratching our heads (and nominating Ped or I for the new look classifieds won't count )
The Kim Jong Il Award - for your favourite moderator
Email your nominations to the admin inbox ([email protected]) with "BC Awards" in the subject so we don't miss them. Each nomination should be supported by as much evidence as you can supply. For example, if you want to nominate someone for the Halabja award, knowing how many instruments were traded would be helpful for us. Similarly, quotes off the forum would be helpful too. Ped and I will have a rummage around in the merchandise department and see if we can't come up with a few prizes for BC members. In the meantime, on behalf of the mods and admin, we hope every single one of you has a fantastic festive period, filled with love, laughter and loud music. Stay safe. Steve
4. I've had that too although it was in my junk folder. Protecting contact information is our highest priority. Our host was very careful to examine whether security of information had been compromised after the last hacking and it didn't appear there had been any attempts to access the database. I'm wondering if its possible your email may have been publicised somewhere. Bots trawl the net and record email addresses automatically in order to generate spam lists that can be sold.
5. I got frustrated with learning chordal stuff on bass, so I took up guitar instead. Much easier to hear the differences in 7th and major 7th chords,, 6th/9th/11th and 13th chords, inversions and voicings. I kind of play guitar more than bass these days just because I'm finding it more interesting.
6. Right amp, right price, bad timing for me unfortunately.
7. Wasn't the zebra wood Session on Ebay one time? It seems familiar...
8.
What kind of analysis tools do you envisage would help ?
We need to know more detail about what is being posted and where. We don't know much about how many new topics are being created per month in which sections, we don't know who is doing the most posting in each section, what the most popular items are...stuff like that. Stuff that could be easily bought up with targeted searches and would help us understand how different bits of the site are being used. But its a ballache to log targetted searches every month. Much better if we can run some kind of report with pie charts and animated strippers and sh*t.
9. Oh we would have loved to have done that. Problem is...there are no analysis tools available with the modules. Everything would need to be coded which would need funding.
10. Hmm, the gospel sound that makes it onto recordings is not a sound that works very well live. Forget about ideals. You have a bass that can make it happen so just find a sound you can listen to on stage and let the "gospel" sound engineer figure out "the gospel sound". If your live sound is mic'd for FOH then get a neutral sounding Class D amp and scoop the mids with a parametic eq around 250hz. Good luck hearing yourself, however. On a noisy stage, mids are everything.
11. According to some members it was broke and did need fixing. The problem with politics is that the right question sometimes reveals how divided everyone is about what the right answer is. This means we don't always get a clear direction about what the right thing to do is. But sometimes the outcome matters less than talking to people about the outcome.
12. I'm waiting for a carbon graphite bowl back to be made. I've wondered about a bass version.
13. I'd have your arm off if I was closer. Reliable bass amps, one of the first to use Class D technology...rated at 450w BTW.
14. Gear Acquisition Syndrome. It's an affliction affecting many forum members.
15. I'm normally a pretty nice, generous and kind guy, and some former (female) colleagues read weakness into that. I also came from healthy work environments where people were comfortable calling a spade a spade when engaged in a professional discussion. Apparently my open and honest approach to discussions made my colleagues feel threatened and I ended up being scapegoated for a wider suite of issues surrounding the performance of the team which weren't helped by an industrial psychologist who had a chip on his shoulder and power tripped. Luckily I had an incredible HR advisor who was also very experienced in managing psychologists and who could see through all the crap. He was a rock and an amazing teacher through what was the second most traumatic experience of my professional career, behind being made redundant for the third time. However given my colleagues had the ear of the General Manager and once the HR advisor left to take up a role as Director of HR in a hotel chain, I was on the tactical equivalent of a hiding to nothing. He advised me simply to get the hell out. Last month the GM added me on linkedin which was interesting, given she only has 9 contacts. I hope she's gained some new perspective on the situation in the last 18 months. My former manager has to report to a new management position between her and the GM now, also. My fiancee had anger management issues that she tried (unsuccessfully) to control, fuelled by insecurity and jealousy and a traumatic experience in her past which I was at a loss to anticipate triggering from time to time. So from 2009-2011 I was getting it in the neck both at work and at home. On reflection I should have fawned over her more I guess, she was needy but I wasn't in a place emotionally where I could do that with my situation at work. She understood I was in a difficult position but that understanding didn't translate into tempering her own needs. She got worse once she left to go back home for 6 months (given we were in less contact). I made her aware of this risk before she decided to leave but things got to a point where the verbal abuse in emails became unrelenting. Things got to a point where we effectively both gave up on each other. The advice I was given with bullies was mostly about avoiding showing weakness...a bit like stories you hear about how new inmates cope with being in prison, I guess. However the anecdotes offered on how to show strength have tended to be very tailored to specific situations and solutions were stumbled across by accident. No real principles to take away and apply. I was bullied in high school too and tended to respond by beating seven shades of proverbial out of my tormentors too. That worked really well as a way of teaching them some respect but its not an really an option for anyone in the workplace. Since 2011, and moving both jobs and location, things have improved to a point where I can feel the healing is happening and my confidence is returning. Some domestic stability and job security would help that process continue by allowing me to focus on things that are positive for a change....like finishing the kitting out of my workshop and making some bass guitar bodies. Sorry, off topic I realise. Back on topic - yes, a peaceful, stable and secure future would be nice...a 400m wide flat bed drum sander and an oscillating bobbin sander too.
16.
That risk could be the making of you Risk keeps you on your toes! like fighting mike tyson. Except an analogy that puts the odds more in your favour of success
I appreciate your intent. However I've been paranoid enough for the last 5 years thanks to redundancy followed by bullying at work and in a long term relationship. It's affected my self confidence and ability to sustain intimate relationships since. Some security and stability in my life has been long overdue. So if a business could offer that I'd certainly consider it.
17.
you could get the capital to start your own business
Hmm. You don't say...I wouldn't mind this but without the risk of losing everythng I own.
18. I'd settle for a permanent job.
19.
Blimey, I'd have asked my sister to bid on those if I'd known, on Trade Me I assume?
Yes, but you'll need to organise a direct bank-to-bank transfer. Trademe doesn't offer paypal although there is sometimes a service that will accept credit card payments but no obligation on the seller to offer it. Otherwise cash on collection. You'll also need to organise shipping from NZ which is likely to be pricey. Otherwise I would have jumped on a few item's I've seen on BC recently. If you get screwed over, Trademe doesn't have a dispute resolution process like Ebay, they'll just work to establish there was bad faith on the part of the seller and notify the police on your behalf. After that, you will need to take matters forward directly. I got screwed over for $600 on a laptop three years ago, had to wait a year for the guy to go to trial and he was eventually found guilty and ordered to pay me back. Although I only ever received one payment of $50 before he was then charged and tried on 22 counts of GST fraud, fined $30,000 and sentanced to 18 months in jail. http://www.bayofplen...claims/1217278/ I haven't recieved anything since then...although he is due to be released next month.
20. I've seen a couple of PreEB rays go for 700 quid in NZ. Simply due to a lack of demand. My mate bagged one. There was a Kubicki Ex Factor for sale for $1100 last week. If I wasn't having to cough up for tradespeople, I'd be stockpiling...
21. She's awesome if a little eccentric. Glad she manages to make it over every 2 years or so.
22. Reckon we should ask Andy for a donation.... Nice story tone, thanks for sharing

You missed one.
24. My Chandler (Richmond) strat has a warmoth body made from SOLID flamed maple. Sounds really good too...they certainly don't make them like that any more. If it has Fender on the headstock it could be a transfer or it could be legit. The neck pocket might reveal more info.
25. Born in Fareham, lived in Warsash until 1981, used to revisit quite regularly.
