1. For me the main disadvantage has been the width of the neck of the 5 string, having said that the main advantages were not having to move around the neck so much and as mentioned above the difference in sound between open E and 5th fret on the B string. I have also just moved back to four strings for the time being, due to having to do some acoustic stuff, and am really missing that extra string.

3. Best Christmas music I've heard so far
4. Nice work, I really like Allright.
5. John Paul Jones, first tune I ever learned was the Immigrant Song Gene Simmons, second tune I learned was Strutter Paul Simonon - still play a lot of Clash tunes Billy Sheehan - had a lot of time with a bass teacher years ago trying to learn his stuff Les Claypool - no words needed
6. Hi, The band I am in is called Broadarrow Jack, it's a steampunk band and for some reason the majority of our songs have a nautical theme. We have been together since January, and played five gigs so far. The songs range in style quite a lot, and there is an ever growing folk influence. There are six of us in the band, vocals, guitar, bass, violin, viola and bodhran. We only have one recording so far, and it can be heard on our facebook page. Facebook page is here http://www.facebook.com/BroadarrowJack We are midlands based, some east midlands, some west midlands.
7.
New track just added to the Basschat group on SoundCloud: http://soundcloud.com/skollob/squeeze ... no 'real' bass involved, but a shedload of the synthetic variety! Some of you might like it; many will likely loathe it God only knows what I was thinking with this one. It's basically a bunch of half-baked ideas all mashed together with some odd YouTube samples thrown in. Mixed on headphones late at night, so "watch yer bass bins" as the saying goes - as the low frequencies may well be fierce. Or not. I have no real way of telling. Avoid if you're a fan of laid-back blues and folk. Give it a whirl if you like drum'n'bass, dubstep and odd electronic stuff.
Really enjoyed that, liked the use of the Dr Who bit in particular.
8. Like it, you could add it to the soundcloud thread (in the recording forum) as well if you haven't already.
9. I think talent is partly inherited and partly down to practice. I have a friend that used to play, he seemed to be tone deaf and had no idea if he was playing the right notes or not. Having said that he didn't seem to care either. I would agree that certain advantages can be inherited, and maybe a combination of those would be the ideal.
10.
Just added an assortment of bits, mostly stuff put together in recent years that all need something in the way of words & a vocal. Noise Annoys may be here previously along with the selection of guitar breaks for it http://soundcloud.com/aka_walman
I like the melody and laid back feel of Wals Waltz a lot.
11. I've connected via the USB, got the cable from amazon and it worked fine.
12. BB Black Dog were recently featured on No Treble - they have two bass players, and no need for a guitarist
13.
I'm not really liking that thing she's doing with her left leg either.
Maybe that's where Les Claypool got it from
14. BAND WANTS BASS PLAYERS OPINION
15.
They've mentioned that it's a bug that needs fixing. The detailed view of your stats doesn't update with the real number of listens apparently. I'm also not sure whether it counts me as a listen when I'm logged in and listening to my own stuff. And +1 for this being a sticky
It being a bug does explain it, thanks. And another +1 for this being a sticky.
16.
Anyone else noticed how random the soundcloud statistics are? If you go to the "Your Stats" page, the figures on the left of the screen don't match those in the little world map on the right. Neither of these match up with the number of plays against the "You / Sets" and "You / Tracks" pages, and the latter two can be out of sync with each other, even when, as in my case, I've only uploaded one track and created one set with the one track in it.
I had noticed the same thing, I was wondering if one of the figures was complete plays, in that they had listened all the way through, and another of the figures included all plays even if incomplete. Does seem odd though, even changing the dates doesn't seem to make any more sense of it.
17. "I've re-written the instrumental break, it's 16 bars, erm no its 8 bars....or is it 4....no it's 16...I think...I can't remember"
18.
I've never even considered it to be honest but I use EZdrummer and a host of virtual instruments on my tracks (except the bass of course which is real...). The record function does seem to be in your face but I always consider soundcloud to me a showcase thing rather than a production thing. I guess you could use it to record your band live in which case I can see the use of that (i.e. fans go home, log into soundcloud and listen to the gig they've just been too - THAT would be awesome).
Thanks for the info, virtual instruments was the way I was thinking of going when doing stuff separate from the band. Recording a gig live is a fantastic idea, hadn't even considered that before - I'll have to check that out.
19.
Peeps, The SoundCloud website appears to be down at the moment. Perhaps it's buckled under the weight of our new Basschat group?? I'm sure it'll be up and running again soon... I'll keep an eye on it.
And it's back in the room On another note has anyone used Soundcloud to record, or is everyone uploading tracks they have recorded on software or at a studio?
20. I've done the same thing may times, Ghetto Defendant is one of my favourites, simple and sounds really good too.
21. There is a really wide range of styles in the Basschat group already, a really good idea, and thanks for setting it up.
