1.
I assume you are referring to me! Well it was a "tongue-in- cheek" comment about MY ability, and not meant as a criticism of HIS playing! I play in a covers band, and our gigs are mainly in small venues and pubs, and I have only ever been in a studio once, and that was to record a three-song demo CD When I heard my playing isolated afterwards, I was a bit disappointed, but hearing great players isolated too, helps you to realise that maybe that is what it is meant to sound like, and after the final mix, I was happy, as I cut through nicely, and my playing actually sounded smooth and warm. Just an observation, lately, I've noticed that quite a few BC'ers are resorting to insulting comments, when they disagree with other people's views, disagree by all means, but things like "grade A helmet" and worse, are totally unnecessary, and not really what the BassChat community is all about. You see! I disagree with you, but I don't need to insult you.
It wasn't aimed at you mate, it was aimed at the stupid comment left by the jealous bedroom bassist on YouTube. Sorry for the confusion
 2. Sounds alright to me! Whoever wrote that top comment on YouTube though is a grade A helmet.
 3.
Not really, they rarely come up on shuffle, but most things that I do listen to owe a hell of a lot to them (and I'm not talking about f***ing Oasis - classic case of how to do 'Beatles' very badly).
I don't really get the Beatles comparisons with Oasis, I'd never heard an Oasis song that reminded me of them until their later albums. But I have heard Oasis songs that ripped off Wham! T Rex, The Rolling Stones, The Stone Roses, Joy Division, The La's, Stevie Wonder, Led Zeppelin, Burt Bacharach, Gary Glitter, Stereophonics, George Harrison, REM, Neil Innes, and a few more I can't think of, but very rarely have I noticed any Beatles ripoffs. I'll probably think of loads when I go to bed now
 4. I used to stubbornly refuse to tune down half a step to match the guitarist, going to the D# on the A string if that note was required. I soon realised that this was both a pain in the arse and sounded really weak, so I detuned and suggested we go down even lower by another half step to D standard.
 5. Spent the day trying to find a box to put my amp in so I can ship it to Marshall for repair, couldn't find one big enough so I'm gonna have to frankenstein one together!
 6. Floating, I can't mute at all when I keep my thumb on the pickup
 7.
Me too, I once, years ago (8 IIRC), returned a 70's tranny L&B head just for a check over because it kept blowing up on full tilt and they serviced it for nothing entirely because they hadn't seen one for a long while............. it also means that for some of their cheaper amps if it was going to take 3 hours to fix you'd get a sniff down the sleeve and "You'd be cheaper buying a new one mate". Like I say, interesting to hear their answer.
They'll probably take a look at mine and go "Not another one of these lumps of sh**e."' I'll keep you posted with what they say in the morning!
 8.
It's worth a phone call; I've nothing against Dawson's at all, but I've been flannelled by shops plenty times about what it'll cost outside of guarantee. I'd be interested to hear what Marshall say & shocked if it's true. Only bind is getting it boxed & shipped down, but I've found it to be worth it.
Luckily for me Dawson's said they'd ship it to Marshall free of charge. I find £30 an hour very hard to believe, especially if they charge nothing for opening it up, diagnosing the problem and shipping it back.
 9.
I still would, if it's true Marshall have had a massive change in their pricing structure. And IIRC yours could well be described as a quality issue just outside of guarantee, which normally they'd jump thru hoops to fix. It's not often I've sent a Marshall back to them for repair but when I have it's always cost less than a dealer would charge, once it was just shy of half.
You're right, I'll give them a call before I take it down to Dawson's tomorrow and cut out the middleman, as they've not been much help so far
 10.
I know you said in your other post/thread about it that you bought it at Dawson's but I'd be inclined to check with Marshall what Marshall charge.
As far as I'm aware, that is what Marshall charge. All Dawsons seem to have done is phoned up Marshall and asked them, which annoyed me a bit because I could've done that myself.
 11.
How far from the Wirral are you? I know a great amp tech in Ellesmere Port who is absurdly cheap too. PM me if the distance isn't too bad and I'll hook you up his number!
PM'd!
 12. Rang up Dawsons to find out that Marshall are going to potentially charge me £30 an hour to fix my amp. Anybody fancy fixing it for free? ...Anybody?
 13.
Just found a good one on 'The Captain' by Biffy Clyro. Who knew?
A jazz bass through a Boss OD-B 3 overdrive pedal I think
 14. This site and the way people treat each other on it never ceases to impress me, good on you Clarky!
 15.
I know right I still have it on the high side on the 6 string, there's no way you can look cool with one of those anyway right? And with regards to the wrist strain thing, yeah, thats why i've always played with it fairly high but I'm finding I can incrementally lower it without it sacrificing my playing or my health... PLUS it makes things easier on my right hand! Might still have trouble if I go stupid though.... My dad idolises this guy, which is probably why he's a ridiculously sh*t bass player Gotta admit that's f***ing cool though
He shouldn't pick his nose...
 16.
Even outside the guarantee, it should be covered for repair (or replacement) if it's a known issue or faulty part & you've not been abusing it. Should be no cost to you other than maybe postage back to Dawsons. Phone them.
Definitely haven't abused it, it's got a few scuffs from narrow doorways and gig wear and tear, but as far as actually using it, the master volume never goes past 12 o'clock, even less with the extension cabinet. I rang Dawsons before, they're ringing Marshall and will get back to me on Monday. Or so they say...
 17.
Possibly the mains switch gone, maybe a fuse but they tend to just "go" rather than be intermittent for a while.
The cutting out stopped when I turned the gain down, then today, a few weeks later it just wpuldn't turn on at all so it could still be the mains switch I suppose Thanks!
 18.
This happened to me a couple of weeks ago when using one of the 4410s. The Modern Channel was fine, nothing on Classic. Usually means the pre-amp valve has become dislodged in its holder - apparently quite a common fault. In fact, same thing happened on my own 450H. Ordering a spare valve from Marshall would be a good idea anyway. They`re meant to be quite easy to replace.
The amp won't turn on at all though on either channel? Is this because of a loose valve?
 19. This should probably be in Amps and Cabinets, so sorry if it's in the wrong section! Anyway, my one year old Marshall started cutting out a couple of weeks ago while I was using the classic channel (a common problem with this model I believe?) but that stopped after a few minutes of leaving the amp unplugged. So I (stupidly) thought no more of it and carried on using it as normal. Until today when I tried to turn it on, and nothing happened. I've tried different power leads but still no luck, so I was wondering if anyone on here has had the same problem with their MB series Marshall, and what they did to fix it? I've already contacted Dawsons and Marshall and I'm waiting for a reply. Cheers!
 20.
Age and use shouldn't affect it. Some basses have problems, some don't. Changing guage of strings sometimes makes it more noticeable, truss rod tweaks occasionally too. Also if you've lowered the action maybe you're playing a bit more gently which has made you aware of the problem? If you were giving it more welly you may have been compensating without realising.... and when you get used to the new setup and dead spots you might find you subconsciously fix it again with your playing.
I've just changed to a heavier gauge and moved the truss rod too, that'll be it then! Thanks
 21.
The graphite neck might not fix it either. A dead spot is present at that position on most (all?) basses. Some are worse than others but it's usually present, it's most obvious if you try to use pitch-tracking effects like a Boss OC-2 - you'll notice you can't get any useable sound from that note. The second most common dead spot - mostly found on Fenders and Stingrays IME - is Ab at the fourth fret on the E. Not as obvious as the 6th fret G area one, but quite common and still irritating.
I didn't know that, is it a problem brought on by age/use? Because I've had mine for a year and a half and only noticed it recently
 22. I have the exact same problem on my Squier Vintage Modified Precision, same note, same string. The weird thing is, when I detune to D#, the dead note is still there but at the 7th fret and changing the strings didn't fix it.
 23.
sounds like a typical gig - i find the audience doesn't notice either way
Haha, that happens to me and I forget where I am and what song I'm playing when I snap out of it. Like waking a bass playing sleepwalker
 24.
For me, this is a sign of going into a zen-like trance, just repeating them over and over and over and over I like it
Yeah but when you're repeating the last 20 seconds of 'Rain' by the Beatles over and over while thinking about what to have for dinner, it's probably time to stop
 25. Everyday for at least half an hour, playing on my own for more than about two hours bores me. When I start repeating little patterns then I know it's time to stop.
