Well, there is one which just about qualifies - West End Music, which seems to have been there for ever. The vibes are pretty good. But they don't have a lot in the way of basses, and most of their stock is low-end stuff. They do occasionally have some interesting older second-hand guitars, but few basses. The shop in Bury probably has a better selection. There are other music shops with a reasonable selection of entry-level guitars, but for bass you're so close to Darren at the Bass Merchant that there's not much point in going via Ipswich.

If it has to be an unlined fretless and you don't want a Fender, that is going to limit your options somewhat. I'm biased because I have one, but I think you should consider a Bass Collection SB320 fretless. They come up on the 'bay occasionally - the factory-made fretless has an unlined ebony board and plays beautifully. TheRev has just put a defretted one up for trade in the 'For Sale' forum which will give you an idea of what they look like. If you make it as far as Ipswich you're welcome to come and try mine, and I'm happy to go and check out basses if you end up looking at something at this end of the county.

There are many threads already on this site explaining that Parcelforce won't insure any instrument for more than 200 quid, even if you pay the excess. I'd be inclined to use someone else. Having been burned on overseas shipping charges and the exchange rate in the past, I won't be selling anything outside the UK anytime soon.

I think it looks a bit like this, but with fewer frets. Must get some decent pictures done. The temptation to have a matching fretted/fretless pair was strong, but I resisted.

When I first heard 'Canned Heat' by Jamiroquai, I thought I'd never get within a million miles, but it turned out to be less of a big deal than I thought. Likewise 'Twisted' , Rhythm Stick and Bilbo's favourite Ain't Nobody. I'm currently enjoying some of Bernard Edwards lines. I'm working on Everybody Dance, and getting it up to speed and clean (particularly that 32nd-note chromatic run down in the 4th bar) is difficult, but hopefully rewarding.

I use a V-Bass with my covers band, which is playing stuff from the '70s up to the present day. Originally this was because I heard Ped play some great synth sounds at a bass bash with absolutely no tracking or technique issues (mind you he does have pretty good technique!). And we have quite a few things which sound better with synths, either analog or more modern. I also have a really neat little Novastation which does great bass sounds, but it's just more convenient to have it all in one place and I haven't got around to trying that instead with the band. I quickly found that it was also useful to be able to switch between stingray, jazz, precision and T-Bird sounds and if you want to experiment you can also emulate specific sounds, for example the dreaded 'Dont Stop' which I think has a great and very distinctive bass sound. All at the flick of a footswitch. And then there are things like the Muse version of 'Feelin Good', which call for a bass, a fretless bass and a double bass all in one song. No problem. As for the technique comments, I think you have that bass-ackwards. Anyone using a synth or octave pedal needs to have really clean and precise technique or it sounds like a horrible mess.

If anyone is at a loose end on Thursday night in Ipswich (ye gods, what a prospect!) my other band Waxies Dargle are playing in McGinty's Bar on the outside stage. Please come along and have a riotous evening. Waxies play the music of the Pogues, and there will be bagpipes and Irish dancing too. I'm not on bass for this one: mandolin, bouzouki and fiddle is the order of the day.

The Yamaha is made in China these days and I seem to recall that the cheaper Ibbys are made in Indonesia. I played an SR505 in Bass Merchant, it felt like a really comfortable bass but the build quality is nowhere near my Bass Collections. Try and find an SB460. There was one sold on here not long ago.
