Early 70s jazz/funk/fusion! - recommendations?
Coilte replied to tedmanzie's topic in General Discussion
I love the early Crusaders material. Here is a taste : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6F8yUdg6ls -
It is par for the course when looking for new band members. I think it boils down to people thinking they are better than they are. Then when it comes to the crunch, they get cold feet.
Great sounding strings, (best of the flats I've tried) but you need a real high action to stop them buzzing like crazy,
...or a lighter touch !!
its only i watched the GC story theo other day and he was saying it was him!
Must be true so. It would not be the first time that there was confusion about what recordings Carol Kaye played on !!!

Why do some people refer to their bass as 'she'?!
Coilte replied to tedmanzie's topic in General Discussion
Anyway, no offence intended in my lighthearted original post, i'm surprised to see it's kicked off a maelstrom of terrible fury!
No offence taken, and I'm certainly not furious. The smiley in my post should have told you that. Actually, I'm amused that something so trivial could bother someone even in the smallest of ways. -
g&l sb2 is a great bass(one of the best off the shelf p/j in my opinion) but not within the criteria given, Must be New, £350 max
Agreed. Forgot to factor in the shipping and import cost when I gave the Ebay link earlier. Having said that, for the extra few pounds, I'd jump at this offer.
What's wrong with it? "It makes me squirm" isn't even justifying why you think it's wrong. There's nothing wrong with referring to inanimate objects as "she" or even naming them IMO. Posting publically on a forum that (I assume) will contain a lot of people that do what you don't like accusing them of not being in touch of reality or asking them to stop really makes you look very judgemental without any kind of justification.
+1. OP, if this is all you have on your mind, consider yourself very lucky. Why should it matter to you, what, or why, someone names their belongings. -
I'd go for a Tribute G&L SB2. These are amazing basses for the money. One thing that puts people off them is the lack of a tone knob. It was Leo's intention for the jazz pick up to be used as a tone knob. If this is not suitable, then a small upgrade would be the way to go. Personally, I use mine as Leo intended, and can dial in "my tone". That split coil pick up is hotter than most active basses.
thought it was glenn campbell that played bass for them on that as he took over from brian wilson.she played a lot of glenn campbells stuff like wichta line man...
It is Carol playing on "Good Vibrations". There is an interview on You Tube where she talks about this. Yes, she played on a lot of Glen Campbells music too.

I think it needs to be established whether we are talking about bass musicians/players or bass teachers. Being good at one, does not necessarily say you are also good at doing the other.

Moisture and acid from your sweat, along with minute particles of your skin getting between the winds, are what kills strings. Moisture is the main enemy, so the fridge is a non runner IMO. Once they are sealed, store them in a dry place and they should be fine.
-
Yeah, they are a great unique sounding string. What puts a lot of people off them though, is their very low tension which does not suit everyone.
-
I have tried those. They are OK, but I always had trouble opening and closing them. They are cheap enough to try out for yourself. I use Grolsch beer bottle gaskets. You could treat yourself to a few bottles of beer and use the gasket off them, or buy the gaskets seperately. They work a treat for me.
You could've warned me how difficult to find it is. For one I didn't realise supermarkets had been told to stop selling lighter fluid (just as well I don't smoke/use my zippo anymore). So, after reading online that naphtha can also be bought from painting and decorating stores, I thought I'd try that route. Homebase no good. One builders merchant, nothing. Second builders merchant, had heard of it, was quite helpful, but didn't stock it. Brewers painting and decorating place, never heard of it, doesn't exist. So much for doing that today. I'll try again at the weekend.
First of all "naphtha" is a USA term for methylated spirit AFAIK. Next time you are in a DIY shop ask for this and you should have more luck. Having said that, I'd be very careful about using this on the body of the bass. If you wish to try it out, try it on a tiny portion of the bass where it cant be seen. IMO methylated spirit is too severe to be used on the body of a bass.

P with J neck ? Fender/Squier vs Warwick vs G&L vs ???
Coilte replied to hamfist's topic in Bass Guitars
I'd have no hesitation is going for the SB2. The only possible draw back (it is for some people anyway) is that there is no tone knob, just two volume knobs. A small upgrade will fix that though. Great basses for the money.....and that split coil pick up is a monster !! -
TI (Thomastik) jazz flats have red silk windings at both ends. So these are likely to be what are on your bass. Nice they are too !!!
I practice and improve, but not quickly.
Be patient. Any new skill/technique takes a bit of time, practice and patience to master. You are obviously on the right track, so keep at it.

Is no band better than just any old band?
Coilte replied to 4-string-thing's topic in General Discussion
In your post you have answered your own question, i.e.: ...cant be bothered with the hassle of gigging again..... the songs they want me to do don't exactly inspire me...... 90 minutes of music that leaves me cold every saturday night. I see it as a no brainer not to join that particular band. Find a band that plays the music you like. This might inspire you to want to gig. If you prefer not to gig then find a few similar minded musicians who like the same type of music, and just have a jam now and then. If you need the money, then that is a different situation. -
Completely missed that!
For now I would recommend doing as ML94 is doing, i.e. learn all about chord tones and their inversions. Learn them REALLY well, until they become almost like second nature to play. These are dealt with in the early lessons on that link. Then move on to approach notes from a half step above and below etc. You have to learn to crawl before you can "walk" (no pun intended).
-
@ Chambo : I am by no means an expert on walking bass myself. However in my humble opinion, like I said to ML94, you seem to be getting yourself bogged down in modes. These can come (and will make more sense ) later, when you get the basics down. In the meantime, IMO you should check out the link I gave to ML94 above. Those lessons certainly switched on some light bulbs for me.
Hi guys forgive me for my 'thick' questions now At the momment i am being taught major chord tones and there inversions inside out, to create a walking bassline. How would you use the modes for a walking bassline ? Also how would you work out the relative mode for another mode eg. C lydian is the same as ' ...... ' ? Cheers guys
As you are just starting to learn about walking bass lines, I would not get too hung up on modes for now. Instead try to concentrate on approach notes. Here is a set of step by step video lessons on walking bass, which I found very helpful. I think there are nine or ten lessons in all. http://www.youtube.c...c.1.Ext3p_nShJ4
I'm just looking over a lot of this stuff again I think there's something I'm not getting So is it the case that with a major chord, C for example, that all of the notes in the Ionian (C major) will sit against that chord OK? Wouldn't the 2nd 4th and 7th sound out?
Non chord tones are used as "passing" notes for making a smooth transition to the next chord.

How can I make the most of my practice time?
Coilte replied to topcat3355's topic in Theory and Technique
Definite outcomes or targets. Makes it easy to measure how far you've come or to highlight areas for development.
True, but if I'm interpreting the OP correctly, I think he is asking what he can do to reach those outcomes or targets.
