I’ve never needed to. On occasions where the bass feels like it might kick off I can usually sort that by dialling out a bit of low mids on the amp. Plus I rarely have the bass coming out of my monitor, especially on a big festival stage. I’ve found that can be a recipe for disaster.
-
I’ve also had people turn their nose up at the suggestion, but in general they get over it once they hear it in context. Some people can’t seem to get over the look of it though…

Like a lot of upright bass players I have a David Gage Realist pickup on my bass and play the majority of my upright gigs through a Markbass head and 210 cab. I’m not familiar with the J-tone pickup but I’ve rarely had feedback issues with the Realist. I also regularly play the same bass through a big Ashdown rig with a 6x10 cab with no problems, plus it’s been through a bunch of festival hire rigs (usually Ampeg SVTs and big 8x10/4x10 cabs), again no problem. It always helps to have a bit of distance between the cab and the bass to avoid feedback issues, more so as the volume levels go up. The only times I’ve had an issue have been when I’m right on top of the amp as you mentioned, or when playing a hire bass with a crappy pickup.

They weight virtually nothing. I’ve done a bunch of gigs on a Kala U Bass over the years and you barely notice you’re wearing it. It’s worth adding a strap button at the base of the neck if it doesn’t have one (neither of mine did) so you don’t have to hold it like a regular ukulele. Sound wise you’ll be fine for most styles I reckon. They’re surprisingly versatile.

I reckon it’s best to start out on a proper acoustic upright if you can. The shape of the body is such a huge part of learning the muscle memory

I’d definitely agree with everyone else here that buying a cheap bass is probably the best move. Always worth spending a few quid to get it checked over and set up nicely once you’ve got it to make sure you don’t pick up bad habits or hurt yourself because the bass is a bit wonky. Cheaper basses often pop up on Facebook Marketplace so worth keeping an eye on there too.

If it’s mainly reverse delay you’re after, even the more recent Boss delays has reverse. Someone on here is selling a trio of them. The DD7 and DD6 definitely have reverse delay. They’re also handy as basic loopers…

How do i edit an ad to show it's sold
simonlittle replied to Macbass68's question in Site Issues and Questions
Just add *SOLD* to the end of the listing title and it’ll automatically lock the thread -
Exactly this. I’ve sold many five string basses over the years. The cheaper basses flew out the door and the more premium instruments took a while longer to find the right home. Certainly haven’t noticed any difference in selling fives than fours…

Mayones Jabba Custom EP 5 String - PRICE DROP £2500 - *SOLD*
simonlittle replied to simonlittle's topic in Basses For Sale
Thanks @WinterMute! I think it’s because I played Warwick 5-strings for so many years with their tight string spacing. Wasn’t the sound I was ultimately looking for though; which is a particular shame as this bass sounds exactly the way I want but I can’t quite get my hands round it without drastically changing my technique. And of course most Jazz-style 5-stringers have 19mm spacing. My current main 5-string is a Ken Smith Burner which is 17.5mm and much easier for me to get around. I’ll be sad to see this one go though; it sounds amazing -
Oops you’re quite right; it’s a Skyline 55-60. Looked exactly like a DJ5! 🙄 Anyway it’s here just in case

@CalDeephas a very nice-looking DJ5 up for sale on here.

MXR DC Brick M237 Power Supply £35 posted UK - *SOLD*
simonlittle posted a topic in Effects For Sale
Having bit of a clear out so selling my trusty MXR DC Brick, as it’s from the big board I don’t use anymore. The power supply cable is a replacement as the original one was a festival changeover casualty. Includes all the original power cables for pedals and the unit itself is in very good shape. No original box I’m afraid. £35 posted in the UK, or you can collect it from Peckham SE15 and I’ll knock off a fiver -

Very sorry to hear that @kuetsum. Martin and John have done all the work on my basses over the last twenty-odd years and have always done an amazing job.

@kuetsumDefinitely worth speaking to Martin and John at The Bass Gallery in Camden. You could easily drive there from Milton Keynes in less than 90 mins

They do a lovely set specifically for Mustang basses (760F-MUS). Had those on my old JMJ. Am guessing they would fit similar short scale through-body basses. Just checked up on their website and they say “Do not use standard flat wound bass sets on basses that require stringing through the body of the bass (or else they will break). The 760FS-TB fits standard long scale “through body basses” (we only make these in standard long scale)” It is unclear whether this also includes tapewound strings though… https://www.labella.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/La-Bella-Strings-Bass-String-Guide-1.pdf

Just put a set of 760FS-TB’s on my Precision bass. As far as I know they’re the only ones suitable for through-body basses. Pretty sure all their tapewound strings would have to be fitted through the bridge

My money’s on a Micro POG. Pretty sure you can see it at about 7:02 if you zoom into the pedalboard…

Mayones Jabba Custom EP 5 String - PRICE DROP £2500 - *SOLD*

Selling my Mayones Custom EP 5. Bought last year from Guitar Guitar. Recently set up at The Gallery and sounding fantastic. It’s one of the best sounding basses I’ve ever owned; just wish it had tighter string spacing! Collection from Peckham SE15 preferred, or could potentially meet up somewhere. Would rather not post it. Comes with all the original bits; very swanky semi-rigid gigbag, strap locks, tools, paperwork etc. Weight is about 4.36kg so not too heavy and balances very nicely on a strap. Condition is excellent. One small ding near the jack socket, as shown in one of the pics. Other than that it’s perfect. The only potential trades I’d consider would be a Mayones Jabba Hadrien Feraud Signature 5 (preferably in antique brown) or a 5-string Warwick Infinity or Streamer Stage 2. Specs: •Origin: Poland •Year: 2023 •Body Wood: Swamp Ash/AAA Eye Poplar •Colour: Blackburst •Finish: Gloss •Neck Finish: Satin •Neck Material: Maple •Fingerboard: Ebony •Pickups: Mayones •Preamp: Mayones •Pickguard: N/A •Hardware: Black •Gig Bag/Case: Gig bag •Frets: 24 •String Spacing: 19mm •Nut Width: 44mm •Scale Length: 34.25” •Weight: 4.36kg

Basses you don't regret selling (or regret buying)
simonlittle replied to BassAgent's topic in Gear Gallery
I don’t regret selling my Hofner violin bass either. Sounded bloody fantastic in the studio but it was such an arse to play and, like you, I was worried I would break it all the time. Never once did I play it live but it made it onto a good few records over the few years I had it. Now happily replaced by a Wilcock bass which does that sound equally well and gives me loads more options. -
Ah the endless joys of the mystery rattle! As @NickD said, could be one of many things. My bass develops weird rattles all the time and rarely can I pinpoint where they come from. They always seem to resolve themselves. It does help to have someone else listen to the bass and see if they can find it whilst you’re playing, because guaranteed you’ll never get your ear next to wherever the problem is…

Only the Yamaha SLB100 has the headphone socket. With the SLB200 or SLB300 you’d need something in between (headphone amp, audio interface etc). I play an SLB300 and it’s great for silent practice both arco and pizz. Usually plug in through my audio interface. Scale and feel matches my acoustic upright perfectly so everything is directly transferable.
