1. Hi Guys, I've just had to turn down a gig this Saturday, it's near Melton, Leicester. I've said i'd have an ask around, but the band needs to be the dogs guys, so i'm not putting anyone forward who i'm not confident in, as it's my reputation at stake. So i need to hear demos and what not asap please, got untill tomorrow morning. We're a 7 piece funk soul band called Groove Cartel (see my sig for myspace). Something of a similar ilk would be ideal. Thanks Jamie
2. Right oh chaps...that's answered that I've been running the 8 ohm cab without any issues, and then doubled up with another 8 ohm to create a 4 ohm load when needed. From what i've gathered then, only put a 2 or 4 ohm load into the amp, whether that be a pair of 4 ohm cabs or a pair of 8 ohm cabs, rather than mixing about with un-matched loads!!! Sorted!
3.
Bump for a great great cab at a very fair price. This particular model was what sold me on Schroeder cabs. If you are looking for extreme cutting power in a band with real punch, this cab is what you're looking for! Couple it with a tube head and you have got a seriously awesome sounding rig. Mark
Mark...stop tempting me!
4.
According to this it would appear that it would be safer using the 4-ohm tap.
Hmm...just read through that but didn't see that bit. I saw a bit about mixing ohms but it didn't make any sense. I read there that you shouldn't exceed the amps load though as it can cause it to short out. Surely if i were to use the 2.67 overall load of the 2 cabs, on the 4 ohm switch, then i would in effect be putting too much of a load on the amp when in that mode...? But not so if i used the 2 ohm switch?
5. Hi all... Weird one and i've just done a quick search... I've got an SVT head that can go down to 2 ohms, it has a 4 ohm/2 ohm toggle on the back. I've been using a single 8 ohm cab on the 4 ohm setting with no problems, but i'm considering getting a 4 ohm cab. Not i know it'll work with on it's own, but what if i were to use an additional 8 ohm cab, thus production a load of 2.67 ohms in total? Would i simply need to toggle the switch on the back to 2 ohms and because i'm not exceding the 2 ohm limit, i'll be fine? If that is fine, then how would the cabs fair, would the 8 ohm cab be delivered too much power? In other words, when you use to 8 ohm cabs, does the power get split evenly? If so, when i use an 8 ohm and a 4 ohm, would the same split occur, and if it would, would the 8 ohm cab be ok with it? Or does this not really matter...? Hope that makes sense. Thanks guys and gals Jamie
6. Slightly different but along the similar lines, some Cuban salsa perhaps kind sir...i'm not exactly knowledgable about it all, but the Beuna Vista Social club stuff is pretty wicked!!! Then again, it's not exactly Latin!!!
7. Don't do it Steve...i'm holding on to mine!!! They're beasts as you know my friend!!!
8. He did have a great sound at that gig...not my favourite sound, but what he does with it is awesome. He has a very thin bass sound to my ears, but his bass does sound like a Fodera!!! As you'd expect. I had a lesson with Janek last year, as did Geoffbassist, Geoff played Janek's MG Fodera, he said it was low, but that he didn't sound like Janek. To be fair guys, anyone thinking they'll sound like someone else by having the same bass is not thinking straight. You'll only have the same tool to get that sound, but you won't have the players time, feel, voice etc. As for the lack of buzz, i guess it's just down to the quality of the instrument, and the Fodera's are awesome. Don't forget though that the Fodera guys will have spent hours and hours making sure it was spot on for Matt. I know Janek visits them frequently for setups and what not, so if they'll give Janek time to make sure he's happy, i would have thought that they would make sure Matt is just as happy! Having said that, they're pretty stable instruments, so i doubt they need much tweaking once you've struck a happy medium. As for the drop tuning thingy, check out Janek's forum on talkbass, i'm sure he put a post up a year or so ago about his string gauges and the drops. If you can't find it, just ask him. I know he's not Matt, but still, he may be able to offer some thoughts! Jam
9. Still available, now at £450 for both or £230 each, trades for 2x12's welcome!
10.
I use a three-wheels-on-each-side job from Machine Mart here. We rehearse in a cellar down two flights of narrow stairs and it does the job -- though it's ripped the proverbial out of the bottom of my cab. I have serious gas for an NV610 but no cash at the moment Cheers Mark
Nice one with the link Mark...thanks!!! Not sure my SVT would sit very well in that though :s
11.
This probably works well in Australia, as in the US. Unfortunately in the UK we are plagued with old buildings and thus staircases when it comes to moving gear. Wheels and stairs don't mix! Alex
Exactly my thoughts... I mean, for starters...i've got steps up to my house from the drive, that's before i get to a gig :s
12. Thanks for the input guys!! Had rehearsal tonight, had a chance to A/B the SVT and the SVP (powered via my Hartke HA2000), both were used through my Dr Bass RX1260. Well, as for 'farting'...the SVT seems to have stopped giving me jip with it now, there wasn't really any, and i had it cranked! But the SVP/Hartke set-up did...i think this was more due to the slightly more aggressive nature of this set-up. So it appears the cabs may be alright after all...i'm yet to really push them with the new valves and set-up though. The SVT-II (non pro) definately sounds a lot nicer than the SVP set-up, it's just a lot warmer and more velvet like, where as the SVP is more forced, a more growlier tone...it's perfect for fretless though!!! I'm in a new predicament now though...weight is becoming an ever increasing issue, especially since i'm feeling more pain my back as a result of a silly driver last year!!! The SVT may be needing to be replaced :s...it's all go!
13.
I "Cope" with all the weight by using a trolley!!! Makes loads EZ as!!!! I also put skidrails on the rear of both my NV cabs & so VERY rarely have to actually LIFT one!!! With a sound as good as the NV cabs I find it EASY to cope!!
Yeah, i should really invest in some kind of trolley!!! Not the ideal solution though...my back hurts just from a few lifts tonight I can't really get around it, i had a bump in the car last year, and my back is knackered as a result. The SVT is killing me though...still, the NV cabs sound sweet!
14.
Hmmm... It could be your amp, it could be your cabs. The thing about valve amps is that they don't have any more truly clean power than equally powered solidstate amps. But they do sound nice when you push them into clipping, giving you soft compression, then overdrive and eventually limiting when they're really maxed out, by which point they're making a hell of a distorted monster roar. But if you're a player who expects a clean dynamic sound and is playing at the kind of volume where the amp is generally running clean, as soon as you hit a loud low note then bam! you get a sudden dose of farty overdrive. I suspect that may be your problem, especially if it's still happening with both cabs running, which combined one would hope could handle the Ampeg's peak power in the low frequencies. Alex
Hmm...interesting stuff!!! Well i have my first full on session with the SVT in it's repaired state tonight, and i'm taking my newly aquired SVP-Pro which i'll be running through my Hartke HA2000 to how that sounds. I'm guessing that if they both make the cabs go 'fartttt' then the cabs aren't doing so good, but if it's only with the SVT then that's because it's too powerful...crazy stuff!!!
15. I understand what you're saying there... So in reality, the only way to know whether a cab can handle your amp, bass...and technique, is to try it! I'm using a an SVT all valve head and i've had that 'farting' sound from my cabs, dispite them being rated 500 watts at 8 ohms, i've had it when i've used them together and seperately...and my amp is 300 watts at 4 ohms...valves though!!! I've just had the pre-amp valves replaced though, so i'm guessing that could also have been cause for 'farting' noises. I pushed the low end and the valves were knackerd, so maybe they distorted, not the speakers?
16. This was not what i had in mind when i started this thread...i was merely asking a few questions about the range on offer. As for this whole wattage issue. Sorry if my comment 'and when translated into English that means...' was taking the wrong way, but in all honesty, you were speaking another language to me. I understand the comments about not taking time to learn about gear to that extent, but then again, i'm more intent on learning more about theory and harmony, things that will progress me as a player. Yes, at the moment i'm asking about gear, but i wasn't to know about all that technical stuff. I now do. As for all of this...i still don't get the 200 watts thing, but to be fair, i don't think it needs explaining any further. I think i've got the gist of it, but to be fair, all i've ever known about is watts, and i think i'd speak for many by saying that's what most people go by. If it's more to do with sensitivity then perhaps that what should be pointed out...i don't know. Anyway, sorry if i've caused a ruck or any debate. Thank you all for your input.
17. Just a quick one...Mark is a top guy to do business with!!! Very friendly, very knowledgable, and a true gent!!! Rest assured, you're money will be safe spent here, and you're new amp will be exactly as described!!! Hope you find a buyer Mark, Jam
18. You have a PM kind sir!
19.
But does it matter? I doubt it. The limiting factor in power handling for bass cabs is not the thermally limited power handling but the excursion limited power handling. That 200W number is the thermally limited power handling. Unfortunately no manufacturers quote the excursion limited power handling but rest assured that it is FAR less than the thermally limited figure (Acme are a unique exception to this). For a 1000W rated neo 4x10" you're probably looking at 300W excursion limited and for a 500W rated neo 2x12" you're looking at 225W excursion limited. All that 500-1000W figure does is sell cabs, it doesn't actually make any difference in the real world. Factor in the high sensitivity of this 2x12" design and the power handling becomes even less relevant. Alex
And when translated into English that means...?
20.
Yes I do, but I was still interested to learn that the preamps were available directly from Mike Pope. I've got a passive Jazz here that I've been toying with the idea of "activating". I must say that I thought the playing advice he gave you was very interesting, it's given me plenty of food for thought (I'm somewhat theory-allergic!) and I'm going to try and practise a little differentlyand see where it takes me. I also thought it was generous of him to take the time to write to you as he did, seems like a decent bloke!
Yeah he's very much a gent, which i find comforting...some of the top guys seem very arrogant or brash. But he certainly comes across as being very humble. One thing that struck me from his reply is that he's come across as thinking about it from my point of view. It would be easy for someone tho understands something to just dismiss the issue as trivial, but Mike seemed to put it in a way that connected with me. It's had an extremely positive effect!!! Yeah...he does the pre-amps on their own though. A Jazz would be pretty interesting when it's been 'Pope-d'
21. Back up to the top of the tree you beauties!
22.
Very interesting, great post bassjamm! I didn't realise that the Pope pre-amps were available to buy without being attached to a Fodera bass. Is there a web site? I'll have to google it and see what comes up.
They're not readily available, you have to get the custom built for you by the man himself...so going direct is the only way. Just google his name and e-mail him about them mate!!! Not the cheapest pre-amps about i don't think, but quality assured and the fact that you can tailor it to your exact requirements is pretty cool i think. Don't/didn't you have a Fodera?
23. Thanks for the suggestions guys... I've found one on Thomann that i'm quite interested in. Class D, ridiculous amounts of power, 1U and less than £400!!! Still...keeping all options open! 1U would be preferred though!
