Hello everyone, Well, following on from my many other threads about gear at the moment i'm needing some help with power amps if that's ok... I've just got my SVP-Pro pre-amp, so that's all sorted! Now i need some power, don't need anything silly, just enough to fill medium sized venues, so bars, clubs, music venues...erm, the odd festival (although i'd D.I). I need something that will help me get that awesome Ampeg tone out there. I'd prefer a 1U power amp if at all possible, but i guess it's not essential. Price wise, i'm hoping to keep costs down. Dood's Powersoft would be awesome but too pricey unfortunately. Hope some of you can give me some suggestions... Thanks Jamie

That's why i was in touch with him...about a pre-amp, trying to get the Fodera tone. I guess i should just save up and get the real thing like a certain fellow basschatter lol!

All wicked albums!

Happy Jack - Notice what i said about the stage i'm at, i was asking for novice advice, but rather advice that would help and experienced player to overcome the next hurdle! I'll certainly send him a collective thanks...i sent him many kind words of thanks initially as well!!!

I use Dr Bass cabs and i too am considering a 2460. I have an RX210 and RX1260 (the little brother of the 2460)...the 1260 i have is awesome, and i have no doubts that the 2460 would be equally so!!! Don't be put off by the low price tag, they're a contender without any doubt! -

Mark[/quote] Yeah Mark, wise words...you're good at that I think what moved me the most with regards to what Mike wrote was that he high lighted the need to just make music to improve. Not to get bogged down in all the rudaments etc. But it's helped me to take a different view of my technical pursuits, i'm trying to apply them as soon as i can now, rather than just rigidly practice them over and over out of context. Mark - what helped you to get your head into all the Hiromi stuff, and to develop your ability in order to play all of that?

For those of you who don't know who he is, he's one of the top players over the US, based in NY i think. He's well known within the Double Bass circles, but he's also an awesome electric bass player...he's pretty hot at this game to say the lease. He's also the guy he designs and manufactures the pre-amps found in the Fodera basses. Google him... Sorry for that if you already knew of him. Anyway, i've been in touch about pre-amps, but I though i'd take the chance to ask him some questions about harmony and technique. To briefly explain...it seems to me that most top players who i've asked, or heard other people ask about harmony, getting better etc...they all seem to say stuff like get to a college, practice 6 hours a day, do loads of technique exercises, stuff that i personally find tedious and hard! But i want to get better, to improve. So i but that to him...here's my original message and Mike's reply (i asked him if i can post it, he's cool with it) - Bassjamm: [i]A slight side point, more with regards to playing. I respect your playing a lot, and from the material i have of yours, or with you playing, i really find it interesting. I was wondering what tips you may have for young players looking to master the bass? At the moment i feel my chops are slightly slow, but more so, that my knowledge of harmony is limiting me. I'm in no position to go to college to learn, but i practice at home as often as possible. If you need to communicate it to someone else who doesn't get it (naturally anyway), then you need to know what it is. But that's easy once you're actually playing it. So focus on what you want to play and understand it in a way that let's you make music with it. As for agility on your instrument, there are a million books out there with exercises you can use...but the best way to learn your way around your instrument is in an effort to make music. Not, "I wanna sound like Joe Shmoe", but like you're playing a piece of music. Trying to make music in the HERE AND NOW is the best way to get better. Not playing exercises in the interest of making music later.[/i] I just found that really encouraging and felt like it's advice that, if i put it into action (that's the catch), then i'll definately benefit from it. Keith...you have a pm! Yeah, i've loving the SVP...been messing around with it all night! I'm going to have a tinker with it tomorrow again, hopefully A/B'ing it properly against my SVT-II. I've rigged up my mixer so i can take a D.I out of both pre-amps and listen to them both through the same mixer and headphones. Not ideal, but at least it reduces the variables! Any thoughts on what it'd sound like through a Power-amp...would i be able to get my SVT's sound?

I'm trying to A/B the 2 pre-amps the same power stage, but not at the same time. So SVP into Hartke, play away, then SVT into Hartke, no play...doesn't want to send a signal!!! Or, play the SVT as normal, then try the SVP through the SVT's power stage by-passing the SVT's pre-amp...but this creates a lot of electronic interferance...me no like!!! One thing i want to know, and i'd appreciate honest thoughts. The SVP...will it give me the same tone as my SVT when used with a solid-state power-amp?

Jase - Still waiting to hear back from the fella!!! It certainly is a nice sound though guys! I messaged Dan earlier (previous owner) telling him i was loving it. I find it's a bit cleaner, well, i think it sounds a bit different anyway...from my SVT II that is. I got the SVT back last night though, and the new pre-amp valves have given it some real nice tones. It sounded awesome before...but now...oooopphhhhh!!! It's almost a tailor made amp for my tastes, the highs aren't as bitey as they were, they're there, and beautiful, but not as zingy to the point of 'uhhhh'...now they're yummy. The SVP pre sounds like my SVT did before the service, in that, the highs need rolling off. But...as you say Coaster...it does everything BIGGER!!! It does sound bigger, top notch i say!!! Still keen on the idea of the SVT-IIP though Quick question guys...i don't have a power-amp yet. I've got my SVT, and a Hartke HA2000...how can i get the best A/B between the 2 Ampeg pre-amps from that setup? I've run the SVP through my SVT, and i get some electronic interferance which is causing an almighty great 'hum'...but a bit volume cranking soon sees that off Thanks Jam
