Hello everyone, As i'm sure some of you may be aware, i'm moving on from my Ampeg SVT II non pro. It's not because i dislike the tone, far from it, to be it's the perfect bass tone, i really mean it...i can't get enough of it! However, i got crashed into last year and i've got jipp in my back as a result...one things for sure, my SVT II is not helping! I lugged it around on Saturday, nothing out of the norm, and i was in agony untill Tuesday as a result Anyway...i've been looking at different amps etc, but i've completely over looked Ampeg stuff. It has just occurred to me that i can probably get a lighter Ampeg SVT or something like one...and my thoughts appear to be true. The SVT3 and 4, as well as the SVT450H are all of interest. I can manage about 50lbs max i reckon...my SVT with it's solid rack case thing is nearer 100!!! So...any thoughts on the newer Ampeg stuff like those mentioned above chaps? I'm after warmth, that's about it really. I play funk, jazz, r'n'b kind of stuff...so nice thick warm bass!!! Thanks in advance for any help you may be able to offer. Jamie

It's back up at £25 cheaper mate Still think the Epifani 502 would be pushing out the price boundaries a little. I need to get down there to here them, see how they sound. I think i'd prefer Aguilar stuff though!
-
Interesting stuff kind sir! Do you know the difference between the 2 ranges Epifani offer? I think a 902 might be a bit pricey for me at the moment though
-
Yeah, i think i'm going to stick with a one boxy thing...i got confused in the last venture involving pre-amps and what not How's your Epifani mate...kinda considering them too, although i think it'll be too modern for me!

Thanks Dood...you're beautiful!!! Kevin - A trip is most certainly on the cards, i need some bass love!!! Going to review my situation and see what's what! Might have to hook up with you Lee to give the AG500 a pop...sounds tasty!!! Shaggy - Nice idea, i do need some controls to twiddle though, lol! I d.i some times, no exclusively though  Thanks for the idea though...maybe a sweet d.i. and a power amp :brow:
http://www.aguilaramp.com/products_preamps_tonehammer.htm How about this, and a nice light poweramp. Paul Turner has a fantastic sound, a band I played in during the early 90's used to support a band that he played for, he was a fantastic player.
That's light weight for sure I'm thinking more of the amp route...having used the SVP-Pro for a few weeks, the whole pre-amp power amp thing is too much for my head to handle...unless an SVT-IIP came up I the Aguilar's that i've heard, nice and punchy, but i've not really heard much of them...the 359 i've never heard, but i'd like to give it a whirl if it'd suit me more than the AG500!
Who are your favourite players, or putting the question a different way, what's your ideal sound ?. I agree about too many knobs, I like to just plug in and play, that's what's put me off Thunderfunks and Eden amps etc.
My ideal sound is exactly what i have, but in lighter package. I can't fault the SVT's sound one bit. But i won't get it in a lighter package, it won't be the same...and i'd get frustrated that it's there, but not quite. Favourite players, yeah i love Garrison, Janek, Tal Wilkenfeld and all of them, but i'm not doing those kind of gigs, so Paul Turner (aguilar), Me'shell Ndegeocello (ampeg), Pino (ampeg), etc. As i've said elsewhere...this change is not one of choice, it's for health reasons

I've used a 750, quite liked it! But it's not an option really! As for the 359's weight, it is a light weight solutio, my SVT in it's housing is about 6 1/2st, the 359 is the same weight as my cab which i can manage! I'm not after feather weight, just a more managable solution!
-
Simplicity is key here my friend!!! I used to own a Thunderfunk, enough knobs to twiddle to give you RSI...i got confused! I guess i have to like the tone then as it is, as shaping it isn't going to make drastic changes!

SORRY JUST REALISED I PUT THIS IN THE WRONG FORUM Hi Chaps, I'm thinking about swapping my SVT out for something a bit lighter, but it'd still like a warm sound, probably still tubey! Have any of you got experience with the Aguilar AG500, is that a warm sounding amp? What about their discontinued DB359? I'm interested in both of the above, and if the AG500 is warm, and i'd probably prefer it! Any thoughts and what not would be great thanks! Jamie

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ SOLD ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Hi everyone, I'm considering moving my Ampeg SVT-II 1987-ish (i think) amp on. I had it professionally serviced about 3 weeks ago and it had a new set off pre-amp valves in, all the power valves are in top notch condition...the work came to £83.00. Previously owned and toured with by the Beautiful South...gives you some idea of what this bad boy is capable of. Pic: As the title says, this is a feeler. I'm not letting it go unless i'm sufficiently pleased with it's replacement. Price wise, i'm going to be asking SOLD. That's what it owes me, and to be honest with you all, it's what it's worth. They're going for about that here in the UK at the moment. I'd consider a Hartke HA3500, an Aguilar AG500 dual or single channel in part ex with the cash adjustment, as well as Jazz/Precision basses. Thanks Jamie ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ SOLD ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jamie, email aguilar tech support: - there might be connections that you can change inside the unit. I know there is on the DB750.
Already on it my friend
Your SVT is 300-watts output of audio signal. It will also output some heat as amplifiers are not 100% efficient. The input power is therefore greater than the quoted output power The manual says the consumption is 460VA which is near enough an output of 500-watts. So input power required is 500-watts. This is the same whether running on 110-volts or 240-volts. Power = volts x amps. In the eample of the SVT you should be looking for a 240-volt to 110-volt step-down transformer with 500-watt capacity. I hope I haven't confused you.
Beautifully put kind sir
-
Right...just had a look at what we're talking about!!! If i needed a transformer, what wattage allowance would i need? Would i be correct in thinking the following? - Using my SVT-II as an example, it's a 300 watt amp. So lets say it was from the US running at the 110 Volts they use, and i want to use it here in the UK...would i need a 300 watt transformer, or would be ok with just any transformer that converted the 240 volt power form the plug into a 110 volt source for the amp? Or...would i need something that can take a lot more than the 300 watts? Thanks J
-
Hmmm righto...so assuming it doesn't have that handy little switch on the back like most modern things...it'd be easier to get a power covertor thingy rather than have the voltage components changed around? How much should i expect to pay for a mains voltage convertor then please? I'll have a shop around, but i'm new to this stuff, so what might look like a good price to me, may well be expensive to a seasoned shopper in these matters! Thanks though guys! J

Hi guys, I'm looking at some gear in the States, is it easy to convert modern equipment to UK power ratings? I'm looking at an Aguilar pre-amp if that helps. Thanks Jamie
