1. Hello people of the bass empire, Have any of you ever played or had any experiences with a Matt Pulcinella, in particular their Level 5 JJ models? If so, please offer me your thoughts. Do they capture some rude honky Jazz tones? Thanks Jamie

MTD 535...

As XB26354 said...that Lull is lush. But i would not pay 2k for it, there's a passive 5 string one in the UK for £1300 brand new. Ok it's not go the fancy top and eq, but even so, 2k for that Lull is excessive! Lull's are up there for me though with Fender copies! Josh...what kind of sound are you after? At the moment it just seems like we're firing off loads of different suggestions at you, but you could probably narrow things down if you had a few ideas in place? I totally understand about the whole custom build thing. I'd consider one now, but that's because i've got a good idea as to what i want. I'm totally contradicting myself here...but you must consider Marleaux's mate! The M-Bass that was up on here recently is still available through Overwater if you fancy it. And as for Fodera's...there's plenty about overseas, and on their Website...they have some used one's in stock as well as a load of NYC models!!!

I'm now thinking about pimping my F Bass

MTD 535...

Well if you have money to burn that's fair enough...still i'd be cautious. They are great basses though, but i don't think they're for everyone. One other thing i'd consider, as you said you like to chop and change...resale may prove interesting. Just a thought...but if you like it, go for it!!! Incidently...that Mike Lull that they have in at the Gallery is pretty nice, way overpriced, but very nice...i know of one available in your region if you're interested. Pm me if so. Ari's 535's cdefinately had tone though...as Gwilym said, sometimes the pre-amp can offer you too much tone, so proceed with caution, but fiddle away

MTD 535...

Hi Josh, I've owned an MTD Kingston, but i've also played Ari's 535's, all of which were great instruments. I found the, a bit ergonomically challenging, they're quite big basses, large spacing and large necks...but i still enjoyed playing them. The tones you can get are pretty awesome too. I'd strongly suggest trying one before you buy one though. If you can check out that one at the gallery, it'd be worth doing so...better losing a day than all that money on a bass you don't love!!! J
7. Hi Pete, Did the testing earlier today...i just whacked it on standby without doing any volume finddling, and it worked fine!!! And yes it does run down to 2 ohms...it's a beast!!! Thanks
8. Hmmm...interesting What does controls does the pre-amp offer then?
9. Ahh...so his was a 60's...and it sure did hink!!! Bow-chicka-wow-wow!
10. Beautiful stuff kind sir Josh!!! Out of interest...does anyone know if the 60's re-issue basses have that classic honk, or would i really need to look at the 70's? Thanks Jam
11.
gimmie a clue on the songs...i'm not being obtuse. i just need to hear the quintessential honk
Sorry mate, it was just me being an idiot...nothing meant by it Erm...that classic Jaco jazz honk, the sound that really pops out at you!!! For your pleasure...about 30 seconds in when she finger funks the funk out of it: Me'shell Ndegeocello Not the best example, but getting there! Ahh...just found this: Me'shell with rude tone That's what i'm getting at, that rude honky tone!!!
12.
"results in a blown fuse" it could also result in a blown transformer.
Not so wicked :s
13.
what do you mean by 'honk' ? any sound clips ?
We have an un-knower of the 'honk' amongst us...run for your lives!!! Sorry about that. Erm, no clips, there's plenty of songs out there that feature this 'honk'. It's that classic mid bite that some jazzes have, the one that makes you screw up your face, flare your nose, a dig every note you play...ooo yeah...funk, funk funk it up!!!
14.
Yes. Yes you do. Mark
15. Good morning guys and gals, In a moment of madness, i spent a good hour or so trawling the internet last night looking at jazz basses, which has in turn struck me with GAS! I ask you, in your experiences, which Jazz basses have that honky ballsy sound? You know the one, it ooozes funk and punches like a little scraper...plenty of mid-range poke? Now i'm not meaning expensive here, as in Sei's and Lull's etc, i'm on about good old Fenders and the likes. For instance, does the Geddy have some bite, or the Marcus? How about some of the Jap models? Do your duty boys and girls, and provide us all with some tasty jazz funk honk 'Phwoahhhhhh'ness Agent Jam of much Jazz bass GAS, over and out. J
16. Yeah, i've thought about the software route...seems like it might be a good idea! I'll keep an eye out then, does fuity loops offer this function? Thanks guys, Jam

18. Hi, Just wondered if anyone had got any experience with Sunn cabs and what you're thoughts were about them? Thanks Jamie
19. Hi guys, Kind of still new to the world of valves, but i'm going to be A/B'ing some cabs with my SVT-II (non pro) over the weekend. I was wondering if i could leave the amp on and plug in the different cabs whilst it was on, as long as i make sure it's always got a cab plugged into it? I'd be using a mixture of 4 ohm and 8 ohm cabs. Failing that, if i were to put the cab on standby, could i do this? And if so, would i need to ensure the amp always has a cab plugged into it? Or would i have to put it in standby, let the valves drain off the power, turn the amp off, plug the other cab/cabs in and then start it back up? My apologies if these are some rather basic and stupid questions...i'm learning Thanks Jamie
20.
Why indeed it does, sir, with the bridge soloed a touch it provides plenty of honk with both pups on its smooth as butter, and grooves like a plough. Great slap sound, too. A very fine bass in general!
Argh...GAS attack!!! I do miss this beauty! My F Bass is an awesome instrument, but lacks that harsh jazz bass honk!!! I need to stop looking in the for sale forums!
21. Ahh...my old beauty!!! I forget, did this have jazz honk?
22. Thanks, what about at the bridge please?
23. Thanks guys. If i were to get something i wouldn't want to have to sit around programming it for ages, i guess that some of these just have buttons for this kind of thing? As for chords, it'd only need to be basic changes, although i can just whack these on my looper if needs be.

Drum machines

Hi guys, Just watched a clinic by Victor Wooten. He's using a drum machine that allows you to have 2 bars of drums, then 2 bars of silence, 1 bar of drums, 3 bars of silence, 1 beat, then 3 bars and 3 beats of silence. Does that make sense? If anyone knows of any drum machines that can do that please pipe up. If it can play chords over the top it'd be a bonus, not essentiall though. Thanks Jamie
25. Hi, What's the string spacing, scale length and action like on the bass please? Thanks Jamie
