I must be mad posting my playing on here but thought it might be interesting to someone......This is some lighthearted noodling me and a couple of lads did to the tune of Willy Wonka.

My Dad works in a tiny theater that Norman just played at, gutted I couldn't be there. It sounded like an amazing gig... my Dad was saying that Norman was jumping about like an electrified monkey so he was obviously enjoying it. Wilko joined in too.
I would have freaked at the drummer for stopping.....its different if its a jazz gig but its horrible soloing with no beat behind you. Even if the drummer just kept the bass drum going that would help a huge amount. You can just build up a simple groove then......put some basslines from other songs into your solo, that help if your stuck for ideas. I used to throw in Groove is in the heart....it got me out of some sticky situations.
I'd definitely recommend soloing with a beat behind you though.
I always just build up from a simple phrase.....just try and make the solo have a beginning/middle/end. Once it has this structure it doesn't have to be anything too complicated. Have a listen to Willie Weeks solo at 8mins in http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lSdglxtW8Lg.....perfect example for me.
Deeply in love with my Fender Precision Lyte...Only stopped using it because the electronics have got a bit unpredictable and need a bit of work otherwise it would have been my only bass for 20 something years.
It all depends on the song for me....its important to be able to do both....The Ox was always my inspiration for pick playing.

This is the perfect excuse to post a Yolanda Charles link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T3Lszt2HPK8
Any tips for cleaning the green funk gathering on the frets of my maple neck. From previous posts it seems that silicone free bees wax is the way to go....would that be right? I'm obsessed about not having any sticky texture on the neck when I'm playing so it would have to not leave any residue if possible. Any ideas?
Mine was listening to Coyote from my Dad's Hejira LP. Love that album, glad that Jaco wasn't playing on every track because it would have been overkill and love the contrast with the other guys playing. Coyote made my mind up that I wanted to play bass.
'What's Going on' is so good isn't it, really respectful to Jamerson's parts but still doing his own thing.
Just in case anyone is late coming across this album like I was. Highly recommended for Willie Weeks's effortless groove.

Just started with a band with great musicians and the remit is to do a smattering of songs that people know and then a bunch songs that we can get our rocks off to. Its a funky kind of vibe....I've suggested http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RckfbOm84Qc to start.
Any other suggestions of great bass tracks that I can put to the lads.....
Cheers
Don't really mind the size because it's going to be my only pedal so I've no board to squeeze it into. Could see it being a problem for people if they had a few pedals, and the voltage thing I suppose.
Just took delivery of this big beast. Haven't had much chance to mess with it but with a high enough threshold and fairly slow attack and release it really warms and fattens up the tone nicely......I'm liking it a lot so far and look forward to gigging it now.
