1. D'Addario EXL165 .....too lazy to try anything else and they've always worked for me.
2. As I wise man once told be and I always use it as my mantra......'sh*t goes in....sh*t comes out. You can't polish a turd' I think it's all how you interact with any different instrument, each one reacts differently so you have to learn how to tickle it in the right places. Some people don't seem to have the patience to find the G-spot and move on to a different instrument hoping that it'll solve their problems.
3. Dougie Thomson - Bob Siebenberg (Supertramp) Marcus Miller - Poogie Bell Jack Bruce - Ginger Baker Tommy Shannon - Chris Layton (Stevie Ray Vaughan) All massively influenced me...
4. Thats a constant fear isn't it...Good luck in the future. I agree though....splash out on a Moog and get the left hand working.
5. Just like to raise an imaginary pint to all good drummers.....cheers
6. I remember hearing that it wasRandy Hope-Taylor playing on this track. Not sure if thats true but it would explain its amazingness.
7. So many but one I always remember for it's Spinal Tapness. Rocking out mid gig when my headstock got tangled up in the singers long hair. Had to stop playing mid song to untangle his hair from the tuning pegs
8. I have an Ashdown ABM300 head and 4x10 cab with the soft grill that I bought in 1999. I'm still mad about this amp, I've played a few of the later ABM models and there is a totally different sound to them- I'd never say better because for me it's all just personal taste. For me the old ABM sounds so much warmer and more like a valve amp than the newer ones that I've tried. Not sure how much this has to do with the amount of use that it's had down the years. The only problem I've ever had with it was that the head blows fuses like mad. Ashdown told me it was a defect that they had early on, i have slow release fuses in it now (and a big box of them in my gig bag) and that seems to solve the problem. Just had to share my love for my old Ashdown..god bless her
9.
Oh yes, if I had money I'd have bought p-lytes from eBay for my alt tunings. One day! Got my one for my sixteenth birthday and now at thirty-three it's still going very strong.
I'm the same it was my first bass when I was a teenager and now I'm 37 only a couple of years ago I got my Lakland as a "2nd Bass". Still whenever I plug in the Lyte it's tone blows everyone away. The wirings in bits now so it's too unpredictable to risk gigging at the moment but it'll be back I'm sure.
10.
thanks for your kind words sir! my mate chris (williams from the slash tribute) linked me up to the discussion, haven't stopped grinning since! glad you had a good time, you collectively allowed us to have a good time. my main bass is a fender precision lyte, and i use a squire p for standard c tuning and an aria stb (that cost me £32 from ebay) for drop d but i had time to tune on the day. i was using a big muff bass, an mxr phase 90 and a cry baby bass wah. i use an mxr micro amp to boost for slap and to level out the passive basses with the p-lyte. i see you're in littlehampton? - we're playing in the crown this saturday (30th) if you're around. thanks again!
Great to see someone else with a P Lyte. I've loved mine down the years. Seriously ballsy bass!!
11. Just found a place that sells the 2-12's near me so think I'll got for those if they have them in stock. I think that extra bit of bottom end could be useful and I am a bit partial to cranking the volume.
12. Thanks guys, I feel so much more confident buying these now. Sounds like just what I'm after to compliment my good old trusty ABM300 Ashdown. Light and loud....perfect
13. Great replies guys, all very inspiring uplifting stuff. Decided it's time to overhaul the wedding band and make it something to look forward to at the weekends. A complete overhaul of the set and work ethic is in order I'd say. Make things interesting musically too..maybe some more Stevie Wonder as lemmywinks suggested. Been offered employment too today so that takes care of any week activities as it involves a lot of evening work. Bottom line----time to make the stale old boring wedding band a sh*t hot funky one. Thanks a lot guys
14.
I have one clear, loud and light, I just got in from using it tonight with a full band, had my amp set to about 2 on the volume, cut through really well.
Good to know, thanks. Hows the bass response from them?
15. I'm looking into getting one of these cabs for the smaller type pub gigs that I do. After reading all the love for Barefaced cabs on here I'd to get one but can't afford it at the moment. If anyone has any experience of these cabs that would kind enough to share their thoughts on them I'd appreciate it.
16. Hobby band is a very good idea and I've been working on my own stuff to do that, you really need to keep creative don't you. Love to do more session work too, used to do loads years ago before the wedding band took over my brain. Think I'm just going to start getting out there and not restrict myself to the wedding band. It's true that some of the best gigs are the cool mid-week ones.
17.
What's stopping you being in two bands? Do both! I've got three regular bands, and also have a quite demanding 9-5 career job including study for a degree equivalent.
Very true. Only problem is that the wedding band is pretty mush busy every weekend meaning I'm turning down offers for gigs I'd much rather be doing.
18. I have been playing in a wedding band for a few years now and my soul is a small shriveled wreck of a thing and my chops have regressed to back to my teenage years. I am reaching a point now where I'm having to make up my mind----Wedding Band = old and bitter but with house and wife OR Freelance bass whore= loads of fun, back to great chops again and ------dare I say it.....get a job or lose the house and wife I'd be interested if anyone else has been in this position and the path they chose
19. Even better considering they are half the price of the competition. Highly recommended
20. A while back I got some great advice from the good people of this forum about pickups to replace the stock one's in my Lakland DJ. I put in the Wizard 84's and I'm a very happy camper. So much more balls and beef that I was looking for and much more character to the sound. Have to admit I miss a bit of the top end bite I used to get with a pick but I'd get over that for the growl I now get out of the neck PUP. I am loving my Lakland again!! just thought I'd share my joy
21. You've all been a great help- thanks for your posts. As funds are tight and I'm after some punch I reckon I'll give the wizards a bash. If there's no joy from them I'll have to start saving for the Nordstrands. DiMarzio ultra jazz sound good but maybe a bit "nice" for my tastes, not sure.
22. Was sussing out the Di marzio's when I came across this guy butchering them- so funny though http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ew32aq9LSbc...feature=related
23.
Compared to my stock Fender HW1 i had at the time it was like night and day. Maybe it was more down to having the HW1 and loving the burpy tone i could get from it. I did regret selling mine, especially as i had spent over £350 on it getting it converted in to a PJ but i was never going to be happy. Good luck with the 84's. I had a set in my CV Jazz but i felt they were just a bit too dark so i got Andy to make me a set of 74's, half way between the 84's punch and the 64's classic tone. The 74's work well but again, when i put them in my HW-one they really brought the bass alive so maybe its the bass as they definitely sound different in my CV Jazz.
Thanks- I'll let you know how I get on with them. Was going to try using a preamp but reckon it's better to sort out the sound at source first. Fingers crossed they work. What year was your DJ? mine is 05 so I think its the Aero's in it
24.
I had a DJ5 and in my opinion it was the worst Jazz bass ive every heard. Played and looked fantastic but even compared to my Squier i felt it sounded woolly and lack punch and bite. I put some Nordstrand's in it (as a PJ) but i felt it still lacked something. I sold it. Personally i would go for a set of Wizards but even my set have sounded quite different in two different Jazz basses.
Thats the same that I found with mine, wasn't sure if it was my imagination after seeing all the reviews about the tone of the bass. But it does seem very weak and a bit "hifi" for my liking. It's such a lovely bass in every other way so i'd hate to part with it. Decided on the Wizard 84's so hopefully they will help.
