Anyroadup, I suspect that the psychology behind collecting instruments is a variant of kleptomania and compulsive buying disorder, where there's a compulsion to expand the collection but it remains within the bounds of honesty. But are you a hoarder or a collector? We have one room that's unusable, but that's because we're waiting for a chance to clear it out (and it's not due to the basses, and only partly because of motorcycle gear), so I am apparently a collector: https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/dirty-secret/201012/what-is-the-difference-between-compulsive-hoarding-and-collecting

I bought my car second-hand for £6k. The only times I have made money from using it have been when I was carrying a bass in it. It isn't used to earn my salary (which is more than £6k a year). Your logic is seriously faulty. But I'm not going to embark on a TimR argument, it's like nailing jelly to the ceiling.

It's often due to a bidding war. Two people both fancy the same thing, one puts in a bid, the other beats it, and then the frenzy starts where neither of them will allow the other to win it. The sense of competition outweighs rational thought.

Are barrel jack sockets inherently problematic?
tauzero replied to Random Guitarist's topic in Repairs and Technical
If you've got a skeleton jack, it can always be reinvigorated simply by bending the contacts a little - something that is not part of the design brief for a barrel jack. However, a skeleton jack needs either mounting on a plate with a big hole under it, mounting on a scratchplate, or a very thin bit of wood where it comes out, so basses like Warwicks need surgery to fit one. -
It's a negative temperature coefficient thermistor - there's a data sheet at https://pdf1.alldatasheet.com/datasheet-pdf/view/1132203/VATRONICS/NTC10D-15.html that tells you about the numbering system. The 10D-11 handles 3A, the 10D-15 5A, and in the middle the 10D-13 copes with 4A. I'm not sure what the implications of the lower resistance of the higher power handling versions is. CPC Farnell do thermistors - https://cpc.farnell.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Search?st=thermistor&catalogId=15002&showResults=true&pageSize=25&storeId=10180&langId=[Ljava.lang.String%3B%403c322563&categoryId=700000067503 You'd want an NTC thermistor, 10R, that will handle at least 3A and preferably more, for example https://cpc.farnell.com/epcos/b57237s100m/thermistor-ntc-10r-3-7a/dp/RE04727?st=thermistor or https://cpc.farnell.com/epcos/b57238s100m/thermistor-ntc-10r-5a/dp/RE04735?st=thermistor

Oooh, touchy.

If you're not going to give a link, at least spell the name correctly. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/175438237511 RoXonix. You're welcome.

Which variant are you talking about? I've got two GB10s, which both work fine except that for some reason the USB transfer doesn't seem to work on one of them. I can always just do a physical copy to the card if necessary. Pitch shift and slowdown work fine.

Looks like our favourite 'luthier' may have a rival.......!
tauzero replied to SPHDS's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
I suspect that attempting to get the intonation right on that will be doomed to failure. How much do pole pieces really matter? -
The Daily Excess once ran a Giles cartoon showing the mop-headed youth playing a guitar that was plugged into the electric ceiling light. I wrote to them to tell them how dangerous that was. That was 50 years ago or so. Anyroadup, the seller doesn't seem to bother amending his boilerplate text - he has the same 240V disclaimer on auctions for things like knobs and hinges.

Really? The GT-PRO Steinberger guitar is passive, Godin's active guitars are the occasional ones with piezos and the specialist top-end ones, Line 6 cannot help but be active as they're modelling guitars (and basses). I think auto tuning is confined to the Gibson robot tuning system (which was a complete flop) and the Peavey AT200, which didn't retune the strings but instead applied pitch shifts to the individual strings, and lasted about a year. I'm not sure that there would be much point to a B-bender on a bass. Mark Philips has been producing scalloped fret basses for some years now, which shows the desirability of such a thing. In contrast, Warwick and Ibanez (examples off my wall) have been turning out active basses for years and are still selling established models.

Hmmm. I have a Pi 4, HiFiBerry DAC + ADC Pro, 7" HDMI/USB touchscreen, assorted footswitches, might have some rotary encoders knocking about. Must have a play with Elk OS. And it's good to see you back posting too.

I have computer desks upstairs in my teeny tiny office and downstairs, which is where most bass playing gets done. Office chairs with fabric seats in both places, with all the spammer-identified features, and the downstairs one allows the arms to be swivelled backwards out of the way to play bass. Each of them cost about £30 off Ebay. Plus when my employer shut our office as we were all working from home, I kept my office chair from there too - just got to find somewhere to put it. Just found one that has the same swivelling arms as mine: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/295387127148 You can tell by the disc at the bottom of the arm - the button visible at about one o'clock on the perimeter of the disc is the arm release. It does mean that the arms move slightly when in the up position but that doesn't bother me at all.

One thing that seems a bit odd to me, but might be more obvious from a view of the internals, is the placing of the power jack. The general trend is for it to be at the top of the pedal but these are at the bottom.

I've got three - the Line 6 G50, Smooth hound, and a cheapie bug type which is a 2.4GHz one branded Muslady. The Line 6 is pretty rugged, except that dropping the transmitter onto a hard floor broke the battery cover. The Smooth Hound has been good though I do find the reversed polarity of the power supply a bit annoying. The Muslady has been fine - I bought it for rehearsals as I got fed up of treading on leads and I use minimal equipment in rehearsals, and finished up gigging it a few times. Can't tell any difference between them tonally.

String price increases. Nearly double for some.
tauzero replied to fretmeister's topic in Accessories and Misc
Or pick up a HB bass plus a few sets of HB or Warwick Red strings, taking advantage of the free postage for the bass. Total bargain. -
I think there are some Android apps that will play MIDI files via the USB connector - just trying to work out what will do that and how at the moment. More news when I've experimented further.

Anyone familiar with the works of Terry Pratchett may remember "The Prid of Ankh-Morpork" and the signwriter's scream after stepping back to admire his work. I can imagine the same thing with "INENSITY". That's some admirable artwork, your daughter has an active imagination. I trust you'll continue to produce pedals for her to decorate.
